Re: Best PA Announcer?
This is hilarious! All last week I contemplated what the Butler fans would discuss after the game. The awesome defense? The inconsistent offense? Their quest for the 3-peat? I was wrong...they are busting on the poor PA announcer that probably doesn't get a penny for what he does. For what its worth, my 70 yr old parents listened to the game on radio via computer stream. They had the same thing to say about your announcers. Please....

Re: Best PA Announcer?
Yesterday was thus far the biggest game of the year for the KJCCC. It pitted two evenly matched teams that were highly ranked. They were competing for a shot at the national title. Both teams played HARD. Both teams played good. Those boys on both sides played their hearts out! I apologize, but no matter what perspective you are coming from, discussing the quality of a PA Announcer after a game like that seems somewhat miniscule in the grand scheme of things and hints at "sour grapes". Its like discussing how efficient the concession stand was at halftime (who really cares?). I wouldn't even honor this topic with an opinion its so irrellevant..

he was screaming into the microphone like a 12 yr old girl... you could tell he has never announced a big time game before or he has never been in a situation like that before..

Re: Best PA Announcer?
Sour Grapes must taste especially bitter. Hey how about that concession stand? That thing was sooooo slow!!!!! They should get a new one! Those aluminum seats? Boy they were hard on my butt! The bathrooms? Terrible! They actually had paper towels! Not the high speed blow dryers. Fort Scott's streets were made of BRICK!!!! I bet my car went out of ailgnment just getting to the stadium. And that football game? What football game? There was a football game?

Sour grapes? Is bigshot a Butler fan? Good grief, it's a fair topic to discuss. if you don't care about it, why do you post here?
I've only been to games in Hutchinson. that guy does a good job.

Give the Radio Guy a break, I'd like to see any of you complaining about it do a better job. I know I couldn't, play by play over the radio is prolly one of the harder media positions. If you can do better maybe you should go audition.

Re: Best PA Announcer?
As far as the PA guy goes, if I wanted to hear an adult male have numerous loud orgasms into the mic, I would have put on some headphones, plugged into XM radio and tuned into the Howard Stern show. Many times, I thought the Garden City guy was the most unprofessional biased jerk there was. Saturday, I was proven wrong. This guy was gushing his pants with 1:05 to go and letting everyone know it. There's nothing wrong with thanking the coaches, players, cheerleaders, fans, etc., but when you have to scream at the top of your lungs and make it sound like one of those extended World Cup "GOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLL!" calls while doing it, then there's not only a problem, but there's an annoyance as well. Butler, Coffeyville, Dodge City, Highland and Independence have minimal problems. Sure, there might be some names wrongly pronounced, but the P.A. is not having a full-fledged orgasm on the mic. Even the Garden City guy doesn't get that animated. He just likes to hear himself talk. As far as the Fort Scott radio guy goes, I've never heard his broadcasts, but from what I hear, he's very underprepared -- not even knowing the pronounciations of his own team. If I learned anything from my radio days, it was to always be prepared (names, stats, etc.). If you know the rules and remember to give the facts often (the score and the time remaining often, along with the down, distance and yard line before every play), football shouldn't be that hard to call on the air - because it's stop and start and you have time to recover. If a play-by-play guy doesn't know what an I-formation or a two-tight end set looks like or know what an "illegal shift" signal from the referee looks like, then he should probably be looking for another line of work. Basketball is where you can lose it pretty quick, because the action is non-stop. Like I said, I've never heard the guy, so I can't comment on what he does wrong or not -- all I've been told by a source is that he's very underprepared.

Re: Best PA Announcer?
I don't believe it was an embarrasement, I think he was doing his job as a Home town PA announcer. I'm use to going to Pittsburg State University Games they are DII school in Pittsburg, KS. 30min south of Fort Scott and I am use to enthusiams from the Announcer. I'm hoping some of his enthusiam will spill over into are dull crowd 3/4 the crowd just likes to sit and clap .

Re: Best PA Announcer?
My take on it is that a PA person is kind of like an an official.....If during a game, you do not notice them...then they did a good job. But from the sounds of it, maybe some PA people should read the following: http://www.naspaa.net/conduct.php

Re: Best PA Announcer?
So...the next time I go to Arrowhead, and hear the announcer for the Chiefs yell out, "That's good enough for a Kansas City.......Fiiiiirst Doooooown"! Should I take him that code of conduct? He CLEARLY violated rule #2. My point is...everyone does it (except the Air Force Prep guy and he was about as interesting as soggy bread). In Garden City, the Bucs were trailing FS by a large margin. GCCC scored...scored again, and then got within maybe seven points before FS got their stuff together and put the game away. I recall their announcer allowing some bit of excitement creep into his voice. It didn't bother me that he was doing it...I was more concerned with what was going on with the football game. The term "Home Field Advantage" is something we bring up but rarely define. I think it covers several things such as travelling time for the visitors, the different texture of the field, the home team's fans outnumbering the visitors', etc. I have played , and attended, many "away games" where the PA guy was clearly biased. I look on it like hitting or bad calls by the officials...its all part of the game. Deal with it. In the end, we are talking about someone that has probably called those games for quite awhile. He's probably a local, and hasn't seen a game like that, with its circumstances and outcome in a long time. He's human...and I doubt VERY seriously he had anything to do with Butler getting beat by Fort Scott. Now....how about that Coffeyville/Butler game? Mighty damn quiet.

Mighty quiet. 1st off let's be honest....the Chiefs get 1st downs as often as Highland and Dodge City do.,... 2nd....the chiefs have already gained an advantage by getting the first down....so the announcer did not incite the crowd in order to gain a first down. This would go along the lines of yelling "Defense, Defense" over the mic. Now video boards and those operators doing that stuff is a whole different thing. 3rd....i think that the PA for the Chiefs knows the code of conduct rather well.....http://www.naspaa.net/clinics.php. check to see who is one of the Clinicians....

Re: Best PA Announcer?
Hugz....good point(s). 1. The Chiefs get them on occassion...he still does it. 2. Could he possibly be inciting them to get another one? He's surely inciting the crowd for something. Don't ya think? 3. That said...is HE violating rule two? And now...my add on for you? 1. What did the FS announcer say specifically that incited the crowd? Was it him thanking the cheerleaders or recognizing the offensive line? The only description I have seen was from Grizzly...and it wasn't very specific. 2. Do you think the PA guy had a direct impact on "the most well coached team in the NJCAA" getting beat? 3. After several previous home games, why is this just now coming up? 4. If the answer to #2 is "nothing", do you think this whole discussion smacks of sour grapes? Please don't allow the fact that no Butler fan has discussed this game on here sway your answer. And really...Coffeyville/Butler...what do you think?

Re: Best PA Announcer?
The fact that he's loud and screaming not only on the mic, but that carries over in the press box as well. There were three radio stations there having a job to do, and with this bonehead blowing his wad, I'm sure it was very difficult for them to do their jobs. Not only that, but you have coaches up in the press box trying to relay strategy to their respective sidelines. The surrounding houses right near the stadium must house Greyhound supporters, because apparently no one called the city to complain about loud noise in the neighborhood. The fact of the matter is the only two places I've seen this in the Jayhawk is Garden and Fort Scott. Given the fact that everyone sits on one large open row at Fort Scott, the acoustics make it difficult for everyone else. We didn't play at Garden this year -- but it doesn't surprise me that someone would complain about the guy, because he ranks right up there with annoyance. We're not saying Butler lost the game because of the PA guy. That's just ridiculous. We're saying that there's a proper way to do the job without screaming into the mic and sounding like you're having an orgasm. He spent a good minute yelling while he was "thanking" the players, coaches, fans, cheerleaders, etc. "LETS THAAAAAAAAAANK THEEEEEEEEEEEEE FOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRTTTT SCOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTTTTT COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOACHEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSS!" and repeat that phrase while yelling it out for players, fans, cheerleaders. On various occasions during the game, he was screaming when Hopkins would carry the ball or during other incidents. One play in the second half, he screamed when Hopkins got about a 2 or 3-yard gain, yet, he was still one yard short of the first down -- must have been in anticipation of getting the first down. By my opinion and looking at the list Hugz posted, there were six codes of conduct the FS announcer went against -- especially violating #2 and #6 every chance he got. It's obvious the guy knows nothing about sportsmanship -- nor about the jobs other people in the press box have to do either.
