Steroid use in HS and College Sports?

With Lance Armstrong giving his big interview to Opera today on his “blood doping,” I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on performance enhancing drug use in football (HS, JC and college).  Have we reached the point (like with marijuana) where steroid use is becoming more and more acceptable?

When my kids were in HS, I was working for a lady that was a big mucky muck in the Kern HS District, and I brought up some of my sincere concerns about steroid use in HS. I was surprised at how little concern she had about the subject.  I suppose any kind of testing program would be complicated and probably cost a fortune.  I’m sure, like with Homeland Security frisking down the 90 year old lady, in HS they would have to test ALL of the kids in ALL of the sports so as not to profile.  It was my experience, that with the kids, everyone knew who was taking the “roids.”  But…..

Sidenote:  What is blood doping?

acdad . . . I can't image testing at that level due to cost . . . Your are right, the kids would know . . . Testing in college, absolutely . . . I remember in the 90's seeing the Giambi brothers playing college baseball, one at Long Beach St, one at Cal St Fullerton, a few years later as I followed them into the pros I remember a local magazine in the San Gabriel Valley doing an article on them . . . Seeing their photo I thought, oh my God, I knew their body types had been changed unnaturally . . . They were on roids . . . Blood doping, I believe, through a transfusion, extra oxygen is introduced back into the body enhancing performance, I may be wrong, so hopefully fellow bloggers can chime in . . .

You're right on the definition of blood doping. Only benficial to aerobic activity. One of the most infamous foul ups with this was a Greek Power Lifter trying to gain an advantage by blood doping ( no advantage really) The problem was that he was juicing at the same time. He pulled the blood out that had the steroid in it. Went clean for a few weeks to let his body replenish the lost blood and get the steroids out of his system that he was using. He reintroduced the blood back into his body, and got busted for the steroid......genius.
