WCHL lost me when they made the horrendous decision to give Art Chansky and Bob Lee a platform on their station. In the form of a pre-game football show to boot. It blows my mind.

Someone will have to tell me if those clowns are removed from the airwaves because WCHL is now forbidden on my radio dial. 106.1 FM is miles better anyway.

High time for the Tarheels to find a real "flagship" station.

Well done Adam. It is time UNC gets serious about getting games on the radio not just WCHL. This university deserves real radio coverage.

But one of the simplest ways to promote the program once again won’t be done in 2013, and it’s solely because of the decision of one of Carolina’s alleged partners, WCHL in Chapel Hill. The station, which likes to bill itself as the “flagship of Carolina sports,” will continue its policy of refusing to air weeknight games that start before 7 p.m. (in other words, all of them). They’ll join the 6 p.m. games in progress and totally ignore some others, meaning those games will air only on the Internet, if at all.

I’ve been a part of those radio broadcasts for the past eight seasons, but won’t be on the air for 2013. That frees me up to tell you we received dozens of emails about the silly policy of failure to comprehensively cover weeknight games, and it has been directly addressed with WCHL. They maintain that they are unable to devote any of their valuable air time to Carolina baseball before 7 p.m. on weeknights.

Of course, that’s on the nights they remember the games are being played. On one occasion last season, they scheduled programming that directly conflicted with Mike Fox’s Monday night radio show—and forgot to tell Carolina’s head coach until a few hours before he was scheduled to tape the show. On multiple occasions in 2012, they cut into live broadcasts—including the Saturday game against NC State, one of the highlights of the schedule— to air various local programming that had nothing to do with Tar Heel sports.

No other supposed hometown station in the country would treat a major program that way. WCHL is happy to be the flagship station when it means involvement with Carolina basketball. They only want to be the flagship for baseball when it’s convenient for them. At an institution
that values the depth of success across the athletic department, that’s
unfortunate.

Carolina baseball deserves better than the treatment it gets from WCHL. As the program moves to make the Diamond Heels more accessible to more fans, a more committed radio partner would be an important first step.

I'm sure the reply from WCHL will be that they are the only station that carries womens hoops, plus soccer, so get off their backs. However, you can't be the "flagship station for Tar Heel athletics" only when it's convenient for you.

Explain to me how it works. Is their broacast for sports other than BB & FB just around Chapel Hill. Do other stations pick up the broadcast elsewhere?
