Question about a prospect?

Question about a prospect?

Everyone,

Last night I attended the Bunn HS vs. Rocky Mount Senior High game, and I saw one of the most impressive HS kicking game ever. I attend many games each year, saw the Barths, Glarmis, etc. some of the greats, and this kid was flat impressive. I missed part of the game while escorting my pregnant wife back to the car, but Bunn's kicker was perfect. He went 3 for three on FGs, had zero return yards against (all were through the back of the end zone), and made all of his extra points. He iced the game in the 4th with a 52 yarder that could have been from close to 60. I hope Fedora is looking at this kid, but with J. Alston there I am sure he is. He has not shown up on any sites, but does anyone know anything about this gentleman?

Re: Question about a prospect? Freeman Jones, K, 2014

Thanks for coming. That was an excellent season opener for Bunn. That 48 yd FG is reported to be the new school record in his first game as a junior!

His name is Freeman Jones, class of 2014. The highlight video from the game you saw is up on his youtube channel search FreemanJones80, Bunn at Rocky Mount. He trains regularly with UNC kick master Dan Orner. Traveled over 14,000 miles this year alone to hone his skill including summer camps at UNC, NCSU, Duke, and UVA. Journeyed to Atlanta, LA and Vegas to compete in 2012. Accomplished kicker/placekicker, punt game improving. All Conference Player in soccer for Bunn 2 years running, now devoted strictly to football.

Some of his merits include: National Event Kickoff Champion Class of 2014 in Las Vegas Jan 2012; KO and overall Camp Champion in Charlotte July 2012; held the #1 spot on both Chris Sailer and Kohls for the month of July 2012; currently #2 with Sailer and #5 with Kohls nationally out of 140+ rated kickers. Here are a few resources:

nationalcampseries.com/profile...2&eventid=1

www.chrissailerkicking.com/pla...yerProfile.html

kohlskicking.com/profile/freeman-jones/6364/

Come support Bunn and see Jones in action this Thursday at 7 pm (not Friday) at home vs. Southern Nash. Game moved up for the holiday. Sept 7 is a bye week, then Bunn hosts N Johnston on Sept. 14.

Rumor has it that UNC is high on his list of preferred colleges.

That's some GREAT info there Dad. Best of luck to your son and a very wise career choice. The kickers can play for decades and always have the lowest handicaps with the free time.

RE: Question about a prospect?

An ineligible player was used. This was self reported by Bunn head coach Chris Miller. He accepts full responsibility. An honorable action after an unfortunate oversight. Player in question had not attended enough practice.

Gametime at Bunn is 7 pm tonight. 2a Bunn takes on another 3a Southern Nash. Should be a tough one for the Wildcats. I expect a full house.

Thanks to everyone for their support and encouragement for Freeman.

He's one of four Juniors in the nation on the watchlist.

Yeah, my thoughts too. We probably aren't in the market for scholarship punters and kickers in the class of 2013 and probably not for 2014 either. I am not a big fan of giving kickers/punters scholarship when we are at 85, much less at 80. That being said, it doesn't matter what I think and if the kid wanted to be a preferred walk-on and not have a scholarship until his sophomore year like Casey Barth...or play soccer ONLY until his junior year (like others have done in the past), I can't imagine there would be much of a problem from the staff if he is a good kid and a good player (and he appears to be good).

There might not be a problem anyhow if he truly is elite. Truly elite kickers are worth a scholarship, but we all have different definitions for what "elite" means. There are only a half dozen or so kickers in the entire nation who are truly elite (IMO) and some of those guys don't become elite until they GET to college and learn how to kick which makes HS evaluations pretty pointless. My point is that it's hard to tell if a HS kid is an elite kicker at this point in his career. Judging by Casey Barth's HS stats, I would have thought that he would have been elite, but I don't think he was (at least not when he was a freshman).

RE: Question about a prospect?

Pretty cool honor as a JR. I see they listed Wogan at Porter Ridge as well.

UNC has had a great history for kickers but it is rarely talked about. Would love for us to combine a special talent at kicking with a team that can back it up.

Class move by the Bunn coach. Character counts.

first thing lane kiffen did after the ship reductions at usc was to offer a long snapper, punter and kicker. He knew he was going to be in some tight games with the ship reductions and offered three positions that USC usually holds over for walk ons.

Seems like a smart move by lane.

Hope we can think outside the box.

Hope we show interest soon.

I had to question one thing, though. Gliarmis - one of the greats?
He stayed in Teague with us and we had a guy on our top intramural team that was better.

RE: Question about a prospect?

I am not sure, but I know USC was winning 11 or 12 games per season before they went on probabtion (sic). And I don't know if you are suggesting that Kiffen is the only one who knows how to allocate scholarships in times of scholarship reductions but there are plenty of coaches who DON'T do this. Fedora is one of them.

The logic that "because we have fewer scholarships, we should invest those fewer scholarships in positions (such as punter, kicker, and deep snapper) that are crucial in close games" is ridiculous. Why not a scholarship for the holder too?

Also, with fewer scholarships, it stands to reason that creative means must be used to make up for the loss of depth and that depth at offensive and defensive positions would be magnified, not de-emphasized which is what is implied if you are suggesting that having kickers and punters on scholarship is more important than having 2nd team TE's and LB's on scholarship. Walkons are much more easily found at kicker and punter positions than MLB or OG. At least that's my opinion. I have NO idea why he wouldn't have used those spots "that he normally would hold over for walkons" for walkons.

Dumb move by lane.

RE: Question about a prospect?

Forget Bunn UNC better start looking at Southern Nash they have some good athletes there also.
They absolutely killed Bunn and Roanoke Rapids by three or four touch downs . Both Alston and Jones where kept in check. And they have a offensive tackle committed to play for Wake Forest. NC State has recruited SN hard and I don't see why UNC hasn't. By the way thats where J Peppers played high school ball at.

RE: Question about a prospect?

Yeah, 3a S Nash kept 2a Bunn and Roanoke Rapids from getting in a groove. These are 2 of the better teams in the NCC. Nash has a great squad. Good luck to them in their conference.

Not sure how S Nash kept Jones in check though. He was perfect when he got the ball. 3 for 3 touchbacks, no returns. 2 for 2 PAT, one was a 22 yarder after the penalty.

IMO when Bunn was done by 16 late in the game going for it on a 4th and 6 in FG range (which is anything under 55 for Jones) was a turning point. Bunn doesn't convert, and Nash takes over on their 36 and drives for the TD. Give Jones the opportunity, get 3, and another TB. Points and field advantage when you need 3 scores anyway. Bunn had a hard time slowing Nash down so it may not have mattered but put your kicker to work for you!

We'll see how Bunn does in its first conference match tonight at home hosting N Johnston.

Jones hit 10 of 11 KO for TB tonight in the 69-0 blowout over N Johnston. One of them went clean through the uprights. 9 of 9 PAT including a 42 yarder after a penalty. Pregame warmup 10 of 10 FG good out to 55+ yards. Now 23 of 24 KO for TB when kicking from his 40 with an average over 68 yds.

Footage will be up on youtube tomorrow, channel freemanjones80. Thanks for looking.

I went to Louisburg High(Class of 98). Louisburg/Bunn is a fueled rivalry. I have lost touch with how my high school does in sports as of late. I've heard the rivalry isn't what it used to be. When i was in school and before, it was fierce every year. I played 2 years for Louisburg (95-96). I did go to our opener vs Souther Vance. Boy do we suck!!!! LOL!! I'd love to coach Louisburg High some day.

This is great for Franklin County and i hope this kid goes to Carolina!!!! Nice work Freeman

feardafoot:

Don't know how it was then, but I can tell you the kids at both Bunn and Louisburg look forward to this matchup every year. It is Bunn's biggest rival even if its not the best team they play. Also our last regular season game this year on Otcober 26 at Louisburg, come see how the atmosphere compares to the 90's. Maybe da Boot can get some reps in for you.

Agreed for Franklin Co and smaller conferences in general getting some press as it is typically dominated by larger programs. Our Head Coach Miller was a QB for Bunn in the early 90's. Hope you can get on board at Louisburg Mr Foot.

As for the choice of college, it is his not ours. We'll be looking for a good fit scholastically as well as athletically. (I could wear that lighter shade of blue.) Thanks for your support.

Kudos to you and your son! As a college prof over the last 15 years, I've had the distinct privilege of teaching numerous graduates of Bunn High School. I realize that generalizations are dangerous, but as a rule the young men and women that I've taught from Bunn have been at least a notch above other students in terms of overall character, friendliness, politeness, willingness to work, etc. Somebody at BHS (and in their homes) is doing their job and doing it well! I have never had a bad experience in the classroom with a Bunn student. What's in the water there?

I hope we can persuade this young man to come to Carolina. Past Bunn stars have gone to WFU, State, Notre Dame, Air Force, etc. It's our turn.

Seriously, it's quite impressive. I've been visiting local churches in Wake Forest before back when Howle was coach, and he'd have the whole football team with him wearing ties, sitting attentively, and behaving. And no offense to our other Franklin Co. neighbors, because I've also met some fine people from Louisburg and "Frank-el-ton" but they're not nearly as consistent as the Bunn folks.

In a rain shortened game, Bunn wins 36-0 at its homecoming. Excellent pregame parade and spaghetti dinner at the fire dept as always. Fortunately the storms held off until halftime.

Jones connects on a 43 yd FG, 3 for 3 PAT, and 4 KO for touchbacks with another through the uprights. He drove one KO from his own 25 to the goal line after the Bunn penalty on the prior PAT. Homecoming vs Warren Co video up here:

In the much anticipated conference matchup, Bunn Defeats Franklinton at home 45-8. Just 3 games left in the regular season: @Corinth Holders Oct.12, NW Halifax October 19, and @ Louisburg Oct. 26.

Kicking prospect Freeman Jones had another good night with 6 for 6 PAT, a 32 yd FG, and 7 out of 8 KO for touchbacks. Several of the KO were at or near 70 yds. A few scouts on hand to witness his strength and form.

See it here, thanks for looking:

Awesome. Careful with holders, they found their offense against Louisburg last week sheeesh!!!!! Our boys couldn't tackle anything. They will line it up 4 and 5 wide and throw it. I am definately going to the Bunn/Louisburg game. I will have to come over to the Bunn sideline and give you a handshake

I hope our staff is all over this. I have never understood FB minds that feel FG kicking is a dispensable skill. I can't tell you how envious I was of FSU when Janikowski was there. We all knew if FSU got much beyond the 50 yd line, it was an automatic 3 pts., at the least.
