Can't look past UNI!

Can't look past UNI!

I was just watching some clips from UNI's media day and they look pretty stout with 18 returning starters.  Their players are jacked up and ready to go as well and I don't think Iowa has the luxury to be looking ahead at all.  In that defense looking ahead to Ball State or Iowa State wouldn't be very expected but you never know.  2009 just pops out in my mind where we needed the two blocked field goals to win.

GO HAWKS!!

Crazy to think that as good of a year as we had in 09, the closest game we had until our loss was against an FCS team O_O

Re: Can't look past UNI!

I do not think this team can afford to overlook anyone.  With the conservative play calling, I have a feeling we will have a lot of close games this season.  We can win everyone.  But then again, with the games being close, anything can happen, including losing to UNI.

That is one of the things that I miss from the Hayden Fry days.  About half of his games were blow outs, where the younger inexperienced players had the opportunity to get their feet wet, and get valuable real game action.  It sees that under Ferentz, that rarely happens.   So then when the teams needs a player to step up due to injury, it is often their first game action.

This will be a very good UNI team. They will be better than Iowa State, Ball State, Purdue and perhaps Maryland and Indiana. They have an excellent QB and a running back projected for the NFL. They will be ready and not intimidated. This game scares me.

Better than Md and IU?  nah. Diggs of Md is a first round pick in the draft. Md has a 6th yearf QB and possibly two first round WRs....and return most of their team.

I respect UNI, but they would be a top half team in the Big Ten, which Md could be.

Hawks will be ready, and will win this game.  Not so sure about beating Md or IU.

IU scored 42 pts a game last year, vs Big Ten teams....you really think UNI would do that?

There is no excuse for Iowa to score less than 40 points in this game.

I don't overlook them either; however, those returning 18 players amassed a sub .500 FCS conference record of 3 wins and 5 losses and finished 3rd from last place in the MVC.......just say'n.

Yeah I'm hoping to whoop em but with kirk never putting the pedal down like Hayden Frye it's hard to see... Plus it'll be Conservative hawks play as they don't want to show anything in the first game I bet.

GO HAWKS!!

Im not overly concerned about UNI, Im sure they will fight hard and be up for this one, but this shouldnt be a game by the 3rd Q given what Iowa has coming back. At maryland and at indiana will be much more likely trap games.

As for KF being conservative, against the lesser opponents, if he can just run on em for a slow kill, especially when he gets a lead, Im fine with that, why do more than you have to win games, its the conservative calls in bigger moments and games where I find concern

UNI had North Dakota State down by two scores in the second half before
having a couple key players go down to injury, and they ended up getting beat.
I too think this game will give Iowa  all they can handle.

It's amusing that some of the same people who are upset that Iowa isn't ranked in the coaches poll are also worried about beating UNI. If Iowa doesn't beat UNI then we're looking at a 2-10 or 3-9 type of season.

Beat UNI...yes, but KF will not run up the score on an " in state " fellow coach/team.

Hayden didn't run up the scores to rub your face in it, a la Bielema at Minnie a couple of years back. He put a lot of points on the board to secure the game and get the younguns some quality time.

Agree that UNI should not take us to the wire, but it could be tricky as the first game of the season.

Are we forgetting NW? They have some people back and a chip on their shoulder after last year went south so dramatically. Kill has some ponies coming back for the Goofs as well.

In short, an easy schedule that will nonetheless keep my nails well trimmed to the cuticle!

This. UNI is talented and will definitely challenge for an FCS National title, but there's a key word in there. FCS. We have more resources than them, and better athletes. If it's a close game, I will be very worried about this year.

Overall it'd be great to take it to both UNI and Iowa State both just to remind them who big brother is! cool

Re: Can't look past UNI!

An Iowa fan that is willing to overlook anybody these days is crazy.  Our NFL conservative mindset allows us to stay with the big boys but that same mentality allows the little guys who have nothing to lose to stay with us as well.

It is what it is.  KF has taught me to never expect Iowa to beat anybody.  I think he likes to keep the suspense up for us fans against teams like Western Michigan, Central Michigan, UNI and virtually any other team we should demolish year in and year out...but never quite seem able to.
