The Pink Locker room MUST GO.....Really??

check out this article; thoughts?  tongue

Iowa's pink locker room protested

Updated: August 28, 2014, 5:54 PM ET
Associated Press

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- A University of Iowa professor who donned a robot costume to heckle Bill Clinton and Michele Bachmann has now set his sights on one of his school's famous quirks: the visiting team's pink locker room at Kinnick Stadium.

Kembrew McLeod is organizing what he jokingly calls a "Million Robot March" to coincide with an annual celebration Friday honoring legendary Iowa football coach Hayden Fry, who had the opposing team's locker room painted pink in 1979. McLeod wants the school to ditch the pink, which he says amounts to a school-sanctioned taunt that exudes homophobia and sexism.

Fry has said pink is a calming color meant to make Hawkeyes' opponents passive. But he also noted in his biography that it was the color of little girls' bedrooms and some considered it for sissies. The tactic has rattled some opposing coaches, with the late University of Michigan coach Bo Schembechler having student managers put white paper over the walls.

The paint became part of Hawkeye lore. A 2005 renovation added pink across brick walls and shower floors and installed pink metal lockers, carpeting, sinks, showers and urinals.

Many opposing players have shrugged off the color, with Michigan quarterback Devin Gardnerrecently calling it the best locker room in the conference because of its spaciousness.

Some feminists, lawyers, gay rights activists and editorial boards have criticized the gimmick over the past decade. But previous protests, including a longstanding threat of a discrimination lawsuit, haven't changed anything.

Fans have generally opposed the various efforts to get the color changed, saying it's a tradition that isn't meant to be a gender-based putdown.

McLeod, a communications studies professor, hopes his absurd approach will draw attention to the issue. He said people dressed as robots will meet on top of a hotel parking garage, and then march through FryFest, an annual event that draws up to 20,000 Hawkeye fans. They plan to hold signs and chant slogans such as, "Binary code yes! Gender binaries no!" and "Delete the pink locker rooms!"

McLeod, 43, was dubbed "Roboprofessor" after he heckled Clinton during a 2008 speech in costume. He followed that up in 2011 when Bachmann, then a Republican presidential candidate, visited an Iowa City diner. Video of McLeod dressed as a "gay robot" accusing Bachmann of being a "robophobe" and a "homophobe" -- before getting booed and escorted out -- quickly went viral.

McLeod said he hopes to create a similar scene Friday.

"Ten to 30 robots marching along with human allies is a visual spectacle that I think will travel far and wide," he said. "It's a serious issue, but we want to demonstrate that we are not humorless, politically correct downers."

Organizers of FryFest, which the 85-year-old former coach is expected to attend, aren't exactly thrilled.

"I've made sure the police are aware of this," said Josh Schamberger, president of the area convention and visitors' bureau. "I don't need Hayden Fry fans who have been there having fun, having some beers, getting in some sort of altercation with Kembrew's group."

McLeod said the protest will annoy fans, but that "robots come in peace." He said he knows he faces long odds in getting the university to repaint the locker room.

Indeed, University of Iowa President Sally Mason said Tuesday that repainting it isn't on her agenda.

"To tear that apart and spend the money right now to redo that just seems like a very low priority to me," she said. "Would a pink locker room have been my first choice? Probably not. But that predates me by quite a little bit."

If he wants attention, dressing as a gay robot should do the trick. Mostly finger pointing and laughter, but attention nonetheless.

What a loser. With all the worlds problems, he wants to bring attention to a locker room of all things. Probably rolls around town in a Prius, wearing a Che T-shirt and tweed jacket

Those walls were painted pink in 1979. No one is going to let them be painted over.

what worries me is when they have to be repainted; will they still be painted pink or will the Univ of Iowa president insist on another color?

With everything needing to be PC, I'd guess that they would get painted over in another color.

I'd expect a lot of backlash if it happened though, which is why I'm hopeful it won't

yeah; the U President's remarks makes me leery, esp when she says they were painted that way long before she arrived

Some people have way too much time on their hand.

First of all, you cant prove the color pink is derogatory or malicious to any gender or political group. Females/gays/lesbians/young females dont own a color.

Waste of time and effort.

Hayden chose pink because he had read psychological studies showing that the color pink reduced levels of aggression and hostility. Studies which are stil cited and applied to this day. Nothing to do with gay or gender issues. Everything to do with self-agrandizment and attention grabbing.

Then again... aren't we all guilty of thought crime?

Re: The Pink Locker room MUST GO.....Really??

He also liked getting into the opponents' heads; he once said if he had them thinking about and talking about the locker room wall color, he and the team would have the psychological edge on the field

Someone saying the pink color is anything more than that is stupid.

I am so glad the University has not budged on this issue.  Keep the walls pink; leave the urinals pink; leave the tiling pink.

Let me guess, this jackass at your university has tenure. I can't stand professors like him. Basically hiding behind their tenure acting like idiots with no way to really get rid of them. What a tool.

Anyways, best of luck on Saturday in your opener. Represent the B1G well brothers & sisters. I guess one good thing about my Gophers opening up on Thursday is now I can just kick back and relax most of Saturday with some good drink and food and flip through the channels without any stress whatsoever.

Go Gophers! Ski-U-Mah!

Re: The Pink Locker room MUST GO.....Really??

The fact that in his past, he has heckled both Republican and Democratic politicians, probably shows that his only agenda, is to get attention, and to stir the pot.

Kind of like if you see a juggler, or some guy playing guitar outside in the pedestrian mall.  You pause for a second, maybe give a polite smile.  Adds a little color to your day, but changes nothing - and you go on with your day.

Sally Mason's comment is somewhat disturbing, but not surprising to me.  I think that if it were up to her, we wouldn't have a football team.

The good news is that it's not just painting walls - its urinals, lockers, everything.  So to make a change is not something easily done - and not without significant expense - so not something that will be done in the middle of the night.

Thanks professor McLeod.  I was ready for some football already.  But after wasting five minutes of my time reading about a nitwit like you, and your handful of lunatic followers,  I'm really ready for some football.

Most professors are great, but some are intellectual snobs.  The pink locker room had nothing to do with gay, but being a soothing/relaxing color.  I thought pink was a breast cancer color and the LGBT community used rainbows.

Prof. McLeod needs to take a chill pill.

More than the walls are pink now - the locker room had a big makeover, and even the toilets and lockers are pink.

Hayden may be wrong about the effect of the color pink.  Others claim that it makes males agitated rather than calm.  But it really doesn't matter, because the whole point was give the visitors something else to think about, and distract them from the business at hand.

I agree (with you and some of the others). If you really are an advocate of gay rights, equality, et. al. aren't there bigger fish to fry? McLeod is trying to make a name for himself rather than address some of the more egregious issues.

The guys name is Kembrow.  He sounds  like some jerk that loves the attention.  Whatever happens to the pink locker rooms, he will find something else to play around with eventually.  Guys that point the finger at something for their own amusement have a pretty negative effect on society in the long run.

I was disappointed to find out that the locker room was "spacious"!!  Geez, Put in some false walls and make it more cramped and pink.  hehehe .  for you dirty minded ones, I was meaning the making the locker room as uncomfortable as possible.

This is just another publicity prank he can add to his list on his website.

He's just out there pushing peoples buttons.  Some day he is going to get himself or one of his supporters seriously hurt.

one of the dozen or so he's done....

When executing a prank it is important to clearly communicate, something that didn’t happen during my face-off with Bill Clinton. Picking an obscure issue made this difficult, for it required too much explanation and backstory to successfully make my point. I was quite conscious of this problem four years later when my prankster alter ego encountered anti-gay Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann. This time I made sure my message was sharp (though still silly). “NOT ONLY ARE YOU A HOMOPHOBE,” RoboProfessor said as she got off her campaign bus, “YOU ARE A ROBOPHOBE!” I trailed close behind her and spoke through a small silver megaphone so I could be heard over the background noise.

Kembrew is a professor of Communications Studies and something about Rhetoric... yadda, yadda, yadda.

None  of you has a clue that has posted about  what this human being... robot? is about.

He is about opening communication.

Kembrew is about being a joker and a prankster.  Something we need in this day and time.

Has anyone done any research or looked into McLeod's work over the last 20 years or so?

He is about making us laugh, opening minds, pissing off the powers-to-be and idiots like you and me.

How about checking out his doc film work?  How about checking out an original law suit including the FCC and copy right laws and intellectual property he started in 1997.  How about reading some of his books and articles and well respected criticisms of said work.

He may have sometimes "failed"  but has been cutting edge in intellectual copy right thoughts and laws , digital and sampling laws and much more in his career.

We need people like Kembrew McLeod as a forward thinking professor at the University of Iowa.

Do none of you get it?

Kelly Hayworth, Coralville IA city manager doesn't get it.... warning police about a peaceful demonstration of people masquerading as "bots" parading around during Fry Fest about pink locker rooms?  omg

God forbid?

Is this Heaven?  No!  it's some closed minded, NAZI  like state soon to come.

PS It's getting old that C'ville continues to be such a parasite (a leech) off of Iowa City and pay nothing back.  Without Iowa City and the University of Iowa, C'ville would be nothing.

Typical pseudo-intellectual gomer who wants nothing else than to see his name in the paper and online. He knows it'll never happen. Just a "look at me! look at me! look at me!" self promoting academician who gets his rocks off bragging to his students about how he made the news.

The gay robot community needs a voice to address the rampant robophobia that's overtaken Iowa City. One poor robot was prescribed some antidepressants after it had witnessed a Mary Kay consultant drive by in a pink Cadillac. So sad.

Since robots come off the assembly line gay and have poor communication skills, Kembrew has taken it upon himself to be a crusader on their behalf. Nothing wrong with bothering people to bring attention to their needs, is there?

The best way to put this topic to bed forever is to beat them at their own "pc" game.

All Iowa has to do is state they painted the locker room pink for cancer awareness. Then it is over forever.
