floridahawk wrote: Good point about taking JVB out. I have often thought that taking him out for at least a quarter, even early in the season, would have been a good thing. First of all, you temporarily stop JVB's confidence slide which has been out of control since the beginning of the season. Secondly, JVB would realize that our whole season doesn't rest entirely on his shoulders. Lastly, we would get our backup the experience "just in case". Come on KF, playing Rudock is way overdue!
Seems like a logical assessment, but we know logic doesn't factor in, don't we. JVB has 0 chance of getting drafted, so why not chalk the rest of the season up to gaining experience for the young players? Rudock will be much better prepared to lead this team next year, if he takes his lumps during a losing season.

USCG aren't you the one who implied in an earlier post that those of us who wanted to see Rudock were having "wet dreams"? You must really have something against him.

Do you have any reasons for your belief or are you such a JVB advocate that that is all that matters?

and who's to say Rudock a RSFR is ready to play?
Sokol is RS'ing, Beathard is RS'ing, who else is KF supposed to list as the #2?
Derby was the #2 as a RSFR and now he is gone.
I guess he could list Weinke but he is a punter and the holder on extra points and FG'S

I think it would be a good guess that Wienke is a punter because Rudock beat him out for #2.

actually its quite simple. why burn a RS on Sokol or Beathard just to make you happy and going into the 9th game of the year to get a few meaningless snaps, if need be Rudock can and will play if needed.

RE: Play Rudock!!!!

When I post that Rudock sucks, it's pure speculation that many of you are posting that Rudock should be playing because Vandy isn't playing well.

The season is not over yet. Yes I wish Rudock would get more playing time but if Vandy gives the team the best chance to win then why not keep the better of the two on the field?

So I posted about Rudock just to prove a point about speculation. I, like all of you, do not know how Rudock would do but I have to trust the coaching staff about their personnel.

The whole team, not just Vandenburg, is struggling.

worring about a RSFR QB not getting snaps.. has a RSFR Stanzi did not take a snap. in Fact Arvell Nelson was the backup and had just 1 pass attempt all season. Stanzi never took a snap til he was a RSSO and he did just fine. this Idea that Rudock nwill suffer without getting a snap is crazy, only in posters mind will this hurt him

I am glad to hear that there was no real basis for your "Rudock sucks" comment. BTW, there are many from the top high schools in Florida as well as elite programs including Dallas Texas Skyline, Camden County Georgia, Columbus Ohio UpperArlington, and Byrnes in Duncan, SC who would also disagree with your assessment of him!

RE: Play Rudock!!!!

Ok fellas there is no point arguing about this. All I ask is this:

What are they risking by giving Rudock playing time?

Now everyone will have their own answer to that question, but here's mine. I don't think there is anything to lose. Even if Rudock plays poorly it can't get much worse than what we've seen out of JVB. Plus Rudock has a legitimate shot to be the guy next year so you're getting him some very valuable playing time, not to mention in game cohesion with future members of the offensive line and receiving core.

My biggest concern if Ferentz doesn't let Rudock see the field is he and his family will decide to go elsewhere. Honestly, I wouldn't blame him one bit. He's on a team where the guy getting the nod in front of him has played horrible football and he hasn't even been given a shot to show what he can do. Not one gosh darn shot. Not even in a blowout loss to PSU. Heck, I don't care if he looks like crap in practice. I'm assuming if he's #2 on the depth chart he's our next best option. So let's see what he can do in a live game situation. It isn't going to hurt anything. JVB is a big boy. He knows darn well he isn't producing at the level he's expected to. God forbid you give another kid a chance.

Re: Play Rudock!!!!

Maybe Ruddock and his family dont care. He came thinking he wouldnt be the starter until next year anyway. Either way he still has the ability to be a 3 year starter. For the people that say he doesnt have or its apparent hes not the starter next year. I would be shocked if hes not the guy next year if hes not oh well but I would be shocked. I love his short quick release from the ear hole not winding up like JVB and his footwork looks good when I saw him. The only thing I dont understand is the not giving him any of them any playing time when they are way up or way behind. I would love to see some of these freshmen recievers and Ruddock get there feet wet. Next year it could be like Tates SR year zero experience  wideout.

The key word in your entire post is "maybe". What if they do care? What if he decides to transfer because he thinks he deserves a chance? You know as well as I do there would be a meltdown from the fanbase because Ferentz didn't play him when he had some obvious opportunities to. There's nothing to lose at this point in the season. Give the kid a chance.

Largely agree with all here.  My only addition - team risks virtually nothing just letting JR go in for just one series if not more. Three handoffs to RBs.  Nothing else.  Just that one small act would have morale & motivational effect on entire team, especially on JVB once he comes back in.

Absolutely nothing to lose.

There is a big difference between playing a Freshman and he makes mistakes and a 5th year Senior that has only thrown 3TDs through 8 games and has made a ton of mistakes.

redhawk55, every time I see your posts I envision someone on crank typing 1000 words per minute and missing a word here, a word there. Is your keyboard constantly over heating? Use spell check.

Rudock won't play. Would be great for KF to shake things up though. I think if Rudock starts or even goes in at some point, you will hear either a huge cheer coming from the crowd or just dead silence from the pure 'awww' moment developing before them.

Well put.  JVB has a huge amount of experience.  He is what he is.  We know what he is.  He is not going to get better.  I am sure he is a great guy.  But we have to start giving the younger players some snaps.

I think our coaches studied hard on the side of loyalty and NOT MOTIVATION.
I see no reason to say to JVB that "Hey, if you can't hit an open receiver in stride, so that we get some Yards after catch, then we are going to give the young guy a chance.  If that doesnt MOTIVATE JVB, then he should not be at the QB position at all.

And I bet JVB would be the first guy to concede that he is not cutting it.  He has had his chance, now it is someone else's turn.  Kind of like Obama!

At least play Rudock a meaningful series next week. JVB is scared out there.
We're a complete mess on offense; this season is over. At least we're stuck with JVB just for three more games.
JVB has had one great game ('09 OSU), and, blah. Nothing. I don't know if I fault him or the staff for offering him a scholarship to begin with. No starting quarterback at Iowa should be a product of Iowa high school football.

When KF said after the Central Michigan game, "I am happy James is our quarterback for the next 8 games" that told me everything I needed to know about KF and his decision making process regarding James. 8 games is regular season, 9 games include a bowl game. There will be no 9th game this season. KF can go with JVB.

JVB has had a few good games in his career how about the Pitt game...heck he had a good season last year...and I was excited at the beginning of the year...with new coaches, and senior qb...maybe you meant this year...but not sure about your last statement...I would love to see an Iowa product lead this team to the Rose Bowl or NC...I know I won't with KF at the helm...

At least the good thing is that this team isn't making a bowl and therefore we can quit wasting valuable time on JVB as soon as humanly possible.
