Re: Who will win the state title this year predictions

Year                        School

2003                       CCSF

2004                       COC

2005                       Grossmont

2006                       Elco

2007                       CCSF

2008                       Butte

2009                       Mt SAC

2010                       Mt SAC

2011                       CCSF

2012                       BC           * You Betcha! cool

In the last 10 years 7 different teams have had the honor to call themselves California
State JC Football Champs.  CCSF (3) and MS (2) are the only teams to have more than 1 state championship in those 10 years.

SoCal has 6 of the 10 championships and NorCal has 4.  Five different teams from the south have claimed the state title, while only 2 different teams from the north have.

CCSF would have to be the odds on favorite. In addition to their 3 wins, I’m not sure how many appearances they have made in the championship game in those 10 years but a lot.  The second favorite would have to be MS, again based on appearances and wins.  I’d favor the south over the north and of course I’ll be rooting for the 2012 CA State Championship BC Renegades.  biggrin

GO GADES!

Having MS in their conference (MS is undefeated in conference play over the last several years), RCC truly has the longest road in the south to the state championship.  First RCC must get through the first 9 games, before the MS game, with little or no problems.  Then, no matter how you cut it, RCC will probably have to play MS twice in close proximity at the end of the year to get to state.  That is no easy task.

Maybe, if RCC lives up to their billing, the Tigers will be MS’s "two games in close proximity" problem this year.  We’ll see – good luck….. except when it comes
to BC of course. wink

Watch out for Ventura this year, 10-0 in regular season and beat BC in OT in regular season. Good coaching, new QB who was a rockstar in NJCAA last year, play RCC in opener!

Re: Who will win the state title this year predictions

It is tough to win State. Why do you think we made so much noise about that 2011 RCC team not being able to participate in the playoffs? Now that we have the luxury of looking backwards through time, that may have been one of the best junior college teams in recent history. All they did was break the 26-game, 2-year winning streak of the reigning State AND National champion MSAC Mounties, who by the way, went on that year to play in their 5th straight State title game for a chance at a three peat. Then they went on to fully embarrass a Saddleback squad that only a few weeks earlier fumbled away a sure victory over MSAC.

When all was said and done, that team of kids had a 19-game win streak and a 21-1 record. The only thing that could stop them were the rules that precluded their ascension to the playoffs.

Was there another team in the country that could've stopped that juggernaut in 2011? I don't think so. How about in 2012? We'll never know. They had a rare combination of talent, size, speed and experience. They'd won 10 out of 11 in the previous season and, so, were no strangers to success. It was a team that had a mission of being the best in the land who played with purpose and a chip on their shoulder. The true test was being down early to MSAC 12-0 and having to come from behind twice - once in the 4th quarter - to win.

I bet Craft would've taken his 2011 squad over the one he had last year in his first attempt at a State title. I don't know what he'll have this year, but if they're as good as that team, he'll have as good a shot as anybody.

Trust me, RCC, BC, SB, CCC, COC and AHC (all lost to VC last year) will all make sure they are ready for VC this next year.  No longer is VC an opponent’s “pretty sure win.”  Say what you want about RCC and their QB problems in last year’s game #1 loss to VC, but I think part of the reason for the loss was the Tigers being in the “pretty sure win” mode.  I think quite a few thought RCC wouldn’t have a legit challenge until game 10.  They were almost right.  It’s easier to slip up in D1.

Ventura beat BC last year because of sloppy officiating. What happened to VC when all the marbles were up for grabs? Still picking up their jock straps and cleats off the field.

CCSF has been in 8 of the last 10 State Championship Games.  Missing in 2008 and 2009.  Since its inception in the late 1990's, the only other State Game without CCSF was 2002.

I'd like to see if they could do that if they had to play the same number of playoff games that the SoCal champion has to play.  It's doubtful at best.

As I said before; RCC had issues at OL in 2012. I told JJ that they were too small when I watched them at practice. They were good enough to get over the 500 teams. They   had some challenges against Citrus and MS took advantage of their size advantage.

Size at the OL won't be a problem this year. Unknown who the QB will be, but they have D1 bounceback receivers. I'm sure the OL will buy the QB all the time needed. banghead

Re: Who will win the state title this year predictions

Max Holmes (6-1, 200) grey shirted in 2011, then played back up to the back up last season after Shreve bounced back, got the starting job, then lost the starting job to Zach Adkins.

Is there a pattern emerging? Dalton grey shirted for Craft at MSAC, then started for two seasons at RCC. Zach grey shirted for Craft at RCC, played back up for one season and then, scheduled to be a back up again, beat out Shreve and started most of one season at RCC. Max has grey shirted for a season, been a third stringer for a season and now what? Will he get a shot to start or will there be a bounce back to come in and take the starting role? My feeling is that as a sophomore with very little to no snaps, Max will be a back up again. I'm a little surprised not to have seen a high profile bounce back appear yet and still expect to. Could it be that potential transfers are eyeing the fact that no RCC quarterback has received an FBS offer in spite of posting a combined record of 29-3?

No one goes into junior college to grey shirt, especially if they are academic qualifiers and they've been starting QBs in high school. They go in being told they'll get a shot and expecting one. This is a very important part of the strategy when building depth in a complex QB-centric offense like RCC employs. You have to recruit them in making them believe that they're going to play and, once they're in the system, you've got to convince them that they aren't ready and that they need to develop, with next year being their year. This works with some. Others leave and go somewhere else, where they can play right away (Blake Loncar left and went to Citrus, for instance). Truth is, Zach Adkins may have been able to start somewhere else as a true freshman. He ended up grey shirting a year, playing back up a year and then, after all that time, work and sacrifice, was supposed to spend another year as a back up. Personally, I'd have been gone the day I found out Dalton was sticking around for a second year, much less after Shreve showed up. Think about this: Where would RCC have been this season without Adkins? Not 8-2, I don't think. Interestingly enough, both Loncar and Adkins, both of whom were judged not good enough to start at RCC, ended up with FCS scholarships, Loncar to Indiana State and Adkins to Northwestern University in Louisiana.

I think that one thing is for certain. Craft is not going to start a true freshman. His record, over time, shows that he will either play a previous grey shirt or bring in a bounce back. I'm no Craft historian, but when I look back over the years just since he returned to the junior college ranks from SDSU, he had Lorenzen at Palomar (bounce back), Craft at MSAC (bounce back), Lamaison at MSAC (grey shirt), Faulkner at MSAC (bounce back), Livingston at RCC (grey shirt), Shreve at RCC (bounce back) and Adkins at RCC (grey shirt). All of the bounce backs except Shreve ended up with an FBS offer. Of the grey shirts, only Lamaison.

I don't know what will happen in 2013, but as always, it'll be interesting to watch.

Re: Who will win the state title this year predictions

I was surprised at how many one-hit-wonders there have been over the last 10 years.  Including Sanger (2002), COC, Grossmont and Elco have not really been major contenders since their big win days (Elco did make the playoffs 2011).  I’d hate to see COC get back to their former glory (they were pretty much unbeatable back in the era when they won state).  But being JC football and COC having a newhead coach, you never know.

I was shocked when CCSF beat MS for the state title in 2007 – I didn’t think that was even a possibility.  BC had truly one of the best teams in many years and MS beat the Gades in an absolute high scoring slobber knocker.   Even though it was a loss, it is still one of my top 5 great Renegade games of all times.

Siouxnation I hate to be the one to rain on ur parade but BC played Ventura 2x last year and lost a 4 OT game on the road to them................. BUT BUT when all the marbles were on the table BC demolished Ventura on the road in the State Playoffs 48-8 !!!! Thats the game that counted and ended Venturas`season at 10-1 propelling BC on to be crowned State Champions..............
