My Iowa Season Prediction (Let's Read Yours!)

It's that time of year again for the HI (almost) fearless preseason prediction for the Hawkeyes. Check out how publisher Rob Howe sees 2013 unfolding for Iowa:

The whole time reading this I wanted to disagree with the losses but just couldn't do it. I'm not buying into all the hype as I've seen this movie before...I hope for the best but we'll have to wait and see.

GO HAWKS!!

Run the table! Maryland will be the toughest test. Iowa's luck is that they lose a play off game being the only undefeated team of the 4 instead of just going to the title game. Ruddock said on BIG network today, "I hate predictions".

Predictions past UNI are meaningless. Iowa wins comfortably in game 1. All that matters.

Are we gonna make this the official 2014 season prediction thread?

I'd say the one AlSpangler made for last year where he compiled everyone's picks into tiers and eliminated the possibilities as the season went on, worked pretty well.

This doesn't need to be the "official" prediction thread. I just was posting my preseason game-by-gamer and was wondering how fans were seeing things with less than two weeks to go until the opener.

I hope we do better than 8-4. I feel good about our team and believe that barring any serious injuries we will end up at least at 9-2. IMO, anything short of that will be a disappointing, underachieving season.

Re: My Iowa Season Prediction (Let's Read Yours!)

Rob, your predictions are much like mine.  The Pittsburgh game is hard for me to figure.  We lost a close one there a few years back, but don't think any of our current players were on the team when we lost there.  So I go with the home team.

Were going to beat someone worse than expected so I think Indiana might just throw too much to us for them to keep it close while our ground game wears them down.

Don't know how to figure Maryland game, but we don't always play well that far east.

When we are favored at TCF we lose; when the underdog we did well last season.  I think the Minnesota game is a revenge game for them and looks like a loss.  Wish the game was inside the Metrodome!

The Wisconsin game reminds me of our back-to-back games against them in Iowa City in 1974 and 1975.  Billy Merrick ran wild on us in '74, but we returned the favor in '75.  I think we return the favor in '14 and win bigger than expected.

If we beat Wisconsin by a wider margin than expected, I think we find a way to  take down Nebraska in a low scoring physical match-up about 17-13.  They may be called the black shirt defense, but Iowa wears the black.

I think 9-3.

Re: My Iowa Season Prediction (Let's Read Yours!)

I think this team could be very good like the year we started off 9-0 or it could be one of those years where every game is a tight one. I think this is the year we take a step forward. 10 wins is in sight, BUT i think we have a few games that calls just dont go our way. I will say 9-3 but a good chance of 10-2

Well that was 6 years ago so no one on the current roster would have played. Unless there were a whole bunch of jess settles on the team.

9-3 with losses at pitt and Maryland and then another game along the way. Then a bowl victory for a 10-3 season and kirk does it again.

Re: My Iowa Season Prediction (Let's Read Yours!)

One other  point about the Pitt game several  years ago versus today is that season the QB position was unsettled or it was Stanzi's first year.  Maybe someone can remind me, did Christensen possibly start that game?  Either way it was Stanzi's first year so I think we are heading into the game with a more established QB, which will be one advantage.

Iowa should beat ISU & Pitt based on paper I fell.  I think if they do we are headed for a 10+ win season, but if they have a loss it might be more in the 8-9 win range.

Even if Iowa does finish 9-3 if one of the losses is non-conference it wouldn't surprise me if Iowa wins the final two home games against Wisconsin and Nebraska and gets the division tie breaker.  I  could see Iowa losing a couple we think they should but hitting their  stride the last 3-4 games of the year playing their best ball and win out.

At Pitt in '08 was Christensen's last start at Iowa.

I think Iowa goes 4-0 in non conference, 7-1 in conference. I think they beat both Wisconsin and Nebraska at home, their only loss in conference to Maryland on the road. The Pitt and Illinois games are hard to read. Pitt always plays us really well plus they have a head coach in Paul Chryst with a great knowledge of what Iowa does on defense and could exploit some weaknesses. Illinois has an offensive coordinator in Bill Cubit who was 2-0 against Iowa as head coach at Western Michigan...more familiarity with Iowa's tendencies, plus they have a stud QB in Wes Lunt who was one of the top 3 pro-style QB's coming out of high school a couple of years ago. On paper Iowa should win both of those games but Chryst and Cubit present some challenges for Ferentz, whose game plans are already fairly predictable.

As I recall he was hurt and Stanzi came in at half-time, or was Jake replaced due to ineffectiveness?

Jake started vs Pitt, after coming to the rescue the week before to salvage the ISU game, which Ricky started.
So, Jake started, struggled, Ricky came in in the 2nd qtr, and moved the team, and scored a TD...then in the second half, Jake started and stayed in the game to the bitter end.  Iowa narrowly lost. After that, Ricky started the last 8 games.

As for these picks....no doubt that we can see the trap games...Pitt, Md, Minny, Wis, Neb....but I doubt we will lose 4 of 5 of these games.
I see Iowa going 10-2, with losses vs Nebraska and one of the above...probably Maryland.

Christensen started against Pitt and then Stanzi started the following week against ISU. Christensen replaced Stanzi against the Clones and engineered the game-winning drive. That was about the last we saw of him.

Re: My Iowa Season Prediction (Let's Read Yours!)

The hawks go 9-3 and 6-2 in conference. 8-4 wouldn't be a huge success but still gets us to a good bowl game.

Let's hope our D can keep our O on the field! Captain Kirk continues his change and goes a little more for the deep ball and our O and D lines dominate the games.

If Davis can get the O going I like our chances of 9-10 wins. Don't like our chances of running the table in the last 2 weeks. We will lose to either Murland or NW as well.

Unofficial prediction: 10-2

KF needs to get to the B1G championship game, this season, or I'll be disappointed.

Re: My Iowa Season Prediction (Let's Read Yours!)

I pretty much concur with Rob's analysis, with the exception of 8-4 being satisfactory for me. The so called week schedule means nothing. It almost scares me, in that, if history has taught us anything, it's that KF's teams play to the level of their competition. While my official prediction would be 8-4, I think this team should get 9 wins at the very least to be considered a successful season. With some luck and avoiding injuries I could even see 10-2, but realistically I see that as the ceiling, and that's if they get all the breaks. The basement for this team should be 7-5, and that's if the wheels come off. I would be very disappointed in this season at that record. So again, realistically I see us at 8-4, but optimistically I see us at 9-3. I just can't be overly optimistic though, until Iowa proves that they can play lights out when they are picked to do so. Call it a lingering hangover from 2010. noidea

Northern Iowa  - W
Ball State - W
Iowa State - W
@Pittsburgh - L
@Purdue - W
Indiana - W
@Maryland - W
Northwestern - W
@Minnesota - W
@Illinois - W
Wisconsin - L
Nebraska - W

OL should be very good. I think at some point, CJB is going to be the starting QB, say week 7 or 8. Not too worried about the new set of LB'ers. The DL is good enough to mask their inexperience. Once you get past King, I could see concerns with the secondary, but I still expect Iowa to field one of the better defenses in nation.

Re: My Iowa Season Prediction (Let's Read Yours!)

Northern Iowa-Big win.
Ball State-Big win.

Iowa State-comfortable win. Our OL>>>>their DL.

@Pitt-tight win.

@Purdue-comfortable win.

Indiana-tight win.

@Maryland-tight loss.

jNW-tight loss. Terrible.

@Minny-comfortable win.

Illinois-Big win.
Wisconsin-tight win.

Nebraska-comfortable win.

10-2 and likely Western division champs. Lose to MSU in the B1GCG.

Just don't think we lose to Wisky three straight times at home when they have some question marks also.

Re: My Iowa Season Prediction (Let's Read Yours!)

I like to lump together levels of teams and then pick the record amongst that group. Here is how I see it:

Easies opponents (UNI, ISU, Ball St. @Purdue, @Ill) 4-1
Harder games (@Minny, Indiana, @Pitt, jNW) 3-1
Challenging (@Maryland, Wisconsin, Nebraska) 2-1

I see us at 9-3. If could see 8-4 or 10-2 as well, but I think 9-3 is most likely. I think we lose one we shouldn't, and then 2 others that aren't as big of shocks, but losing to the second tier will be disappointing as well when/if it happens. I don't think it would be shocking to drop one @Maryland or losing to Wisky or Neb.

Re: My Iowa Season Prediction (Let's Read Yours!)

I see us anywhere from 7 to 10 wins. There are just a lot of toss-up games on this schedule.

Iowa State, Pitt, Maryland, Indiana, Northwestern, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Nebraska all could go either way.

I can't see us losing to UNI, Ball State, Purdue or Illinois, but two of those are on the road, so who knows?

I could see Iowa going 9-3 but if one of the losses is to Pittsburgh, considering what I've been hearing about all their players who are hurt, suspended or leaving...then I'll be pretty disappointed.

Just sayin.....noidea

Hopefully, drill WI and NE. Other than that, it's a really boring schedule. It's set up for a good Hawkeye run, but there's not many 'can't wait to see that' games.

I was there. Stanzi came in close to halftime after Big Jake threw a pass 10 feet in front of a reciever. I believe he then threw into double coverage costing the Hawks a drive. Coach Ferentz was screaming at him when he came off the field and 2nd half Christensen played. I will never know if O'Keefe talked Ferentz into starting Stanzi the following week but if he did it was certainly one of his coaching highlights.

I was there as well. Very disappointing. Thought we were the better team. The decision to stick with Christensen in the second half cost us the game, IMO.
