Ebron camp update - enthusiasm dwindling.

Ebron camp update - enthusiasm dwindling.

Well I've been to a couple training camps and I must say I'm not very impressed with Ebron at all. I watched him drop a 3 yrd pass that hit him directly in his hands. He's dropped more then he's caught and It was obvious he ran the wrong route on another pass.

Let me start by saying I was luke warm on this draft pick. I was happy the Lions added another target for Matt because I felt this team lacks receiver depth. I wasn't to happy it was a TE.

After seeing Ebron up close I must say he doesn't look like or run like a TE. He's much more fluid then Fauria and Pettigrew. He's looks more like a big WR. To me this is encouraging because I feel it means he brings more to the table in route running options. It gives hope that he could develop into a good all around receiving threat.

The problem is he looks very much over his head ad he's dropping some easy passes. He did make one nice snag that Kellen Moore threw to him. It appears like he's struggling with not only the playbook but the speed of the game and the speed of the football.

The Lions are trying to get him in sync and up to speed. Their calling a lot of plays for him and he's getting plenty of reps. Unfortunately he looks like he's way over his head right now.

I truly believe Ebron will NOT be a big factor this year. He will probably be the angst of many fans for his crucial drops. It feels like a drop-a-few season is in the works. Drives stalled and TDs dropped. I also believe he could develop into a stud of a receiver for us but I think he's going to need the some time to develop. So don't get your hopes up that he will be this huge weapon for us this season. If you do you will most likely be disappointed.

On the bright side Fauria looks slimmer, quicker and physically cut. Fauria is catching everything thrown his way and is doing a great job of getting open. Fauria is running more advanced routes then he did last year but I don't think he's capable of running some of the deeper WR out patterns. Fauria seems to be taking his opportunity very seriously and he's putting forth a 100% effort and it how's in his conditioning, footwork and speed.

So my enthusiasm in Ebron is dwindling in terms of this years impact.
"When I die I want the Detroit Lions to be my pallbearer's so they can let me down one last time." "I hope they sing the song Another One Bites the Dust for me."

Unlike some I never really expect too much from rookies. I always look towards year two players like Ansah, Slay, Warford, Fauria etc. too see how much they have developed.

If anyone was expecting big things from Ebron or thought he was going to be a big factor this year they were just fooling themselves. Look for him next year or the year after, like most rookies.

going to have to give him a bit of time to adjust. i'm not worried yet. the fact that he's struggling a bit is actually a good thing imho. he's a nice kid with a big grin but perhaps this adjustment will knock just a bit of that ego off his shoulder and help to actually make him a better football player for the long term. better to struggle now and get it out of the way. his head is probably spinning from the playbook.

Well, he somehow caught 62 passes for 973 yards last season for such a klutz.  I'm going to give him time to learn his job at the NFL level until he doesn't have to think so much.  And Stafford's passes do have a lot more mustard on them than he's used to.  Don't get me wrong, I'd much rather hear otherwise.  But really, this is the first week of his first NFL training camp. noidea

Yep, they're getting what was expected. Drops have always been part of who he is, and even in at his Pro Day he failed to ease those concerns, dropping 3 balls if I remember correctly. By most accounts.. it was not a good day for Ebron then either.

I'll say the same thing about Ebron, that I would about Stafford. You take the good, you take the bad. All we can hope for is that the positives out-weigh the negatives, and that Ebron's big play ability makes up for those drops.

I was not a fan of the pick at all when he was selected by the Lions. I had had a few beers that night (New Belgium Rampant IPA's if I recall correctly ) so I expressed myself on the board more emotionally than I would normally do....when I actually do post…lol.

In the end he's our guy and I want nothing more than to see him succeed and fill the roll that the Lions brass envisioned when they drafted him.

Hopefully he can stay healthy and get all the reps he needs to gain confidence and understanding of his role in our offense. Right now I'm in the "his head is swimming/rookie" camp.

I just had a funny thought though....

If Ebron keeps struggling with the dropsies....how many fans will be clamoring for Pettigrew to get more looks???

I gotta say, Fauria looked awesome last night. Made an awesome diving catch in the endzone.

Hmm...

Fauria looked awesome in the redzone last year (7 TD's!). He's looked awesome in practice. He's got all the size in the world. He's young and coachable...

Glad we buried him on the depth chart for a guy who seems to struggle with catching the ball!

Ok, ok...that was a cheapshot. Me showing my disapproval on that 1st round pick this year. Get it together, Ebron. Please make me shut my trap until it's time to eat some delicious crow.

I believe the kid is going to get better and better and do some damn good work for our squad for years to come. Although I like the player, I never liked the pick. Still don't. And in light of statuses of both Suh and Fairley, we should have drafted DT - Aaron Donald. PERIOD.

Not that many.   I'd rather see an RB out there, or Fauria.   Or another WR.

Austin Seferian-Jenkins, TE outta Washington is who I liked the most in this draft class.

People forget that Jimmy Graham has something like a 15% drop rate.

I think the Pettigrew drops are infuriating is he is getting a lot of 3rd and 5, in traffic, drive killing drops. If Ebron is going to be picking up 20 yards on his catches a few drops here and there will be a bit easier to swallow somehow.

Agreed, Winnipeg.  It's all about the timing.  If he's pulling this stunt in the endzone people will be begging for him to be pulled.  Inconsequential short gains, however, won't be a huge deal.

Exactly. A big play guy dropping a ball hurts less than the guy who is supposed to reliably move the chains.

Actually this is where the refocus on the running game should pay dividends too. We can help our D immensely if we can consistently string together drives.

The reason i liked the tate move is good hands.Stafford throws darts. If youre hands are questionable catching stafford isnt gonna help.Hope ebron settles in and does fine he does bring an extra concern for defenses facing us but  he wont do us much good over all if he cant be fairly dependable  .A big play down the seam is great but if you drop a couple balls on 3rd and 6 how much are you helping.Hope it gets corrected.

Re: Ebron camp update - enthusiasm dwindling.

Besides, good teams dont count on rookies to be a difference maker.

That is a Lion fan syndrome.

If he is a great TE next year or the year after I won't care if he isn't so hot this year.  As long as they don't have Ebron in when he isn't playing well and have him killing our drives.

When he is ready, play him.  But don't kill our offense if he isn't ready.

Re: Ebron camp update - enthusiasm dwindling.

Patience is gonna have to be a virtue with Ebron. Hard to for us to practice that I know lol.. but it is what it is. His upside is big as I said in the other thread. And I can only assume that's the reason they took him, because they had to of known about his much publicized case of the dropsies obviously. Out-weigh the Pro's & Cons and the brass felt it was worth it.
