It's hard to say how many more of those guys we will get because we are so limited with scholarships to give out next year. As of right now I think we can give out 6 more scholarships so my question is how many more do you guys think will be available before next year? I would guess maybe 10 or 11 if some of the graduated seniors transfer for playing time or decide they have had enough football. We also might lose some guys early for the draft which I hope we don't.

---------------------------------------------

Right now UNC is at 79 scholarship players for 2012.

In 2013, minus the commitments UNC currently has (including today's pickup of Desmond Lawrence), UNC will have 65 scholarship players. That leaves for a class of about 15 people, give or take a few for attrition.

Right now, UNC's class has 8 recruits in it for 2013. That would mean that UNC is still looking for 7 (give or take) to fill out their class. My guess is they'll go for 20 and make it work.

A 20 commit class would be great if it all worked out. I would really love to see some of the top instate guys give us a commitment and start recruiting for us. I think getting big name players to commit early and recruit for you is huge in recruiting.

this spring we only lost 2 players, right? The kicker and Josh Adams (i assume his scholarship is no longer counted against the team). The "waiver wire" would really need to heat up big time for us to to have room for a 20 person recruiting class, even if we delay all the penalty stuff by a yr

Well, there won't be any delays, so you can throw that possibility out the window.

I'm not saying that 20 is the number; I'm saying they'll shoot for that and see what happens. If it makes you feel better, I think the real number will probably be 18.

Don't get caught up on this now, though. It's only April; a LOT can change between now and one year from now. These numbers are so fungible right now that to put anything in stone is an exercise in futility.

South Carolina leads for Connor Mitch and he expects to make a decision pretty soon. Hopefully coach Fedora can change his mind before he decides. I don't think quarterback is a huge need this year but I think Mitch could be a real good one in a couple of years.

QB would be somewhat of a luxury in this class. There are going to be at least 5 QBs on the roster this summer (4 scholarship, 1 walk-on), and there may even be another walk-on added. Mitch is probably the only QB that UNC is really going after with a scholarship that is seriously considering committing, so if he doesn't come I'm not sure that I would really expect UNC to take a QB in this class.

Normally, I would be opposed to this since I'm nearly always in favor of taking at least 1 QB per recruiting class, but I think this could be an exception.

Re: 2013 Recruiting Updates

There are strong indications following the Spring Game that Marquez North and Tyquan Lewis are leaning towards Carolina, and may have been for some time. Hopefully the game sealed the deal for these guys and they can commit to a program ready to break out in the next year or so…and recruit all their friends to be a part of the #NCDreamTeam.

With more and more offers out there for 2014 kids, I can go ahead and start one. Typically I don't really get into starting them until around NSD, but if there are a bunch of offers out there for 2014 kids (as it seems there are), then we can keep them separate.

Re: 2013 Recruiting Updates

Is it possible to do too well, too soon in recruiting? Not saying we are; I really wouldn't have a handle on that.

But can other schools e.g. Wake Forest/State which admittedly don't have the initial appeal for football that we do, be just sitting back and figuring that early commitments are often players who feel fortunate to get a UNC offer vs kids who have a tough decision among a half dozen or more quality programs whom they might get and then can always fall back on 2 and 3 stars who they are recruiting but haven't offered.

Re: 2013 Recruiting Updates

I think you could fall back on some 2 star recruits but most three star recruits and up have offers from a lot of big time schools. So if you get in late with them you are probably going to be on the outside looking in unless you are a major football power like Alabama or something.

If you wanna look at it this way, no one does well in recruiting until National Signing Day.

But there are competing philosophies with recruiting. The Mack Brown Texas model is one that I think a LOT of people are enamored with, but it's very hard to do; basically, you spend your entire recruiting period keeping your class together after getting 15-20 commitments at Junior Day. Keeping them committed is the hard part, but getting them to commit early is a luxury that few schools currently enjoy.

The other philosophy is the one that most schools actually subscribe to - go after the big fish early and often, then fill in the gaps with smaller fish as necessary. Oftentimes, this means there is a flurry of activity from January to NSD and no program bats 1.000 on all the big-time guys; there are a few exceptions to this (Florida in 2010, Miami in 2007), but most of the time schools spend a lot of time building a rapport with the elite prospects in hopes of getting them to sign.

The bottom line is this - there is no early or late "winner" in recruiting; however you can get the players you want to come to school (and it's within NCAA rules) then that's what you do.

Everytime I look at the breakdown of how many open scholarships we have left I get pissed. It really sucks for the next three years we are limited to the ammount of scholarships we can hand out by 5 a year. I guess I need to be more like coach Fedora and stay positive but I wish some guys would have made better decisions and our current team and coaches wouldn't have to pay for their mistakes.

hey, karma AND NCAA rules can be a ******. Got to pay when you get caught, not when you did misdeeds. If Fed is the right guy, it will work out. Might even be some trimming down of dead wood in the fan base. Doubt some will be missed.

He was never really interested, despite multiple communications by Fedora and the recruiting staff. Some people just don't want to go to UNC.

Good luck to him.

are you guys recruiting 6'5 240 TE Marcus McNeil? top 5 TE in the nation from NC who runs in the low 4.6 only been playing football for less then a year. just woundering because he wants to go to Ohio St bad but doesnt have an offer, but that might change at the end of the month

RE: 2013 Recruiting Updates

We haven't given him an offer either according to our recruiting board and probably wont with our scholarship reductions. He looks like a good player but we have 4 tightends on scholarship and all of them will be back for next year so I don't think we have room for McNeil. That could change if we start missing on other targets and we think we will have room.
