Anybody Else Catch This?

Anybody Else Catch This?

So, here's something interesting.

I guess this ad (below) is going to run tonight during the NBA Finals in some cities.......

Thoughts on it?  I guess as a Lions fan, I am totally about tradition here so the name "Redskin" never really bothered me before....I see it like Bears, Packers or Giants...just a name that is part of our culture as NFL fans.

But, I'll be damned if this isn't persuasive in it's own way.

The question I really have is....where does this come from and how strongly does the Native American community feel about this?

I'd love to get reactions of you guys on it.

My girlfriend is a full-blooded Indian and it doesn't bother her at all. But then I guess it obviously bothers some.

The Redskins should just change their name.  I mean, really, what if they were named the Washington Blackskins?
And what do Indians have to do with Washington D.C. anyways?

i think this is the gist of the argument.  if you step back and try to get into the mind of any community based on race, to make it more apparent why it might be offensive, what if we had the following teams:

- DC blacks, n__gers, coons, slaves, cotton pickers, etc or even african americans
- NY honkeys, whiteys, whiteboys, slave owners, etc
- LA spics, wetbacks, guidos, beaners, illegal aliens etc

you begin to see why this might be sensitive for the indian community when from an outsider looking in, we might think a redskin isn't a derogatory name but maybe even a term representing a fierce warrior on horseback or whatever...

it's not really for anybody that isn't an indian to decide..

my guess is the could call themselves the washington warriors, keep the same cool logo and color scheme and call it a day and people could move on.  chiefs is already taken.

just my two cents

Re: Anybody Else Catch This?

As a society we have become way to HYPER-SENSITIVE!

People can't cough now without offending someone.

I understand the point that the Native American's are trying to convey....but is truly that offensive?  I know some are offended and are screaming loudly about this issue and am willing to bet that they are causing people who did not originally have issue with this to now have issue with it.  Funny how people can so easily crumble to the mob mentality and let others do their thinking for them!

Yes...its a 40oz original!

I think PETA should petition to have the Lions name taken away from Detroit because of the absolute harm being done to quite a majestic animal heritage.

On topic:  In this day and age, if 1 person is offended, things change.  The needs of the one outweigh the needs of the many.

could change the name to the Washington Natives....Arrowheads,  Injun's or something-assuming they want to keep the Native American theme.

I think it's nutz anyway, they've had the Redskins name since I  was 4-5 years old ...36 or 37 years ago, and it took THIS LONG to  find it offensive???

ok.

Either way, I think they WILL make them change the name or face a huge fine to keep it. confused

I am offended by the name Miami "Heat." My ancestors were forced to work the cotton fields in the heat, so I don't like it. In fact, I vote to ban cotton socks as well. I also vote to ban banning, because my people were once banned. I also find the Cleveland "Browns" offensive. I also think that gays should be offended by the Chicago "Bears" the Green Bay "Packers" the Pittsburgh "Pirates" or the snack cake "twinkies." The Brewers should change their name, to avoid offending recovering alcoholics. The Virginia Tech Hokies should change their name, as soon as someone figures out what the heck a Hokie is.

I could care less either way. I just think it's funny when any other slur tries to compare itself to being called a "N**ger." Not even close.

Re: Anybody Else Catch This?

I have quite a bit family from my wife's side that are North American Indian.

A couple do the full dress pow wows and dances. An aunt is doing a photo shoot this week. She's also friends with Saginaw Grant who was in The lone Ranger movie.. He is an elder and educator for their nation.

I can assure you they take their culture very seriously. They are preserving their history and culture and  that traces back to North America. They are a nation of their own, by treaty with the United States.

My heritage traces back to Ireland. Nobody ever called me a "Mick". I never knew what was so offensive about that either when I was young. But it certainly was an insult to the poor Irish immigrants here in America.

I think it's not "just a few" that feel like the nation's capitol having a professional sports team with a name that that they consider derogatory to their people, to their nation, is unacceptable.

I used to feel like a lot of you do, that it's just a name and has been for a long time so what's the big deal.

Now that I'm getting older I think they should change the name.

All the names of lakes, rivers, bays, or anything else that was considered derogative here in MN were ordered changed several years ago.

Our local bay used to be Squaw Bay.

People didn't like it then, but they still fish the lakes.

I agree! We should become the Detroit Sheep. The name would fit the team better don't you think?

i *totally* agree that things have gotten out of hand.   everybody's got a gripe with everything these days or can find one if they want to.   your examples and other's here are quite indicative of how silly things have become.

i'm not sure i agree with your last statement though.  it's elitest.  it presumes that only one word is the worst and therefore all slurs are somehow lesser and couldn't possibly have inflicted near a degree of subjective pain or suffering on someone or body somewhere on this planet at some time.   i don't presume to know what it must be like to be called an N, but i doesn't make me any less aware of the notion that someone else called something else might experience some level of equal anger or hurt.   prejudice and hate is prejudice and hate and it comes in many shapes, sizes and colors with a whole set of words to express the subjective sentiment.   which is to say none is really more deserved or worse than another.    history current and past is abound with examples across the entire spectrum of humanity.   don't want to start something just saying.

Cub, the Skins have held that name for much longer. Back when they were in Boston. Sure enough, the original team owner was a native himself... which provably comes as the defense of the team.

Either way I hope they just change it... it's getting annoying. They've tried to change it for many many many many many many years though... so I think it'll be many many years before change comes.

Nice post.
Obviously it offends me in no way, but I'm not of native origin.
As a kid I thought it was a cool name for a team -- warrior connotation.
I cannot be invested in this argument either way -- ultimately I don't care how or if it gets resolved.
But you make a solid argument.

I remember seeing Indians in Canada's north drinking booze from paper bags at noon.
I saw it too often to not view it as an ingrained problem.

Would changing the Redskin name contribute to elevating Indians as a whole?
I wouldn't know the answer to that but I suppose if it does harm it shouldn't be a big deal to change it.

Not sure how any of us can have a legitimate opinion without being Indian.

Then again, if most Indians don't find it offensive, then the ones that do should consider whether they're focusing on an issue that, in the grand scheme of things, is really not that important.  There are larger issues to be addressed.

Re: Anybody Else Catch This?

as a corporate entity, i think a good name right now would be the Washington D.C. Founders..
...and go with a Red, White and Blue logo motif.

There's a recent trend in people pretending to care about the foundation of this country...
...then voting for Tea Party candidates.

it would make millions!..

I'm sorry but this is getting putt of hand. I mean should I be offended as an Irish American that ND & the Celtics have goofy leprechauns as there mascot? Where does it end? Go ahead and change the Celtics to the Mics. It's a word people, it only hurts because someone told you when you were growing up that it's derogatory. Oh and by the way there is no more offensive mascot than the Cleveland Indians.

Re: Anybody Else Catch This?

So 300 hundred years ago our European ancestors came over to America, and eventually took the Native Americans land, slaughtered thousands and put them on reservations.  The name used by the Washington football team was one invented by the "white man" not the Indians.  Perhaps the reason no Indian groups had protested the name before now is because they felt so beat down that they didn't have the guts to object.

Now that they do, we accuse them of being sensitive.  That's like accusing African Americans of being senstive to slavery or the Jewish population being sensitive to the swastika.

It's not like we are going to give them back their land, so perhaps we can give them back some of their dignity.   The point is that there are many non-Native Americans that take offense to the name.

Never argue with an idiot...they'll bring you down to their level and then beat you with experience.
