Crazy Optimistic
Call me crazy but I expect a good year next year. Here are my reasons
Veteran O line 2 proven rbs Weismann and bullock Veteran lbs More potential on d line with young talent Veteran tight ends Veteran kicker Qbs always play better in their first year at Iowa
Sure there are areas of concen but we are set up to play Iowa football which is controlling the clock by running the ball.

RE: Crazy Optimistic
No future nfl linebackers will make the hawks to easy to run on to get better than 6-6. We need to average at least 110 yards per game rushing allowed on defense. Cjf dropped to many passes this year. When we Finally did throw him the ball. Wr always a problem at Iowa getting nfl talent at that position during the ferentz years.
Thank you Gary Barta and Sally mason you ate my football team and ruined Kirk. " lifetime contract security equals lowered incentive in even the best of humans."

RE: Crazy Optimistic
I agree with BngBob. But I am a bit more cautiously optimistic. Our defense hinges on our D-Line with the new faces. They have to keep the O-Line off our linebackers. We should have more speed and athleticism the next couple years.
I remember CJFed dropping one in the 4th quarter against ISU(I think) but other than that, how many other drops did he have? I think he's got pretty damn good hands.

You probably are a bit crazy and surely can appreciate your optimism. However, there will be many reasons to think that a winning season not possible.

KFs careful coaching abilities and apathy will diminish any advantage we may have. Personally, I would be shocked if we got over four wins next season.

Re: Crazy Optimistic
I think we get seven wins next year if o-line stays heathly. We would have had a different season had we not lost 2 starters in Oline this year. We were not a good team overall last year, I felt this way going into the season. Next year even though our schedule is tougher, so our we.
Put me down for 7 wins even with our high powered horizontal passing game.

Cjf does not have as good of hands as say Brandon Myers and some of our other tight ends who are in the nfl. Cjf had at least four drops on the year and we hardly threw to him. Those are drive killers. He will need to fix that next year. He can make the great play and you all remember that. But our good teams under Kirk had tight ends and Wr that hung on to the standard passes all year long. 6-6 is the best that can happen in 2013 with the talent that we have as almost everybody else in the legends will be improved.

I would not classify that as "hardly threw to him." I guess I don't remember the "great plays" he made, but I also don't remember all these drops you talk about. Anyway, I don't want to argue, but I think he is a real weapon if used properly. I would love to see him with 60+ catches next year. And with the current offensive philosophy of throwing the shortest passes possible, he may get to 60 this year. God I hate our offense.

RE: Crazy Optimistic
The D-Line and O-Line will be much better this year. Weisman will be back.
Iowa has a shot as long as we have a capable QB (same as any given year). Take this exact same team and put a capable QB on it, you have a 7-8 win squad.

Re: Crazy Optimistic
After watching the offense we all saw this season, I'm not sure I can be too optimistic. We had too many players hurt this season on offense, hope they can stay healthy next season. Throw in a qb who has never taken a D1 snap and it could get ugly. I do think we will see a rotation at qb though - one season to late.
On D it is a crap shoot with our inexperienced line again, then throw in a certain middle linebacker that overpersues to the outside on run plays which allows running backs the ability to cut back to the middle at it could be another long season. We should be pretty good against the pass downfield though with Lowry, Lomax, Lile, and Law as long as he knows what is going on. I'd leave another free safety on the bench but think the coaching staff will go for experience over athleticism. Damn. Too bad.
If the Hawks can win 7 games in 2013 it will be a miracle in my eyes. I think they lose 2 non-con games verse ISU and Northern Illinois and hope they beat Western Michigan at Kinnick. If they go 1-3 then forget it, the Big Ten schedule could be 0-8. I could really see this team going 2-10 with the Big Ten schedule laying out the way it does. If KF isn't fired after that then Barta needs to be fired. Hope I am wrong though and Hawks can somehow manage to make things happen but I just don't see it with this coaching staff.

Re: Crazy Optimistic
3-9 and 1-7 is my low mark for the hawks. But 2-10 and 0-8 is possible if we have all those injuries on offense again. After the injuries the hawks reminded me of the 1973 hawks 0-11. On offense anyway.

The guy has great hands. He may have dropped a couple during the year, but he ended up the go to guy when the Hawks needed a first down. If he has such poor hands why did Iowa go to him more as the year went on? His 2 biggest games were the last 2 of the year against, arguably, our stiffest competition. If Fiedorowicz has such bad pass catching abilities, why did he grab 45 passes during the year and our 4 other TE's combined for a total of 15? He is not in the lineup for his blocking abilities. Are the 4 other TE's even more incompetant? Branden Meyers is a very good TE. He has been targeted 98 times this year with 75 receptions. That is a "catch rate" of 76.5% which is 3rd highest in the league. But he is also tied for 16th in the league with 7 dropped balls. That is roughly the same percentage of drops that Fiedorowicz had last year. Thank you for making my point. And I do like the fact that YOU are comparing Fiedorowicz to Dallas Clark. I had the opportunity to sit with the Vice Chairman of the Colts organization for half of an NFL game a few years back. He raved about Clarks hands. He has just a bit more credibility than you do, sad to say.

What bothered me though was how when he did catch many of the passes too many times he was brought down by one small guy in the secondary. With that frame I didn't expect breakaway speed but more of an abitlity to break at least one tackle.

Re: Crazy Optimistic
Our schedule is pretty darn tough, but I think we will be tougher too, 7 or 8 wins in my humble opinion. As for CJF, he should be our first option when we get inside the 10. next year he should average 7-10 receptions for 60-75 yds and a TD. He is way to big of a weapon to only have 1 TD like he did this past year.

I can't ever remember him breaking a tackle and turning a small gain into a big one. This is what I recall about CJF most this season--he does go down with minimal contact. He strikes me as a tall and big WR much more than a TE, which is why I think we are in good shape next year, with a 'traditional' TE (either K-C or Hamilton) opposite the (faster, I think)and taller CJF. So much depends on the QB, and that is as big of a ?? as you can possibly get (meaning ZERO returning snaps), so.....but still, the running game should be solid, we have experience in the OL, and so we may not need an elite QB to be a decent offense. Our WR's are a bit of a ?? but I think there's talent there, so I'm not all that worried. On defense, we will be good IF we get good DL development, IF the LB's improve, and IF the DB's improve. In short, lotta 'IFs' there, so I'm kind of neutral on our chances to have a good defense: maybe we will, maybe we won't. But I think there's at least some likely young talent that might mature over time, so I'll try and be optimistic on this.

I did not say cjf was bad just not good enough talent to get us to top three in big ten. You can't compare Brandon Meyers in nfl to cjf. It is a different game. You must compare his big ten career to cjf Big ten Career. And yes cjf goes down way to easy. --------------------------------------------- --- madsam0297 wrote: Mavis81 wrote:

I remember CJFed dropping one in the 4th quarter against ISU(I think) but other than that, how many other drops did he have? I think he's got pretty damn good hands.
---------------------------------------------
Cjf does not have as good of hands as say Brandon Myers and some of our other tight ends who are in the nfl. You are making it sound like he dropped 4 out the the 20 passes we threw to him all year. He had 45 receptions, so I would figure we targeted him at least 60 times.
--------------------------------------------- I like Arguing with you forget brains that don't understand what nfl talent is even after watching Brandon Meyers and Dallas Clark for years. Then can't Recognize the difference when it is not there. Four drops are way to many if you are trying to win the league title. I hate our offense also we can agree on that. That's true too.
I agree, CJ had as good a year as anybody although that might not be saying much. What bothered me though was how when he did catch many of the passes too many times he was brought down by one small guy in the secondary. With that frame I didn't expect breakaway speed but more of an abitlity to break at least one tackle. ---------------------------------------------

With that frame I didn't expect breakaway speed but more of an abitlity to break at least one tackle. He goes down way too easy in my opinion as well.
CJF needs Mike Ditka to show him how to toughen up!..Not sure what you mean here...we lost one of the top DB's in the nation...They will need to start all over! I know we have Lowry and he's good but needs to stay injury free...We have Sean Draper who I heard could be real good..Anthony Gair...not sure what's been said about him...Kevin Buford...same not sure...Ruben Lile I heard has the most potential...and Lomax should be good...it just depends on which one comes to the top...we need a good DC to make this group good because the base Defense isn't going to get us more than 5-6 wins...
