I know height isn't everything, but 6'0/250 seems short to me for a BCS-caliber lineman. For all I know, this kid could be the next Jeff Saturday, but those guys are few and far between.

Dwight Freeney is 6'1 and runs a 4.5 forty. He was an under-recruited kid from Hartford who went to Syracuse and over-performed. Gets drafted 11th overall by Indianapolis and becomes a Colts legend.

I'm not prepared to say that this kid won't be anything because there are always cases like Freeney and Saturday and Mike Patterson and any other undersized kid who makes it….but the odds are simply not in his favor. I'm happy to take a waiver on a kid like this if I'm a coach, but it has to be as low-risk as possible, which is almost certainly a preferred walk-on slot at best ESPECIALLY with the scholarship reductions.

Will Grier has committed to Florida, according to his Twitter account.

The announcement is hardly a surprise. The junior quarterback from Davidson (N.C.) Day had long expressed strong interest in the school and took several visits to Gainesville.

Grier said from his Twitter account: "I am committed to the university of Florida!! If you ain't a gator your gator bait!! #Gators #chompchomp #SWAMPLIFE"

Grier told ESPN earlier this week that he was also considering North Carolina, North Carolina State and Tennessee. The ESPN Watch List prospect became Florida's third commitment for 2014.

As a junior, Grier threw for 5,785 yards and 69 touchdowns with six interceptions. He also rushed for 813 yards and another
eight touchdowns. He completed 78 percent of his passes

Expected. UNC has already offered other quarterbacks in this class and will still look to take one commitment at that position for the 2014 class.

Re: 2014 Recruiting Updates

I don't think this is true at all. Remember reading very early on that he favored UF. Oddly, they have not recruited particularly well at QB. Great program with a need at QB greater than here. Unfortunately, an easy choice for him Losing Blasevich makes less sense as we use TE well and he would only have to sit one year. Hood, who looked good, no longer favors us. Not terribly impressed so far with Fedora's efforts to close the state borders. Long way to go of course and we'll see what happens this next year, but early signs are not encouraging. Shaping up right now to be another year where we lose the vast majority of the top 10.

Re: 2014 Recruiting Updates

Do we really want or need to waste a scholly on someone at a position that isnt really a need? We will have Williams, Trubisky, and Coker. That is 3 really good QB's in which I think anyone could start. I would rather see us start beefing up on the defensive side of the ball. I would rather have 4 or 5 quality backup's at safety or CB than I would QB.

Re: 2014 Recruiting Updates

That's a good way to look at it. Maybe we aren't going after any QB's in 2015 but we are surely after 1 if not 2 in the 2014 class. We would have Marquise, Coker, Trubisky, Summers and whoever we get in 2014. Quise would be eligible for the draft after next season so that leaves us with 3 QB's, if you know where I am coming from. I guess Coach wants to keep 4 or 5 QB's. I am not an expert nor former football coach but that's how I view it.

Re: 2014 Recruiting Updates

Damn dude. It took Mack years to close down the borders. Fedora isn't going to do it over night, and you have to take into account player depth. QB being one, and TE being another in that we only use one each. We have Tabb, Ebron, Fitzpatrick, and Knox. Hood obviously has favored ND for a while, and with them competing for the NC, going to be hard to get a commitment from him. You seem like a sour grapes type who all too easily point out the negative, trying to break someone down just for the sake of it. Granted, Fedora did make the statement, so he does need to live up to it, but don't expect over night success. It is going to take several years to build up the quality wins to go along with the relationships he's building to get kids more excited about representing Carolina Blue. That takes years, not days and weeks. Be realistic.

You seem also to not being paying attention to the fact the three of the top 10 players in next year's entire recruiting class have a very favorable view of UNC right now and we have a legitimate shot at each of them. I'm sure you are aware of who they are, so I won't mention their names.

sbm, while I certainly agree with your premise I have to agree with Fedoramases - these kinds of things take time…ESPECIALLY with scholarship reductions and installing a new system. Fedora has lofty goals, and we all hope that he achieves them while he's at Carolina, but expecting to shut out everyone from the state of North Carolina in recruiting only one year into the job is a little harsh.

Not making anything up just passing on premium information from another site that said our QB depth and his girl friend going to Florida had a part in his decision. I'm not saying that was the main reason he chose Florida but I do believe it played a big part. I think if Florida would have had our QB depth and his girl friend was at Chapel Hill Grier would be in Carolina blue.

I know this is the blind leading the blind, but what the heck? I am betting the top 10 list of NC kids in the 2014 class will largely be composed of the following guys: Berrios, Blazevich, Featherston, Grier, Hood, Lloyd, Register, Scott, Spain, and Thompson. We know Blazevich and Grier are gone. I think getting three of them would be terrific but kind of doubt it ends up that way. How many of you think we will get at least three of the remaining eight? BTW I bet we get McClendon, Edwards and Dinkins who I think will all be in the next 5.

I'm betting 5-6 every year, beginning with 2015. One of the intersting things making recruiting in NC less predictable is the large number of good players, especially around Charlotte, with ties elswewhere.

Re: 2014 Recruiting Updates

Are we losing ground? Where do we stand with Mr. Pugh?

insider.espn.go.com/blog/ncfrecruiting/southeast/
Jacob Pugh (Tallahassee, Fla./Godby) had every right to celebrate.

Gobdy High School won its first state championship in about a quarter century by the slimmest of margins. Immokalee, on the verge of a comeback, missed what would have been the game-tying extra point, allowing the Cougars to outlast their opponent.

In the coming months, Pugh will probably be happy about his recruiting accomplishments, too. A good group of schools have already offered to the junior outside linebacker and more could be on the way.

"North Carolina, Alabama, LSU, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vanderbilt -- a lot of them," Pugh said.

"Alabama hasn't offered me, but all the other schools have."

The Crimson Tide definitely has Pugh's attention. If they call, he would have to listen.

"It is a good college," Pugh said. "They have good education and I love that coaching staff. They love winning national championships. They have a tradition of winning national championships, at least SEC championships."

Florida State, another program that hasn't yet offered but appears to be on the verge, has a tie to Pugh besides his home town. Related to Seminoles running back Chris Thompson, Pugh has a unique connection to FSU.

But his primary recruiter from FSU is now the head coach of Kentucky.

"I was hearing from Coach [Mark] Stoops, but he left," he said. "I haven't heard from them since."

Pugh mentioned SEC rivals Auburn and Georgia as schools he would like to hear from in the future.

Re: 2014 Recruiting Updates

I don't see this guys name on the recruiting board. His name is Vic Wharton III but he claims an offer from us. Where we after this guy?

A coaching change has put Tennessee firmly in the race for Vic Wharton III.

The Volunteers new coaching staff under Butch Jones offered the ESPN Watch List junior a scholarship on Friday. Jones and his staff already knew Wharton III well. They recruited him aggressively at Cincinnati before being hired by Tennessee earlier this month.

"I love Coach Jones," Wharton said. "Their staff was a reason why Cincy was one of my top schools."

Wharton has scholarship offers from several schools, most notably Mississippi State, North Carolina, Ole Miss, Purdue, Vanderbilt and Wake Forest.

He is on the radar under the cornerbacks. I believe he was shown as having an offer for a while but apparently he does not have a commitable offer now.

Getting S Quin Blanding and DT Andrew Brown with a possibility of #1 Overall Player DE DaShawn Hand will more than make up for not getting some of the N.C. guys!!!!!!
