Lions two 4th round picks.

Lions two 4th round picks.

I think Nevin Lawson was a steal. The only reason he went in the 4th round was because of his height. His hips, feet, aggression, competitiveness, smoothness, quick-twitch, and technique that he plays with is more like a late 1st early 2nd rounder...

Frankly think the Larry Webster pick sucked, guy doesn't exhibit any of his testing numbers from shorts once the pads come on. Looks way more like a 7th rounder at best. Sure would like to know who gave him his initial and final grade...

When you look at it, they grabbed a very talented guy in Lawson(worth a 2nd rounder), and a huge project in Webster(worth a 7th rounder). Avg those two out, and you have the sum of parts equaling one 4th rounder...

Excited to see what Lawson brings in the preseason. He will absolutely get a chance to show what he has. Very good in press, and playing in phase or out of phase.

Re: Lions two 4th round picks.

Webster was my most disliked pick... I wonder where that post is of the order we fans liked the picks. I would like to see it again and see if my views have changed or stayed the same. I liked the Lawson pick too.

Edit: going back they were the bottom 2 picks for me: Lawson 7 and Webster 8... I did comment "I Like it!" in the 'Lawson pick' thread but I was happier with 6 other picks and where they were taken. I still feel the same about both.

I still like the Lawson pick and I think if we could get a player like Willie Young in the 7th round a few years ago then a player like Webster or Webster himself may have been available in the 7th round or UDFA. But, then again, this is not my profession, nor will it ever be.

I doubt either one makes the team, maybe the PS.

To be accurate, this is when YOU look at it. You seem to study the NFL draft, but when all is said and done this is just an opinion. Even the smartest NFL minds agree that in many ways the draft is a crapshoot.

Lawson will have to be abysmal to not make the team.. When was the last time a healthy 4th rounder didn't start the season with the team?

True enough, Ronnel Lewis was cut after one year. The Lions are getting better so it is going to be harder for later round picks to make the club. Lions cut 5th round pick Kenneth Moore after camp in 2008.. He was taken 136th OA, same as Webster.

Re: Lions two 4th round picks.

Our big miss was passing on the RT for Shippensburg because he stoned Webster for the vast amount of the snaps in this game. IMO this guy was our worst pick and I see nothing whatsoever that warranted a 4th round grade. The difference between Kareem Martin in the 3rd that we passed on and this guy in the 4th round is the Grand Canyon. Get stoned initially by RT of Shippensburg, then quit. Rinse, repeat. He actually displayed some bend for his size at times coming from the right side, but his playing strength, explosion and effort are all bad and again this is against downright terrible competition. If this guy turns into a player, I'll shave my beard and eat it.

Let me guess.  You aren't here for the Alcohol or Tobacco...

Save some of that beard for me. I am so confident that he won't be a player that I will take a bite as well...

Re: Lions two 4th round picks.

This is all very premature. No one has seen any of the rookies practice in pads, let alone a preseason game.

Webster is kind of a strange pick though. Usually folks that don't know how to play football don't get drafted that high. Hopefully he will be able to at least contribute something on special teams before the season is over. I won't hold my breath to see any kind of pass rushing ability from him in 2014.

Isn't this the same stuff people were saying about Ansah last year?
Webster was drafted on potential. If he can play up to his potential/measurables, he could be a steal. He could also be a bust. He is the epitome of a boom/bust pick. Those are the kinds of picks you make in the late fourth round.

Yeah but if you watch Webster, when you put the pads on him he moves like his arms and legs are bound by it.

I'll be honest, I'd be much more excited about him as a Tight End than what he's shown at DE.

Lawson is 5'9" and you have to be out of this world with talent to even be considered in the 2nd round at that height.  Could be a good slot CB but taller CB's are en vogue right now....and there's a reason.

webster was a FA talent wise. Bad pick the shippenburg game he was horrible. He seemed uncoordinated played extremely stiff.

Re: Lions two 4th round picks.

Ansah was nit-picked because that is what 1st round prospects get.

At the end of the day, no team had below a 2nd round grade on him.

I would be willing to wager that their was double digit teams with a 7th-UDFA grade on Webster....

Ansah and Webster comparison's and college tape aren't even in the same atmosphere.

And I disagree, Webster shouldn't be the type of pick you make in the 4th round. That is what the 7th round is for...

Correct, he didn't create enough TO's or have an impact as a return man to be considered a 2nd round pick by the league.

I watch him and see a guy that is going to start at nickel for at least 5 plus years in the league. In the 4th round that is a steal.

Re: Lions two 4th round picks.

If you were going to go CB in this draft, 1st round was the time to do it.  You had a handful of guys that were definite upgrades over the 4-5 young guys we already had in the fold.

A 4th round short CB is just another guy fighting to make the roster (and likely PS candidate unless he excels on special teams).

Webster is a guy that looks great in shorts but when you look at his tape he looks lost.  Ansah, with hardly any football experience looked like a future NFL'er on the tape I watched of him.  Webster looked lost.  Now maybe they think they can "coach him up", but that is going to happen on the PS I believe.
