RE: this past weekend's scrimmages
Here is my two cents. There is definitely some talent out there. There is competition at every position. I think we will be just fine. There is much more speed than we are accustomed to seeing. It should be a very fun season. We will be good!!!

RE: this past weekend's scrimmages
I worry by nature but I am noticing a lot of hits and runs being scored in the scrimmages. Should I be worried about the pitching or excited about the hitting. Also, the defense seems to be doing well as there are not a lot of errors being reported.

RE: this past weekend's scrimmages
The Saturday scrimmage saw few hits and runs scored. However, this time of year, the batters tend to have an advantage. Why? Because by this time, the pitchers have had to face the batters in 25 Fall scrimmages and all of those that they've had since the beginning of the current practice period. That creates a lot of familiarity that plays into the hitters' hands.
Believe me. By now, our pitchers are more-than-ready to throw against batters wearing someone else's uniform. When that's the case, it should be a very different story.

Also keep in mind they don't pitch these kinds of things to maximize effectiveness of the pitching. Often they put kids in tough situations on purpose or even start innings with runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs just to see how they react to certain situations.

Emanuel and Moss threw Saturday..Not too many teams going to put up many runs and hits against them. When the staff puts the 9 guys on the field they think deserve to be there, we will be as good and talented as any team out there from top to bottom!!!

Little tougher on pitchers in cooler weather also.

Spot on. Can't fool the batters but for so long.

Re: this past weekend's scrimmages
Something else to remember about the pitching in the scrimmages is that these games are still practice. Pitchers will often find themselves in certain situations and throw pitches they are working on. For instance, one pitcher's best pitch might be a fastball but he might throw a 3-2 off speed pitch. He'll need that pitch at some point in the spring. To piggyback on what WM said earlier, in addition to starting runners on certain bases, the coaches may also assign the hitter a count. They might give the hitter a 1-0 count or even an 0-1 count (just to test the hitter). These games are great laboratories for pitcher's (and hitters for that matter) to get comfortable with situations they will face later this season. The results will not always corellate to results when the games count.

We also have more size than I can remember a UNC team having. We have some really good size guys, hopefully, meaning more power.

I remember a few years back when GT was at the Bosh...I remember thinking how much bigger their guys were than ours...it would be nice to have a couple more bigguns on our side

Re: this past weekend's scrimmages
We have always been a small ball team, stroking doubles and aggressive base running along with strong pitching.

Re: this past weekend's scrimmages
The bbcor bat has affected the game greatly. All you have to do is look at the appreciably lower number of home runs hit in the NCAA statistics since the bat's introduction to see it. As a result, there's a premium placed on speed and hitting for average compared to pre-bbcor seasons.
That's not to say that it's not nice to have some power in your lineup; but, the bat has lessened power hitters' impact.
