Gazette podcast: Weigers, JVB, Drew Ott and more

Some interesting points brought up:

(1) As we know, with Shimonek leaving, we are down to Jake, CJ and Tyler at QB.

On the Gazette podcast, a scenario was brought up where Jake gets hurt, in comes CJ;  CJ runs, gets hit, his helmet comes off and he has to come out for a play.

The staff surely would not burn Wieger's red shirt for one play?  The Gazette guys were thinking the Iowa staff will have a wild cat play in place....just in case

(2)  At media days, Ferentz basically said we had no passing game in 2012; apparently the transition from KOK to Greg Davis was not easy for anyone; Ferentz said JVB was a much better QB than what we saw; some of the struggles in the passing game were JVB, a lot was no one knew (or felt comfortable in) the offense.

And then when we lost 2/5 of our OL in the Penn State game, things of course only got worse. Became harder to run the fall, play action, and of course, have time to pass.

(3) Drew Ott requested to switch sides on the DL so he could go up against Scherff both in the spring and this summer/fall.  Tells you something about Ott.

The Gazettte guys were thinking that Nebby might be regretting not landing Ott.

Gotta agree that Ott is a monster. Not many D1 players come out of Nebraska and to miss out on him was a huge mistake.

If I recall, Nebraska didn't land Ott because they didn't offer him. Not sure if it was because they didn't see him as a D1 player or if it was because of a lack of scholarships. Either way, their loss was Iowa's gain.

kNU also got JC transfer Gregory in '13.  Ott was a '12 recruit.  Perhaps kNU already knew (or was banking on), in '12, that Gregory would be a Fusker.  Who knows, though.

Re: Gazette podcast: Weigers, JVB, Drew Ott and more

i googled it;

As part of the 2012 class, Drew Ott picked the Hawkeyes over offers from Kansas State and Ohio University. He's from Giltner, located in south central Nebraska, where he played eight-man football. Ott at the time of his commitment was  6-foot-4, 235-pounds.

There was no offer from Nebraska. Ott said that NU considered him a tight end and took a commitment from Sam Cotton, son of Nebraska assistant coach Barney Cotton.

The Hawkeyes saw Ott as a defensive end.

"I just really like Iowa, I really like the coaches and the program. It made my decision a lot easier since Nebraska wasn't going to offer, so then I didn't have to have all my neighbors telling me to go to Nebraska, but overall I just really like Iowa and I think it will be a good fit."

Ott received a preferred walk-on from Nebraska knowing he was a local kid they thought he would walk on. Same with Meiers, who had a walk-on offer as well. I believe Nebraska had others rated higher, but I know I'm good with both these guys being Hawkeyes!

Scherff played QB in high school. There is our wild cat.

it is interesting how Iowa projected Ott to the DL where NE saw him as a TE....gotta give the Iowa coaches some love; they know talent and are very good at projecting where a certain sized teenager will fit into their program

I wonder if Ott can make it to the NFL?

If that happened and I was on defense, I'd be terrified.

he would probably hand off to Tiny (MW) and then be lead blocker

hmmmm.....i kinda like this idea; put Scheff in as a wild cat, hand off to MW, and then be the extra blocker

This could be where Scheel comes in handy.....use his red-shirt instead of Ty's

Wisky is replacing their front 7 as well

I wonder....just wonder.....if Iowa's OL is gonna have some fun this year running the ball and pass protecting

Re: Gazette podcast: Weigers, JVB, Drew Ott and more

There is at least one walkon QB on the roster in Justin Joyce. If they need a QB for one play, Joyce will come in.

If Rudock and Beatherd both get hurt, the best QB will play. Which might mean Wieger, but I'd bet Joyce would get the call, since he has a full year in the offense.
