your starting Defense?

your starting Defense?

Bower is a walk on freshman, correct?

Man, oh man, this is kinda interesting....

First team D: Hardy, Davis, Trinca-Pasat, Hardy up front; Bower, Alston, Spearman at LB; Mabin, Lowdermilk, Lomax, King at DBs. #Hawkeyes

RS frosh, I think.  I think that his competition was Travis Perry, a junior walk-on (now on scholly?) and Josey Jewell, another RS frosh.

Ott needs to be in there in place of one of the Hardys.

I'm not too concerned about starting walk-ons since Iowa has had several good ones under Ferentz.  In recent years seeing Brett Greenwood the first time listed with the 1s was a head-scratcher, but he turned out to be a decent player.  I am a bit surprised to see Mabin as a starter since he was behind both Draper and Flemming in the Spring.

Are people "high" on the possible LB corps? I see it as a position of weakness... Am I nuts?

from BTN.com:  http://btn.com/2014/08/19/football-tour-dienharts-best-from-iowa-practice/

Yes, the Hawkeyes lost some top talent at linebacker. But I think they’ll be OK. Quinton Alston has a lot of experience in the middle. He is set to anchor the core of the defense. Ferentz says the other spots on the outside are up for grabs. Reggie Spearman has become a full-grown man on the weak side. He ran with the first-team today. So fast and now strong and big. Bo Bower also has made some noise on the outside and ran with the “ones” today. Outside man Travis Perry is the classic try-hard Hawkeye who arrived in town as a walk-on. He figures in. It sounds like Josey Jewell is in the mix at an outside slot, too. I think this unit will develop over time into a strong group.

Let's not forget Chad Gilson....KF said (on the video) after the kid's day practice that Gilson (and i think Perry too) was banged up or injured and couldn't go, leaving the door open for others to step in

If Bower starts, that will be very impressive for a walk-on freshman.

I am intrigued by Bower.  If he can come in and take the job from Perry, he could be quite the player.

I BELIEVE!!!

Kirk and the other coaches have been highly complimentary of Alston, who I think will pretty much match Morris' performance from last year.

I think we'll have a dropoff at the other two, with Kirksey being particularly difficult to replace.  He did so many things so well.

i thought he was a walk on freshman; holy crap; has that ever happened?

heck, Dallas Clark did not start as a walk on freshman, for example

this is developing into quite the story

Wasn't Greenwood a 4 year starter who began as a walk-on?

I BELIEVE!!!

I do believe you are correct.  He was a RS FR when he started, I believe.

Well, I think he is a redshirted freshman. But yeah, quite the story.

Re: your starting Defense?

Sounds like there should not be much drop off with Alston and it will be interesting to see how Mabin fares with his combination of size & speed. Also props to coach Morgan. He did a great job with the OLine and now is working his magic with the DLine. The DLine is solid and deep, especially on the interior.
