Re: Recruiting Board: Class of 2013

If we are signing guys from 2013 already, I assume unless he gets hurt, he will improve to the point of being drafted high and never making it on campus... I truly dislike baseball recruiting. Like watching a train wreck... just not strong enough to look away!

RE: Recruiting Board: Class of 2013

I certainly understand your feelings on this. But what happens when a young man this talented pops up is everyone gets on him and gets on him early. He gets offered by say a school like So Carolina. His contacts let your program know that he really wants to be a part of it and he has been offered by So Carolina. His contacts let you know he wants to get this decision out of the way because he wants to simply work on his game, have fun and take the recruiting pressure off of him early. You go and watch the kid and you see a gifted player that no doubt is a kid you want. What do you do? Let him pass and see him sign with someone else? Or lock him up and hope he shows up on campus? One things for sure if he does go to college you got him and you won't have to face him. And if he signs a pro contract great for him.

After seeing several in state studs sign with programs we later had to compete against our staff had to join this game. Its not what they want to do but what they have to do. Even if the NCAA steps in and stops early verbals its not going to go away. Players will simply make handshake agreements under the table. The thing about baseball is players tend to be very loyal to their word. You just don't see people going back on their word on either side of this. It is very rare. With the showcase baseball world getting these young players out there in front of the college coaches and the amount of exposure "Perfect Game" etc that is out there now top kids like this do not go under the radar anymore.

If this young man signs a pro contract out of hs then fine. If he does not then he will be playing for UNC. I like that scenario a lot better than if this young man does not sign a pro contract out of hs we will have to face him.

There is a young man playing in the Atlanta Metro who has been playing with the 16-under USA team whose first name is Skye. I don't recall his last name ( I know it's not King)but he is being very heavily recruited by everyone in the Southeast. His mother's best friend lives up here in Black Mountain as do I and she has told him Skye has chosen to be a Tar Heel.

Perfect Game recently expanded and reranked the 2013 class up to the top 100.

Myers came in at 78, Bigham at 83 and Orth at 97.

Interesting. I would be very very surprised if there are 96 better ball players than Orth in the country, but of course I'm biased :)

Can't wait to see him throw a couple times this year whenever I can make it home.

Re: Recruiting Board: Class of 2013

Great news to start early. Keep an eye out for a young man playing at Christ School in Asheville,N.C. name Trae Sweeting. Already offered by S.carolina and ECU. State has him on their radar. Catcher/MIF. Clocked running 60 yard dash at 6.6 with a release time from behind the plate at 1.9secs. Lead WNC HS in hitting last year as a freshman. Truly a 5 tool player. This kid can hit and run. As fast as Goodwin but a better hitter. Hope coach Fox and Jackson take a close look at him.

#NorthCarolina got a big-time commitment here lately with the addition of 2013 stud RHP Spencer Trayner. He tops around 91 MPH. #Heels #ACC

Can't understand why the Heels haven't gone after Trae Sweeting from Christ School in Arden,N.C. This kid is a five tool player. He is a catcher/OF who has been clocked at a 1.85 release time from behind the plate, ran a 6.4 60 yd dash and leads WNC in hitting. S.C, ECU and State have all offered. He is a much better athlete than Brian Goodwin was and a better student. I would love for coach Fox and assistants to check this kid out.

A much better athlete than Brian Goodwin? How much do you know about Goodwin?

I thought the same when reading it to be honest. I haven't seen the kid in question, but I've sure seen enough of Goodwin to know it's unlikely that a better athlete is out there flying the radar.

Not sure how much this tells you about him, but I thought I remembered that he pitched a shutout and hit a homerun against Kellam High School (Virginia Beach) to win the large school state championship back in May. (Lake Braddock is where Hubert Davis went to high school and their arch rival is West Springfield where Bryn Renner was a three sport star.)

I believe Dr. Hooker is a coach or former coach at Christ School. Trae is a very good player, but he's no Brian Goodwin.

If I remember correctly, the dad was one of those guys that the scouts all dream about finding. Seems like he was a little known fireballer that a couple of scouts were trying to keep under wraps as long as they could.

RE: Recruiting Board: Class of 2013

Saw my nephew who is the "volunteer" assistant at George Mason over the weekend. He was telling me that Thomas Rogers had Tommy John surgery in the past month or so. Has anyone heard this? (He would like for GMU to get involved with Thomas if the Tar Heels were to pull his scholarship offer.)

I'll have to get the name of a 2014 kid that he thinks has committed to us, but didn't see a name on our list above that looked right for what he was saying.

Does any one have a ranking of the top NC players for 2013? I'm surprised Orth is not ranked higher???

He's looking like a 1st or 2nd round pick and planning on going pro is the word everyone is saying in this area...he would look good as a Tar Heel though

RE: Recruiting Board: Class of 2013

So, forgive my inexperience, but are all 17 of these young men still committed to come to UNC? I saw that Kaminski was drafted pretty high last week. Wasn't sure about anyone else. (just saw that Bogucki was also drafted, no clue as to his decision)

And second, with only 3 seniors leaving, and Moran, Emmanuel, Holberton and Johnson being drafted, does that really mean only 7 guys on the current team leave? So what does that mean for adding this large group?

I have more experience with how the basketball and football teams handle these kind of number situations, just don't know how it's handled for the Diamond Heels. Multiple redshirts? Attrition for other reasons?

Looks like the Heels could be really loaded for next year as well if they keep most of the current roster and add this much talent.

Thanks in advance.

RE: Recruiting Board: Class of 2013

kaminsky will probably not be enrolling. Bogucky really should NOT be entertaining MLB right now as he would have a long road ahead of him to make it to the big leagues. Bogucky should not be thinking about jumping. He should come to UNC and learn and mature and bolster his draft status.
