Who is the #3 WR...Maybe Theo Riddick?

Who is the #3 WR...Maybe Theo Riddick?

We know Calvin, Tate and Ebron with Pettigrew and a RB will be the base set.

But who is the #3 WR at this point when we go with 4 WRs (and we replace Pettigrew with a slot guy)?

I think it COULD be Theo Riddick:
"

"He's eager, he's hungry, he's tough, he can run. He's a very, very fine route-runner. He can catch the ball. He's had a real fine spring, so I hope he continues to develop. We think he will."

Riddick was selected in the sixth round of last year's draft, but could turn out to be an even better fit for this system than the one for which he was drafted.

He played a lot of receiver at Notre Dame, finishing his career with 120 catches for 1,263 yards and eight touchdowns."

With the work that RBs receive as blockers (esp. on pass protection) having a RB playing slot could be a nice option as my guess is that Theo would be a better blocker then most WRs.

But Theo has lots of WR experience and when you are looking at what role and what routes a #4 WR would run in this offense (a bit of a mystery to us all at this point)  Theo stands out to me as a guy who will be very tough to keep off the field so he may need to come on as the #4 WR and third WR in some cases.  This could be very nice.

Theo could also free up a roster space at WR.  To me we have two locks then Jeremy Ross as a returner (who seems like a lock to me) and T.J. Ford MAY be a lock due to his polish but even that.

Calvin, Tate, Jeremy Ross and...?  Broyles may be available and then we have guys like T.J. Ford, Corey Fuller (a nice outside depth option), Durham and others.

If we like Theo in a #4 WR/slot role at times this MAY help us to only keep 5 total WRs and would open up a roster spot as I think we keep 5 total RBs on the roster: Bush, Bell, Riddick, LeShoure and a FB.

Last point...how often are we even going to play a #3 WR or #4 WR  if the Lions DO like Theo in a slot role?  In the Red Zone I have to think Fauria will still have a role as well.  How often will guys NOT named Tate and Calvin even get on the field  barring injury?  Have the Lions been able to minimize a team weakness by investing in TEs and versatile RBs who can catch?

I forgot to add this key quote from teh Mlive story:
"And where he's really impressed is in the passing game, where he's caught almost everything thrown his way."

Good route runner catching well...sounds like a sound #3 WR option to me.

Re: Who is the #3 WR...Maybe Theo Riddick?

Broyles if healthy is the obvious # 3.

I'd PUP him just to make sure he's had enough time for his body to heal.

Other than him  we have Ross who should have a roster spot locked up as the KR/PR  & WR

That's 4.

Basically we have 4 other guys battling for 1 maybe 2 spots  ( 3 if we PUP Broyles)

Durham
Fuller
Ogletree
T.J. Jones

Rank these guys in order of how you want them on the roster

1) Corey Fuller           -    deep threat       (Titus Young role)
2)  Kevin Ogletree      -    veteran chain mover (Nate Burleson role)
3) T.J. Jones              -     Slot WR  ( Ryan Broyles role)
4) Kris Durham         -    Redzone   (Joe Fauria role)

Calvin
Tate
Ogletree
Fuller
TJ Jones
Ross

PUP - Broyles
Speed dial phone # next to Andre Fluellen in our phone book = Kris Durham

1)Dennard CB trade w/NYG
2)Martin DE
3)Buchanon  S
4)Swanson OL
4b)Bryant WR
4c)Van Noy  LB
6)Freese K
7)Stephen DT
*) pick via trade Webster  DE/TE

Sounds like one of those propaganda articles written because they need something to write about.

I see nothing in Riddick that makes him a legit #3 WR.

He must have decent special team's cut ups, because that is the only reason I can see him sticking around.

I don't know, Riddick has been getting a lot of play from the national media too. Daniel Jeremiah of NFL Network had him for one of his breakout players this year.

I still think its Broyles job to lose. And it'll be all about health there. I see Riddick playing more of a role as a swing back who is versatile enough to line up wide in motion or take a hand-off.

Re: Who is the #3 WR...Maybe Theo Riddick?

mongoose, it is cool to be skeptical of articles like the posted Mlive article. But I think Riddick is really a guy with an interesting skill set.

Riddick didn't JUST catch passes as a RB in 2010 and 2011. He WAS a WR. The slot receiver for a big time football program. But in 2012 Riddick was asked to JUST be a RB but he also then caught passes as well. Riddick was also a pretty good kick returner as well at Notre Dame.

This kid has experience at multiple positions and the new staff have taken note. Again, Riddick played the slot WR role in college AND then RB as well. As a senior Theo ran 190 time for 917 yards with an average per carry of 4.8. That is pretty darn good. And through 2012 Thee had carried the ball just 54 total times in three years (2009, 2010 and 2011 combined). Then he became a full-time RB with 190 carries in 2012.

Further, Theo caught a lot of passes for a slot WR with not good QB play. Theo caught 114 passes in the last three seasons combined with catch totals of 40 in 2010, 38 in 2011 and 36 in 2012. That is pretty good.

Theo is well-rounded and able to help this club in a lot of ways. I do think there is smoke to this particular fire and I think Theo is gonna be on the field a lot for the 2014 Lions.

Riddick is one of the guys I'm most rooting for.  I think he's tough.  He's a friggin' football player, not just another guy with a skill set.  I hope he can be a nice contributor.  His style is exactly what we need.  A leader in the toughness department, like Bell.  It's an intangible factor that rubs off on the whole team.

Re: Who is the #3 WR...Maybe Theo Riddick?

I should clarify that I am not talking about who the #3 WR is going to be but rather who is going to be the #4 receiving option?

When we need to sit Pettigrew who comes into the game to play eeh role of the 4th pass catcher?

I think this is a really interesting question.

At WR we all know it is Calvin, Tate...and I agree with Sporty that T.J. Jones (I think) is looked at as a viable 2014 WR option.

But will it be a Rb or WR who plays that slot #4 weapon role? That is my real question. If we stay with Calvin, Tate, Ebron, and say Reggie Bush...it would be pretty awesome if we could motion Riddick into the backfield and split out Reggie or allow Riddick to run a slot route I think.

You think he's flat out better than Broyles?

Or you not banking on Broyles ever    staying healthy/ regaining form/ recovering from past injuries??

I agree, I think it's Ogletree's job for now  with TJ Jones ready to take the spot from him sometime in the next year, two years, or three years.

Durham speed dial.

Fuller deep threat.

Ross KR/PR situational gadget guy

1)Dennard CB trade w/NYG
2)Martin DE
3)Buchanon  S
4)Swanson OL
4b)Bryant WR
4c)Van Noy  LB
6)Freese K
7)Stephen DT

I hope we don't waste a roster spot on Broyles this year.  Enough is enough, time to move on.  Broyles is not good enough to "keep up the faith."

We can't call Durham, that's called tampering.  In other words, Durham has proven he's an NFL level WR and he will be on an NFL roster.

Wes,

For conversation sake, let's assume we PUP Broyles    (not wasting a roster spot)

Let's assume we keep Durham since you feel he's an NFL WR.

What do you do then?

Keep 7 WR?   Cut Ogletree??  Who do you send to PS  Fuller / TJ Jones ???

Ogletree will not make this team.

We will keep 4 WRs plus Ross. Megatron and Tate are locks. The final 2 are up in the air.

Re: Who is the #3 WR...Maybe Theo Riddick?

I think the primary WR3 is Ebron. You can list him as a TE if you want to, but he'll be in the slot more than anyone else. I really like Riddick though, he's gonna be a solid backup to Bush and Bell. Boy howdy, if these guys can catch and hold onto the ball and Stafford has a better year then these guys are going to be really tough to stop. The Lions are going to have to let some talented people go when the final cut comes around.

Yep, and I think Ogletree makes it too.
CJ, Tate, Broyles, Ogletree, Ross and Durham. TJ to PS
