Pro football comes to Bakersfield

This is from the Bakersfield Californian as I'm unable to post a url for it

BY ZACH EWING Californian sports editor zewing@bakersfield.com

Professional football is coming back to Bakersfield.

The Professional Football Showcase, a new league that will play its first season in the spring, has given a franchise to Bakersfield that likely will play its games at Bakersfield College's Memorial Stadium.

The league, run by former Canadien Football League coach Lance Heron, stays true to its name: It's professional (players are paid $600 per game, and officials and coaches make money, too), it's football, and it's a showcase.

"Our goal is to supply the NFL with players," Heron said. "There have been pro leagues in the past that had the ultimate goal of being bought out by the NFL. We don't want that. We want their coaches and general managers to take players, but our goal is to be here 80 years from now."

The league will have eight teams based in California -- Fresno, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Long Beach, Orange County, Riverside County and San Diego are the others -- plus teams in Las Vegas and Phoenix.

Each team will have a 36-man roster and play a season that begins in March and runs until early summer. All teams will have coaches that have coached in professional football, either the NFL, CFL or Arena Football League.

Players will be brought in from around the United States, but Heron said the goal is for each team to have at least half local players. To that end, the PFS has tryouts planned, starting at 1 p.m. Sunday in Oceanside. Another will be Tuesday in Santa Barbara (tryouts are $25 per player; for more information, visit www.professionalfootballshowcase.com).

"This is going to be a players' league," Heron said. "I don't ever want to take advantage of the players. They can come and try out for $25, and we're going to give them back more than that in some the stuff we're giving them in a goodie bag."

PFS is a registered non-profit, and the league's motto is "A league based on character, honesty and integrity."

Heron said his mission is to provide entertainment for the public and a place for players and coaches to showcase their skills while improving their life outside of football.

"We want to bring football to the community and be involved in the community," he said. "We're going to do events like bringing in the underprivileged and feed them. We want to help our players continue their education. We don't want to make money. We want to take young men and help mentor them."

When I first read the headline (I didn’t read the article) my initial reaction was - how might this affect BC football (assuming they would be competing for fans during the regular football season).  So, I think a springtime format is great – especially if you need a “live football" fix in the off season.  I hope Bakersfield supports it.

From the article:  “Players will be brought in from around the United States, but Heron said the goal is for each team to have at least half local players.”  ……Gee, this is better than most “community” colleges do. wink

Not sure he'll spend 40 days in the desert, but the "Chosen One of Bakersfield" coronated the "King" may be on a spiritual sabbatical, and when he does descend upond us, look for him to ride in on a glorious blazing saddle . . .

He's researching whether or not concrete helmets are viable. He built a whole new office just for that. Could be a money maker.
