Early Starting Lineup Predictions?
With the #5 recruiting class on campus now (per Baseball America), and the wealth of returning pitching; some say UNC will be voted pre-season #1. Based on the Diamond Heels new roster & FWS results, any early starting lineup preditions? Appears the Closer role is still wide-open; but Matt Roberts has earned the early lead at Catcher. Here are some guesses to kick the discussion off:
LF - Frank CF - Bolt RF - Jordan (or Russell) 3B - Moran SS - Russell (or Lassiter) 2B - Zolk (or Raburn) 1B - Stubbs (or Jordan) Catcher - Roberts DH/Util - Holberton
Fri Starter - Emanuel Sat Starter - Moss Sun Starter - Hobbs J (or Munnely) Setup Man - Paula (or McCue) Closer - ??? (Hobbs J?, Paula?, McCue?, Mason M?, Munnely?, Cherry?, Porter? ...)
FR Phenom Predictions...Bolt, Lassiter, Porter, Cherry, Daly, Raburn, Dunbar, others?

RE: Early Lineup Predictions?
We will be going with the rather unconventional 5 infielders and only 2 outfielders this year

Give oo7 a break. Be happy he didn't post it in all CAPS!
He was probably thinking about popcorn and got distracted.

I'd throw in Hobbs Johnson as a weekend starter.

Not much is going to get through the hole between 3rd and short.
Also like Hobbs Johnson as a weekend starter.

Been a while since we have had to try and find a place for HITTERS in the lineup....

RE: Early Lineup Predictions?
I will take a stab at it for what its worth.
Starting rotation Fri- Emanuel Sat- Moss Sun- Johnson
After that I have no idea. Fr RHP- Porter Fr RHP- Thornton Fr RHP- Newton Fr RHP- Lowry Fr RHP- Hovis Fr RHP- Geraghty Fr LHP- Fraley Fr RHP- Cherry So RHP- Kelly So RHP- Paula So RHP- McCue So LHP- Obrien So RHP- McCullough Jr RHP- Taylor Jr LHP- Parrish Jr RHP- Smith Sr RHP- Munnelly
1B- Stubbs Porter Atwood 2B- Lassiter Zolk Raburn Campbell 3B- Moran McCain SS- Russell Lassiter
CF- Frank Sr LF- Bolt Fr RF- Jordan Jr
Massardo Fr Daly Fr Griffin So Zengel Jr
Catcher- I have no idea - Rubino a JC transfer LHH - Dunbar a highly touted recruit RHH - Roberts a JR with limited experience RHH. Dunbar Fr Roberts Jr Rubino Jr
Utility - Holberton Jr - Can catch - 2b - OF - LH DH. I count 41 so if all of these guys are on campus 6 will not be on the roster.

Knew we had number concerns... Didn't know we had a differential of 6 though!

RE: Early Lineup Predictions?
The count above is off by at least a couple. I believe the number is 39.
For comparison purposes to another school with which we are often compared on this board....they stand at 51 for the fall.....42 from high school and 9 who are transfers.

Re: Early Lineup Predictions?
Well with McCain and Griffin not in school that only puts us 4 over. If you look at several other major college programs thats well below what they are bringing into the fall. Travis mentioned the school with 51 in the fall there are several with those type of numbers entering the fall. We are well below those type of numbers and I think thats great to be honest with you.

Re: Early Lineup Predictions?
Sorry to lose Shell and Adam, but I can understand both decisions. Good Luck to both!!! I agree with the above that I am glad we are closer to the number. This is a big transition time with college baseball as the draft situation seems to have made a huge impact already. In the long run, it should provide for more stability, but after last year, don't look for us to be short any time soon.

RE: Early Starting Lineup Predictions?
why would these two just leave, both started at timers last year ,anyway best of luck but with that said the freshman seem to be the real deal.

I think you answered the first part of the question with your last statement.

Re: Early Starting Lineup Predictions?
From what I understand, it was not McCain or Griffin's decision to leave. You have to do the academic work, act in a responsible manner and abide by UNC's honor code to remain in Carolina's baseball program. Shell McCain was arrested this past summer for drug possession and I do not believe that Adam Griffin was ever "penciled in" as a starting player last fall. No player is. Personally, I do not believe our program will miss them.

Re: Early Starting Lineup Predictions?
well this makes more sense i would have showed up and made them take my spot, anyway with lassiter, russell and zolk to go along with the new comers the heels have plenty of middle infielders and with bolt or russell in right griffen would have been pushed for playing time.

Re: Early Starting Lineup Predictions?
Don't count out Raburn to quickly, the kid is a baller, 2-4 in gmae 1 vs Emanuel, he will battle you to the end

Re: Early Starting Lineup Predictions?
paula is looking like a closer to me.
Muns put on a show in game 3, making a case for a weekend starting spot, at least 9 strike outs, good command of the breaking ball, worked both sides of the plate. Stayed ahead in the count.

RE: Early Starting Lineup Predictions?

I do think Griffin was interested in testing his pitching arm, may have had something to do with it too.

RE: Early Starting Lineup Predictions?
Really bummed to see that Griffin is no longer with the team. I was always high on him and I thought he could be a starter for us in the outfield along with Frank and Bolt. Doubt we'll miss McCain much but I wish him well too.
It will be interesting to see who the last 4 players cut are.

RE: Early Starting Lineup Predictions?
is lassiter only playing ss? maybe he platoons with zolk at 2b? maybe lassiter plays ss and russell moves to lf? from the pictures and limited box scores, he seems to be a freshman worthy of a starting spot, at least in the batting order.

RE: Early Starting Lineup Predictions?
My opinion, there will be several freshmen playing a lot for us this season. Might not start right away, but these guys will see a lot of action:
Lassiter Raburn Bolt Dunbar

RE: Early Starting Lineup Predictions?
1B: Jordan 2B: Zolk/Raburn(platoon) SS: Lassiter 3B: Moran LF: Frank CF: Bolt RF: Russell C: Roberts DH: Holberton
This being said after I saw 4 FWS games. Stubbs could be a wild card. If he is hitting you may see him at 1st. Also Russell could be shortstop and that could throw Jordan to right. Too many scenarios if you ask me. Which, in my opinion, is a good problem to have..

I would think Taylor would likely have a shot as a mid-week starter.

Re: Early Starting Lineup Predictions?
Are the offensive and pitching stats posted somewhere? Usually they are and they could stimulate some debate over the line up predictions.
