RE: UNC Announces New Scoreboard At Boshamer Stadium
My understanding is that the state of NC has been very slow in approving the design and construction plans but those approvals are now in place. Since construction will have to be done from the field side with lifts/etc, I would guess now that they will wait for the conclusion of fall ball.
I have heard that UNC-W wants to purchase the old video portion of the board but Daktronics has told them that they will no longer support it so I don't know where it will end up.
I also have no idea where the LED scoring portion will go.

While walking through Costco the other day, I think I saw a screen rivaling the old scoreboard's size. ;-)

It will start very soon. The contractor has been hired, and plans are in place. They will use the existing footers and frame work, and make the changes needed to hold the extra weight.
I assure you that that the person that told me this, is in the know.
All is well!

Any truth to the rumor that WMHeel1287 is selling framed pixels from the old board once it comes down?

Re: UNC Announces New Scoreboard At Boshamer Stadium
Amazing how some posters here focus on the most irrelevant things like the score, inning, even hitter on a mock drawing!!! Unreal. And condescending remarks about two clocks. Why bother even typing critical, negative, sarcastic comments. BE POSITIVE! It is really not hard to be. Most important is Boshamer is receiving a new $650,000 video board!!! Right? Staging is taking place Friday or Monday and all material is to be delivered very soon. And all the money was fundraised as well which makes this project even better.
Looks as if the new TV stand is being completed as well.
Word has it the parking situation in the Ramshead Deck has been resolved. No more gate going up and down and a back log to get out after games!!
Seems also, from looking at the schedule, that game times have been adjusted from the past. Earlier season night games, Friday games at 7:00pm., Saturday games now at 6:00pm instead of 1pm or 2pm. So all of you that have complained about Saturday afternoon games better show! I have also heard fireworks after each Saturday game as well. There appears to be, at least at this point in time, a concerted effort to address some fan issues.

all good! it seems, however, that the biggest drawback to filling the bosh is financial, it is flat out expensive to park, attend, and eat there. how bout free parking, at least.

Re: UNC Announces New Scoreboard At Boshamer Stadium
Parking during the regular season is $5... not exactly a financial hardship, plus you only have to pay if you park in the deck. I rarely have a problem finding a free parking space within a reasonable walking distance, except for midweek afternoon games, when all of the campus lots are reserved for parking permits until 5 pm.

maybe not exactly a financial hardship but you can't deny that parking, especially paid parking, could be a deterrent. if you are trying to increase attendance and improve the whole experience, free parking would not hurt. just my two cents worth....

Re: UNC Announces New Scoreboard At Boshamer Stadium
I understand what you are saying. As I said before, the Rams Head deck is the only place where you have to pay to park... well, maybe also the NC 54 lot, but I'm not sure about that. Unfortunately the deck provides parking for multiple events, making it almost impossible to let baseball fans park there free while charging everyone else, and there is no way everyone will be allowed to park there for free.
I don't want to start trashing our fanbase here... I do enough of that on the football and basketball boards... but they are part of the problem. They complain about paying for parking, when what most are really saying is I'm to freaking lazy (or spoiled) to park a 10-15 minute walk from the stadium in a free spot. I want to park as close as possible, and I shouldn't have to pay for it.
To me, having to pay for parking is just another lame excuse people give for not attending the games. If you want to complain about concession prices, go right ahead. As for ticket prices, I'm not sure what the single game prices are this year, but you can buy a 15 game mini-season ticket that works out to just $5 or $6 per game, depending on where you want to sit. Full season tickets cost $4 or $5 per game, again depending on where you want to sit. That sounds pretty reasonable to me.

Re: UNC Announces New Scoreboard At Boshamer Stadium
i dont disagree with you. just saying that when one attends a clemson, uva, maryland, wake, stae, fsu, duke,or vt game the parking is free and the sodas are less. unc has a great, actually the best, program, field and team in the acc but possibly the worst attendance. let's fix it and maybe free, easy parking is a start. no argument with you as i have parked within walking distance of the best stadium, bosh, in the acc. if, however, you dont know the ins and outs of unc campus parking you are subjected to 5-10 bucks extra to park and walk up the hill to the stadium where you could lose your shirt for a hot dog and coke for your family of 4. that just doesn't happen at many acc venues...why at unc? i believe attendance would improve if parking was free. it certainly would not be worse! would it?

Re: UNC Announces New Scoreboard At Boshamer Stadium
You really think Bubba Cunningham has had time to pay attention to the baseball game day experience. Now that is funny. And pretty lame too. This is all coming from the baseball and marketing side I can assure you. Coach Fox is fed up (read comments from last year) about the lack of crowd support for his program. I believe he and his staff are leading this along with others. If they are successful in changing a few things (FREE PARKING IS NOT GOING TO BE ONE OF THEM!) and then fans don't show up then it is just what it is-apathy, excuses and more excuses. Really you want free parking (it is only $5!!) for an athletic event where you see future Major League players on both teams. And a fairly high percentage of wins as well. You want a $5 ticket also. And please don't compare us to Wake and State. Yes you can park free at State (I guess) but then you have to enter into that dump of a stadium and sit with your knees slammed up against the one in front of you. You get what you pay for as they say. Don't you think if they (athletics) could they would provide free parking. The dept. of public safety has control of all parking and I mean control. But please don't tell me that is why people are not coming to the games. It CANNOT AND IS NOT parking as there is ample and inexpensive all around Boshamer. Come up with some other reason please! You can buy tickets reasonable and if you think the concession prices are high (they are everywhere in the ACC!) then eat before you come. JUST GET YOUR BUTT IN THE SEAT AND ATTEMPT TO MAKE SOME NOISE AFTER YOU DO. If some of you would use the time you spend on this board to help market the program we just might have a few more fans! Seems there is an attempt to make subtle changes and enhance the game day experience. But in the end you have to want to simply attend a Carolina baseball game.

Re: UNC Announces New Scoreboard At Boshamer Stadium
that's 15 bucks for the weekend series. i believe the parking situation could be improved and also believe that parking is not the only reason the stands are not filled. i also believe that the athletic director should familiarize himself with the baseball game day experience and until he does the stands will be empty. success starts at the top. although i didn't care for your response, i like your enthusiasm. i also will continue to support unc baseball and attend as many games as i can despite the parking!

Re: UNC Announces New Scoreboard At Boshamer Stadium
Actually, it does happen at other ACC venues. A regular Coke and hot dog for 4 costs you $36 at Boshamer. To be honest, I really don't pay that much attention to the concession costs at other schools, but they are comparable. You might pay $4-6 less elsewhere, but not a significant amount. However, I think it would make sense to offer mid-week specials in an attempt to boost attendance at those games. Dollar hot dogs would be nice, but even a hot dog and drink combo for $5 would help. Of course, those specials would have to be heavily publicized to have any impact.
The free parking issue is a red herring, and IMO, has little to no impact on attendance. With the exception of the Rams Head deck, the rest of the non-reserved parking around Boshamer IS free. The problem is finding a space, but that is an issue for EVERY athletic event on campus. Again, parking in the Rams Head deck will never be free, so it does no good to complain about it. There is usually plenty of FREE parking in the Smith Center lot after 5 pm and on weekends, but that goes back to our lazy, spoiled fans not wanting to make a 10-15 minute walk from the car. Parking is also available at Ehringhaus, but then you risk the <1% chance of getting your car hit by a towering home run. Can't have that happen.
The bigger parking issue is the clusterthorp getting out of the deck, and apparently that has been addressed.
Maybe shuttles could run from the Smith Center lot to Boshamer, to help alleviate the concerns of the lazy and spoiled, but you need a significant increase in attendance to pay for that shuttle service.

Re: UNC Announces New Scoreboard At Boshamer Stadium
I think a shuttle service for the weekend and postseason games from free parking at the Smith Center is a good idea. You could charge $2 round-trip and people would come out much cheaper than parking in the deck and wouldn't have to worry about either the walk or fighting out of the deck postgame.

RE: UNC Announces New Scoreboard At Boshamer Stadium
My biggest complaint about parking is the blocking off of the Navy Field lot. I understand the Boshamer lot being closed to the public since presumably the spaces are needed for players, families, baseball coaches/staff, high-level donors, etc. But the Navy Field lot is nearly always empty during games, yet nobody is allowed to park there (except that I'll see an occasional news truck there for the big games).
It seems that reserving the Navy Field lot for season ticketholders could create more incentive to purchase, or alternatively just leave it open for first come, first served fans. Besides Boshamer, Navy Field lot is the closest and best parking to the stadium and for whatever reason nobody seems allowed to park there. Just my 2 cents.

Unfortunately, no university department could be less cooperative or intransigent than the Department of Public Safety's Parking Control Division. The answer is "no" before you even think up the question.

RE: UNC Announces New Scoreboard At Boshamer Stadium
The Navy Field lot is always going to be blocked off if there is ANY other event on campus that day (track at Eddie Smith Fieldhouse, lacrosse at Fetzer Field, women's basketball at Carmichael are a few of the examples), since that lot would be used for event operations/staff parking. They also host a number of outside tournaments at our various venues, and that could be another reason why that lot might be blocked off during a baseball game.

Jesus Christ, a shuttle from Ram Village to the Bosh? Get real. Don't be lazy. However, if there is enough demand, I will gladly tug some of yall up the hill in the back of my truck from Bowles lot for the right price. I'll have concessions and everything for sale, as well.
Reminds me of the monorail discussion on the football boards a few years back.

I'm glad to see the red numbers go too, but WMHeel's right. Back then (I hate to speak of 2001 as "back then," btw) when LEDs were appearing more and more in scoring technology as incandescent bulbs were going away, red and amber were pretty much it as far as color was concerned, and I can see how amber (yellow/orange) would get washed out in the sun.
The rendering looks good. I like the white LEDs.
