He came in with a completely new system and a program on probation and went 12-0. Like it or not, he gets it done. Blind acceptance of mediocrity needs to stop, both with the Iowa program and with our conference.

I'm not sure what is funnier...Harty's article or someone posting it as something substantive (which I can only assume, since it was submitted without commentary). I can't speak for other Big Ten schools, but Iowa pays Ferentz top 5 money to recruit sub-25 cohorts (heck, sub-50 cohorts). Seriously, is this what we expect out of the "dean" of B1G coaches? I don't expect Iowa to be a serious contender for anything ever again as long as Ferentz is the coach.

RE: Meyer wrong to call out BTN coaches.
Sorry, I don't buy it. The whole ranking and "star" recruiting nonsense is a self-fulfilling prophesy. Those recruits are ranked high BECAUSE they have interest from the SEC. The same recruits could be courted by the Big Ten and be "3 star" guys. Likewise, the "national rating" is heavily skewed towards the SEC because they are simply EXPECTED to be better.
Iowa has had plenty of talent over the last several years, 2010 especially comes to mind, and we simply were not able to do anything with it. The problem is not in recruiting, it is in game-day coaching.

Re: Meyer wrong to call out BTN coaches.
Are you kidding me? Let's be realistic. My dumb ass could recruit a top ten team to Ohio State! According to Scout's 2013 ratings, there are 2-5* & 23-4* recruits in the state of Ohio. That means there were 25 kids that grew up dreaming of playing for their home state university. I have also done some research on recruiting. Since 2002, Approximately 50% of all 4&5* recruits, in the nation, commit to in state schools. If Ohio State offers, do you think these kids will turn them down to play at Cincy? Even Iowa, with a Big12 school in Ames, has more competition for in state recruits than Ohio State. Then, since you have a built in nucleus of highly rated players every year, how difficult would it be to lure other highly rated player to come and play for a program that always has the potential of a national title? You would have to be deaf, dumb and blind not to see the inherent advantages of Ohio State and other football programs, in or adjacent to, our most populous states (in terms of recruiting potential). Do you think it is just a coincidence that many of those states are clustered in SEC territory? Now, with A&M in the SEC, you can throw Texas in with Florida and get two of the 3 mega states, (again in terms of recruiting potential). Hmm! I wonder why it is always some variation of the same 10 or 12 teams ranked in the top 15 recruiting classes in the nation?

Meyer's comment would have been more impressive had he recruited this class to any other Big ten school other than Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State or Nebraska.

RE: Meyer wrong to call out BTN coaches.
I have not posted here in a while but I do read at least once a week. I kind of feel disconnected being in different divisions and this might get worse with expansion. So first I just want to say hello to all of you and am looking forward to finally getting to play you again.I wanted to comment about Urban and what he said. Unlike tress the senator he does not have much of a filter when he speaks. He says what he feels and it took a little getting use to. In his first meeting with our players he told the several O-Line they were basically fat and had to lose weight if they wanted to play. I guess a few of them had to take the staff Nutritionist when the went grocery shopping. I think he is right to a point in what he said. He was not just calling out the coaches and did propose other methods such as more night games etc. less 12:00 starts to expose more of the country to B1G football. I know we all want the B1G to better. He really just said what he felt and it wont be the last time he offends. He is not that diplomatic.

RE: Meyer wrong to call out BTN coaches.
OK, so if you give Ferentz 30 scholarship offers every year and let him kick the worst 5 players off of the team that you know will never contribute on the field, so that after 5 years, you have given out 150 scholarships, instead of 125 (rules say 25 per year) would the Hawks have a better team? yes.
Would they have a significantly better team? Considering that you would have an ENTIRE CLASS of additional recruits to choose from, (150 - 125 = 25 more scholarships given out) you probably have MUCH better back-ups for when the starters get hurt. I say, "YES," to a significantly better team.
The Big10 needs to call out the SEC and have the NCAA put a stop to the over-signing ORRRRRRRRR make a decision to compete. To compete with the best organizations, you have to match the things that successful programs do in order to get there. Oversigning will definitely make your football team better. It is better for the wins and losses.
Is it better for the kids you offer scholarships to? Certainly NOT for the kids who get "dumped." Sometimes you have to wake up to REALITY vs PERCEPTION. The reality is that you need to oversign (and purge) to compete. The BIG10 has taken the high road and has a max of 25 scholarships per year. It will continue to be a substandard product on the field (vs the SEC, at least) until they oversign like the SEC does, or make the NCAA enforce the rules.
This will be a SHOCK to everyone, I'm sure, but the NCAA has FAILED on it's enforcement. Tuly a shock.
Now, the B1G has made a decision over the last decade. They will not allow member schools to oversign. (IMO, the B1G has it's priorites straight, but that comes at a cost). The reality is that they will not compete with the upper echelon's of the SEC until they start oversigning and purging.
The only thing left is to debate whether you LIKE the decision that the B1G has made. Do you want the Hawks and other B1G teams to put these kids' future ahead of winning?

RE: Meyer wrong to call out BTN coaches.
I have no problem with his comments, he is 100% spot on. He is basically calling out Iowa here. Schools that recruit well are the ones that tend to win. We pay our coach like a top 5 school and he recruits like we are a mid major. Iowa fans who blindly support KF despite the piling evidence that he is not the man to be leading the program are a huge problem at Iowa. KF loves to say "I keep going back to the 80's" when he answers questions, too bad he doesnt realize its 2013 and the entire landscape of college football has changed. meyer doesnt pussyfoot around when he talks to the media, he gives answers to questions, he is motivated to win. I am not sure what motivates KF

Re: Meyer wrong to call out BTN coaches.
Very interesting read and Urban Meyer said what he said to his schools home town radio station. Just because some coaches are kind of plain and skirt issues with cliches and excuses with their hometown media, doesn't mean all coaches will to do the same.
Urban Meyer has the makings of a real good thing about to re-happen in Columbus and Hoke the same in Ann Arbor. I guess you don't get back to the top of the mountain by being nice, worrying about what other people say and not recruiting your A$$ off! The other B1G coaches are going to have to step their game up just to be competitive on the recruiting trail as well on the field because Meyer and Hoke obviously mean business. And most coaches probably shouldn't look at what Meyer said as offensive, as much as motivation to help stop what has been going on in the B1G as far as being competitive.
Teams are gonna have to get it together or get crushed by B1G brother Michigan and O$U because it looks like they aren't about to go back to what happened to them the last few years. I can only hope the Iowa Football coaches and admins. see what is going on with the big boys and do what ever it is they have to do to make the necessary adjustments and get the right people to help get in line with them.

It's not just us. I don't know if anyone recognizes something that the three schools above have in commmon?

RE: Meyer wrong to call out BTN coaches.
It is painfully obvious there are absolutely no mitigating factors that make it difficult to compete with Ohio State & Michigan. Aplington-Parkersburg should be competitive with West Des Moines Valley as well, if it wasn't for their lazy or otherwise worthless coaches. Does the BIG have a winning record vs the SEC over the last five to seven years? I don't know. Are you trying today that the Bigten is now par with the SEC ?

I don't even know what to do with this. Plenty of talent? Wow. There are a lot of recruiting flops, but go ahead and look at Alabama's recruiting classes, LSU, etc and compare to NFL Draft, wins, and BCS appearances... Now lets compare Iowa's... your welcome.

Re: Meyer wrong to call out BTN coaches.
I remember years ago when HF took Iowa to the Rose Bowl for the first time in years. I was listening to a Michigan radio call in show and the caller was angry that Iowa was going. Said it is suppose to be Michigan or Ohio State every year. The host asked what the other teams were suppose to do. The caller said get Michigan or Ohio State ready for the Rose Bowl. That is how those fans think.
I was also at the Iowa, Ohio State game that Iowa won 16-8. It was the game right after the killings in Iowa City and the Hawks took the Tiger Hawk emblems off their helmets. Was sitting next to a Ohio State fan and he was livid. Wanted Cooper fired right then. Have some of our fans become like him.

Arrogant or not I agree with his statment and feel UM wants to see the Big Ten succeed and we need to step it up. I look at the state of Illinois this last year. They were robbed by SEC schools of that talent. There is plenty of talent in the midwest. We just need to step it up.
