The end of the ACC

The end of the ACC

dev.chuckoliver.net/2012/05/fs...-is-inevitable/

The fact that Georgia Tech is talking with the Big 12 gives you a pretty good idea as to the future of the ACC. The conference has been out flanked by its peers and will have likely have its work cut out to ensure its survival. It is very likely that you see the SEC make a play for two ACC institutions. One is likely to be Virginia Tech, the other has long been rumored to be North Carolina State. The Big 10 has always had an eye on expanding into new markets and the ACC possesses institutions in Duke, UNC, Maryland, and UVA that would pair well with their current culture.

We can still get some more Big East teams to join.

If we sit on our hands and miss out on chances to join the Big 12 or the SEC and get further left in the dust I'm going to be royally pissed.

Every time expansion comes up, people make claims about the ACC's imminent demise.  Quick question for all you all "the ACC is doomed" folks, what was the last (and only)  team to leave the ACC?

I'd love to State go to to the SEC and get turned into a Vandy type football team.

If State goes to the SEC and UNC is left in a second tier conference, then we won't be able to recruit our own state worth crap.

Well, I said it on the other thread, duke and UNC will not leave the ACC. Even if we and them are the only two schools left. The PTB's at UNC and duke will not allow it to happen. No way. Period.

We would go the Notre Dame route before we officially left the ACC.

I think that if the ACC started to crumble the PTB would rather have us go independent instead of joining what they see as a lesser conference. I highly doubt we would ever go SEC because people see it as a lesser academic conference.  Big East possibly .

Oh, okay. I would still call going independent leaving the ACC.

And I don't know if UNC could really go the independent route successfully. Notre Dame can do it for historical reasons and its NBC deal. UNC wouldn't have either of those things going for it.

You could cobble something together out of what is left of the Big East along with duke and UNC and have a pretty good basketball conference.

Being an independent is not an option in today's TV market. We wouldn't survive. Being part of a combo conference between the northern ACC schools and the Big East leftovers is our worst case scenario. Our TV contract would probably be cut in half, our ability to recruit the south and even our own state would be diminished severely, and the loss of revenues would ripple throughout the entire athletic department. There are only 3 options for us that work:

1. Finding a way to keep the ACC together and add Notre Dame.
2. Joining the SEC.
3. Joining the Big Ten.

Nothing else will work.

#1 is the only one in the realm of possibilities, and getting the Domers to join the ACC would almost require God to intervene on the ACC's behalf.

Is a basketball-oriented conference out of the question? dook and Carolina are huge names in that space. I could see them anchoring a rebuilt ACC focused on basketball. If State is stupid enough to go the SEC, I will enjoy seeing them get rolled 35-3 on a regular basis.

Actually, this argument appeals to me.  But then, I'm never going to sport the flaming football.

There's a reason football is driving things. There's more money in football and less revenue sharing with the weaker conferences. A basketball oriented conference isn't going to make anywhere near as much as the current ACC does. We're talking about millions of dollars a year in lost revenues... possibly in the range of $10 million a year in lost revenues.

I agree the Domers could be forced to join a conference, and if they do, I'm pretty sure it will be the Big 10.

People are kidding themselves if they don't think that the lost revenues would come back to bite the basketball program down the line. One day Roy will retire and we'll actually have to pay market value for an elite coach. And one day we'll need to replace the Dean Dome. Even if you hate football and only care about basketball, being a part of top flight football conference that has teams competing to play in the new football playoff and that can demand top money when TV contract negotiations come around is important.

Yep.

And I know that there's a lot of SEC hate around here, but the SEC's TV revenue is shared very evenly, which would be a big help to a team like UNC.

Unfortunately, I think Pep's pov is more common within the UNC community than we would like to acknowledge. Which is one reason I believe UNC will not leave the ACC for another conference like the SEC or Big 10.

I really hope this isn't true. If Clemson leaves, then Florida State almost certainly will too. And if that happens, then Georgia Tech's discussions with the Big 12 will heat up and I'm sure Miami will be calling too. The Big 12 would probably want to add a 4 team pod from the southeast.

Re: The end of the ACC

It's a particularly poor time for UNC to be wrapped up in NCAA violations.  The athletic department doesn't have the leverage on campus that it might have had four or five years ago.  My biggest fear is that the conversation about what makes the most sense will be driven by reactions to the scandal.  One has to think about the next 50 years with whatever decision is made.  To me, that means aligning yourself with the strongest, most stable institutions... not necessarily jumping to today's most lucrative TV contract.
