Summer AAU is coming to an end

Summer AAU is coming to an end

Today the Ga Metros and Allisha Gray attempt to win the USJN in Washington DC. They are in the semifinals and if they win their next 2 games will win their second in a row.

It may be a bit more complicated for them as their center M Webb was injured and is not with the team. Good luck to the Metros as they are making a claim to the no 1 club team this summer. Allisha has had a fantastic summer.

Jamie Cherry's Garner flames lost in the Quarters last nite at the USJN nationals. They put on a very good showing considering they are local eastern UNC talent.

AOT with Diamond and Te'a are in the championship bracket at the Battle of the Bayou. Both have had an excellent tourney so far. Fullcourt has a video clip of AOT.

I know Stephanie is playing in a Tournament up in Indiana and continues to have a great summer. Our coaches went up to see her play Monday. Her Indy Gym Rats Green still has the Nike Nationals in Augusta in August I believe. If anyone has any info about her teams and Stephanie's results please post it. What I am hearing is she is really tearing it up.

Finally Jessica Washington is taking the rest of the summer off with AAU and is resting a sore knee I believe getting ready for the Under 17 USA world championships.

All in all these 6 recruits have given a glimpse of what is in store for the Tar Heels in the future. Given what we have adding these players to our rosters will be scary that is if you are a UNC opponent.

Get ready to be one of the main topics of conversation on other boards for the next few years. No matter what is written you can considere it a compliment since you are now a threat to them.

Once UNC c/o 13 arrives on campus, there will be another shift in WCBB. These young ladies are good, very good, and other fan bases have taken notice!

If I was a coach this is one type of pressure I would look forward to. I can promise you Coach Hatchell and the rest of the staff are just waiting for the chance to coach up this group. Similar to a little one waiting to open a bunch of packages at christmas.

UNC 2014 commit Jamie Cherry was at the USJN in DC this week, the IH watched her play two games, and she's improved tremendously, playing a lot more under control, and getting a lot more assists to go along with the prolific scoring...

I heard she has a good chance of being a top 5 pg in the 2014 class. If so, that's top 5 pgs in 2013,2014 and 2015. Very impressive.

Re: Summer AAU is coming to an end

According to the Battle of the Bayou website bracket AOT with Diamond and Te'a won the tournament defeating Essense. This is early and all I have is the Brakets with AOT at the end. Congrats also to Lexie Brown and Peyton Whitted and all of the Aot team.

BTW this is Diamonds last AAU tournament I believe. What a way to go out more to follow for sure.

We would all appreciate any updates.

It seems like players have been coming to UNC and getting worse the longer they stay ... I think this class could be the end for Hatchell ... I hope I am wrong but that is just how I feel ... Getting talent at UNC has never been and never will be a problem in Chapel Hill ... Great location, great school, great history, and great campus ... We have been getting top recruits but something is wrong in the women's basketball department

Re: Summer AAU is coming to an end

Absolutely agree. The good news is that recruiting is off the charts--the bad news is that SH is still the HC. And after listening to all the reports about how UNC has no recruiting budget, we somehow managed to come up with enough money to send Coach Stafford-Odom to the west coast numerous times, plus send her throughtout the SE. It is going to be interesting if SH can keep all of these high-caliber recruits satisfied, as too much talent can be a problem as formidable as too little talent. I do not believe that SH has the "people" skills or the coaching skills to deal with a really talented squad of competitive athletes.
I am interested in the WBB schedule this year. BC will have his hands on this schedule, so perhaps SH will no longer gorge herself on cupcakes throughout the pre-conference schedule. But playing a tougher pre-conference schedule should be the most beneficial route for a team that is loaded with really talented players.

Re: Summer AAU is coming to an end

Coaches are often overrated when it comes to player improvement. The elite players are going to get better no matter who their coach is. The true impact of what coaches can do is dole out playing time. If players don't do what you want, are you tough-minded enough to keep them on the bench? Conversely, are you smart enough to get said players to do what you want?

Even better is when the coach is able to recruit players who will police themselves. If there are players on the team who will grab you by the throat and say, $#@^& you better practice hard! All you need the coach to do is roll out the scouting report and the game plan.

When Geno and PHS win championships those are the type of teams they have, when they don't; they have to fill that role and the results are different.

Coach Hatchell has had that before with her championship squad, her Tracy Reid teams, and with Latta,Larkins,Latoya, and Little. If she can sustain the momentum, that the 2013 class has built; and bring in talented, hungry and tough-minded players; then we will see a few years of great results. However, everyone has to remember that only PHS and Geno has had that year in and year out success, and there are a handful of programs(ourselves included) who go thru cycles of greatness and simply being good.

Re: Summer AAU is coming to an end

Attitude of the player has A LOT to do with development.

The Latta, Little, Larkins and LaToya gang had the mentality that they were going to OUT WORK anyone anywhere.

Camille did not like to horse around and be silly, she was professional from day one! Her mentality was NO PLAYING UNTIL WE GET THIS PLAY DOWN, or MAKE THESE 100 FTS or whatever it was. She helped everyone FOCUS.

Latta HATED to lose, and feel inferior so that drove her to work and PROVE she belonged.

That group was accountable to each other and pushed each other. The WILL to win and NEVER settle for less than what you did the day before.

That type of mentality has to be in MULTIPLE players at the same time in order to be successful, not just one player here or there.

Someone has to be okay with being the BAD COP and getting in their team mates faces about hustling, and working and getting better. They have to make a collective agreement and mindset from the get go!

I will say this... I have had the oppurtunity to watch Diamond, and Allisha both play live, and if either of the two regress then its time for change in Chapel Hill!

Re: Summer AAU is coming to an end

Appears to be the exception rather than the rule. I know specifically of 1 such player recently who may have regressed, particularly in her last yr. I believe the reason for that was that she saw an opportunity and was training for an entirely different sport.

Shegog improved dramatically from her jr to sr years. Laura could have been better offensively but she lost some practice and pt obviously because of injuries.

Degraffenreid, Lucas, McCants, She'la White, Ruffin-Pratt ...

And I believe it all started when they started little McCants shot all those 3 pointers when she couldn't shoot a lick

You cant be serious. None of those players regressed. Degraffs scoring took a drop her senior year because she tried to be more of a playmaker. The Lucas and McCants thing is not even worth me discussing and TRP has yet to be healthy in a TarHeel uniform so I'm not going to waste my breath on that. I'm not sure why certain "fans" have it out for Sylvia, but its ridiculous. She is the sole reason the UNC WBB is even worth discussing. Yes she pads wins by scheduling cupcakes and hasn't won a Natty in 400 years. I get that. But at the same time, I don't know how many coaches could've did what she did last year. 20 wins with 7.5 players. A top 5 finish in the ACC. That was a tremendous coaching job. People can say what they want about her coaching abilities, but wbb is a talent driven sport. For example, Vandys coach is considered one of the best offensive coaches in the sport. How many titles she got... exactly. Why? Because the talent level isn't high enough. Recruiting wins championships. On paper, UNC has never had a class as talented as 2013. Just think about it, a player like Danielle or Megan could go from 20+ mpg to not even seeing the court if these players are as talented as advertised. IMO, Sylvia has done a solid job with the talent shes landed. The program has been solid with solid talent and was great when it had great talent(Latta years)

Imo, Degraffenreid regressed her sr year. She'la While was better suited to play the two. I did not see Italee Lucas regress, actually I thought she got better. Im just hoping THE TEAM gets better, and have UNC back in the tournament.

Coach Hatchell is the best thing to ever happen to UNC women's basketball but lately her teams have gone soft. I think it is because she has gotten a little older and a little softer herself and has developed into the grandmother role. Sylvia has had 3 top 10 classes in the last 5 years so saying she hasn't had talent is not an argument.

Re: Summer AAU is coming to an end

Shes had good talent. That's all. Not great. Shes had NY strip talent and 2013 is filet mignon. Had that 2009 class(TRP, Wally, Krista and Cierra) stayed together and healthy, I truly believe they would've accomplished no less than elite 8 status. The only player that has actually played healthy out of that class was Krista. So you cant really count that as great talent because it never made it to the floor healthy.

Re: Summer AAU is coming to an end

What some try to put out as fact are simply opinions. Heck we all have them. Some for whatever reasons dont like certain Coach or players. What has always bothered me personally is when the facts point to the opposite of someones opinion. When they say somethings green and its blue.

Well here is a fact. Last years occ schedule was weak from an rpi standpoint. We did have UCONN South Carolina and Penn State but the rest were basically bunnys. What we did also have was the toughest in conference schedule of any team. We played duke maryland and miami twice.

Recruiting is a hard call but by the numbers over the last 10 years we have trailed both Duke and Maryland. During that time frame we have 4 conference championships. We have had some great classes the 2009 is one that come to mind. Breaking down that class only Pratt was top 10 coming in at 9. What made us the no 2 class was the volume. We had Wally Krista and Cierra Warren all coming in the 30s. As was mentioned before only KG has played all 3 years healthy Williams and Warren transferred and we know about Pratt and Rolle.

Our recruiting hit a level we have not seen with this 2013 class. We have really never had the star power this class has. 2014 and 2015 looks good too.

Here is one fact that most results oriented fans really dont take into consideration. Last year we missed the NCAAs. That is what a lot of chatter was about. When 2 of your best players are injured for over 50% of the season 2 are not available until after jan,2 are lost for season and you dont really have a game tested pg 21-11 looks pretty darn good. If say Jessica Breland doesnt get Hodkins Lymphoma or Ivory Latta doesnt blow out her knee or Alex Miller does'nt rupture her patella tendon what would that of meant. Injuries effect the strength of a recruiting class.

Historically on the national scene we have not done as well recruiting as some of our top 10 counter parts that is up until this year. We have been however best in region. But that eliminates 75% of available propects.

What I will say that National Championships are won with star caliber players ie no 1 ranked recruits. Its a fact Britany Griner Maya Moore Tina Charles Candace Parker etc. Other big name recruits have gotten their teams to the ff ie Diggins Ogwimike etc. That is something that none of our recruiting classes have ever had....up until possibly this 2013 class.
