Jones is a good coach, and Tennessee will be solid in a couple of years in a very tough SEC. Fedora is a good coach, and UNC will be good this year in a slightly below average ACC.

It's a tough call; I don't blame him for being conflicted.

Re: 2013 Recruiting Updates

No sure if we have a chance with Adams but we are recruiting him the hardest and may get the last spot for an official visit before he signs on Feb 6th.

Five-star DT Adams sets 4 officials

With his football season wrapped up, five-star defensive tackle Montravius Adams (Vienna, Ga./Dooly Co.) is now set to focus on his recruitment. Adams has yet to formally narrow down his list of teams, but today he announced he had set up four of his official visits, with two programs fighting for his fifth and final spot.

“I am taking an official to Florida immediately after the Under Armour Game, then Clemson, Jan. 11, Alabama, Jan. 18, and to Georgia on Jan. 25,” Adams said. “I might take a fifth official to UNC or Ole Miss.”

Last weekend at the Georgia Dome, Adams and his teammates played ECI for the GHSA A class (public) state championship. Several college coaches were on the sidelines to watch Adams and others play, but the No. 7 prospect in the country only recalls talking to one school.

“I only remember talking to Coach [Rodney] Garner from Georgia, and he told me about the style of offense ECI plays and how he hates going up against Georgia Tech and Georgia Southern because every year he will have a defensive lineman get hurt in that game,” Adams said. “I went down in the game and I was thinking he was right. I know Coach Garner talked to my mom, too, and she likes him.”

The in-state Bulldogs are hoping to keep Adams from leaving Georgia, and one aspect of the school that appeals to the 6-foot-3, 300-pound lineman is the likelihood of the Georgia coaching staff staying intact while he is in college.

Zach Perry/Intersport
Five-star DT Montravius Adams said this week the stability of UGA's staff is a plus for the Bulldogs in his recruitment.
“Georgia is my hometown team,” Adams said. “I love the coaches there like Coach Garner and Coach [Mark] Richt. One thing I also like about Georgia is their coaches are not likely to leave. The coaches at Auburn are gone, and coaches have left some of my other schools, but at Georgia they have stability so that means something. They also have a great education and it is just a good place to be. My mom likes them.”

Last Thursday, Adams was visited by three coaches representing Alabama at the time: defensive line coach Chris Rumph, recruiter of record Jeremy Pruitt and head coach Nick Saban. Pruitt has since left Alabama for the defensive coordinator position at Florida State.

“It was cool having Coach Saban there,” Adams said. “I do not know what they told my mom, because I saw them at my school, but their message to me was they want to get me on campus and that I would not play nose. I would play out at defensive end to the three-technique. Alabama has a great business program with coaches that get their players in the league.”

Adams was also visited Thursday by Clemson offensive line coach and recruiter of record Robbie Caldwell, along with defensive tackles coach Dan Brooks. The Tigers got a solid head start with the elite defensive tackle by offering him more than six months before any other program.

“I like just about everything about Clemson,” Adams said. “They were my first offer and most people fall in love with their first school. That is why I like them a lot, but also every time I visit is different, but still family-based.”

Gators defensive coordinator Dan Quinn visited Adams last Tuesday at his team’s practice. Florida made a big impression on the No. 1 defensive tackle in the country during his trip to Gainesville, Fla.

“When I visited Florida, I loved it,” Adams said. “That visit has stuck with me since then. I also know I would be coached by a Hall of Famer in Bryant Young, [who] just came out of the NFL a few years ago. He has already done many of the things I want to accomplish."

Adams points out that the school recruiting him the hardest is not one of the four programs to which he has planned an official visit.

“North Carolina is recruiting me the hardest, and if I take a fifth official, it will either be there or Ole Miss,” he said.

As for his decision, Adams pointed out that the possibility remains that his recruitment will last until Feb. 6.

"I will probably make my decision on signing day, and I will pick the school where I feel the most at home and where I could see myself for the next four years," Adams said.

Re: 2013 Recruiting Updates

Other coaches are more than likely stroking his ego with early playing time talk, offering him by word an easier path to the starting line up. Fedora, knowing him, probably isn't filling North up with a bunch of flowery BS like that and just offering him a chance to be part of something special letting his talent and work ethic decide his fate and trusting the best of the best make the starting line up, and that he should be one of those.

Fact is, if North is worried he can't make the starting line up at UNC, what makes him think he can make it to the pro level? This is just coaches putting crap in his ear more than likely telling him what he wants to hear, confusing him, rather than what he needs to hear. He's a smart kid, he'll get it worked out. He just needs some guidance right now and perhaps a little space to allow himself to think it out.

One thing is for sure. Someone who is courageous enough to tell you what you need to hear vs someone who simply tells you what you want to hear is someone you can better trust.

Tennessee is sweating North because they are losing a 3 star receiver to Alabama.

ESPN 300 wide receiver Camion Patrick (Lenoir City, Tenn.) and three-star outside linebacker Zach Barnes (Loganville, Ga./Grayson) are no longer committed to Tennessee, multiple sources report.

Patrick, who committed in January, holds offers from Alabama, Arkansas and Ole Miss, while Furman, Indiana and Southern Miss have offered Barnes.

Tennessee has now lost five commitments for the Class of 2013 after the firing of Derek Dooley.

I think the playing time thing is hearsay right now; unless someone has a legitimate report that says North is concerned about the playing time he'll receive at UNC, I seriously question that notion - particularly given the success of Quinshad Davis this year, the offensive scheme UNC runs with at least 3 receivers on the field 90% of the time, and North's natural ability.

Your point about stroking egos is well-taken though. The recruiting process is a sales pitch, nothing more; people who shrink from that description simply don't want to know the truth - that coaches are in living rooms across America today telling kids, parents, and high school coaches that their star would be best wearing their respective schools' colors on Saturdays, and here's what their schools can "offer" that recruit, be it within NCAA guidelines or otherwise. What each recruit - particularly the highly-pursued like North - must decide is what school puts them in the best place to succeed on and off the field, during and after their college careers; each recruit is different, with different values and priorities, and as a result choose different schools. A good recruiter manages those values and priorities and fits them to their school. If UNC's coaches can hit home with North better than any other coach, convincing him that UNC's priorities and goals for his career match up with what North wants, then that's where he'll end up, and the same goes for Butch Jones at Tennessee.

MarQuez North
School -- Charlotte (N.C.) Mallard Creek
Position -- Receiver

The latest -- It was a huge Monday when Clemson flipped four-star receiver Demarcus Robinson back from Florida. That said, neither school thinks that recruitment is over. Either way, Clemson would love to have the 6-feet-4, 212-pound North in the class. North Carolina and Tennessee are the main contenders, and the Norths are looking into which school provides the best chance for early playing time. One thing in Clemson's favor is that three of its top receivers likely will depart after the 2013 season. North is supposed to visit Clemson on Jan. 11. If that happens, the odds of landing him go up. Right now, though, the arrow is pointing slightly toward Knoxville, Tenn.

Clemson commit confidence -- 35%

He likes UNC and feels comfortable here, it's just other coaches are filling his head with a bunch of crap and confusing him which is making it hard for him to be firm in his decision to commit solid to UNC right now. Given a little more time, and getting here on campus for an OV should go a long way to helping him sort all that other nonsense out.

Can't disagree in any way. This if Fedora's job. He has talked about closing the NC borders. He has to be able to sell UNC to the Norths or he will never close those borders or recruit to the level he needs to be successful at UNC. Landing North is a big deal IMO. If you believe 247 we appear to be losing that battle right now. This is not one we should lose.

The playing time line is complete nonsense. Here are the numbers for WR commits for the last three years: UNC--7 total, 6 3* and 1 2*. Six between 2012 and 2013. CL-- 10 total, 8 4*+, 1 3* and 1 2*. Six between 12 and 13, five of whom are 4* players. TN-- 10 total, 4 4*+, 6 3* and 1 2*. Seven between 12 and 13, two of whom are 4*+ players. If North is as good as advertised, he will start every year he is here. This is about who is the better recruiter.

Re: 2013 Recruiting Updates

We aren't necessarily losing the battle with North right now. UNC is still the slight favorite, it's just he is making sure of himself before he decides where to make his commitment. It's always going to be like this with Tennessee (and other SEC schools), especially now since Thigpen is coaching there who is a great recruiter with NC ties. You aren't going to get every recruit to stay more than likely. Some are going to end up going elsewhere. Getting North would be a big win for UNC, but it wouldn't be the end of it all if we didn't. We have made great strides this year with the class as it stands now. And, just to add, we have the AP NC Player of the Year as a firm UNC commitment in T.J. Logan. So, while we still have work to do, our stance within the state is much better now than it was last year. It should get better, but don't expect every player in the top 10 every year to decide on UNC. Would be nice, and you have to try, but you just can't expect it realistically.

Which is why it is just other coaches putting crap in his ear. And, as far as who is the better recruiter...not sure that holds water really. Don't underestimate the allure of those three letters Tennessee has attached to it in regards to it's conference affiliation.

I hope you are not going to try to make the case that Fedora is not a good recruiter if we end up losing North to Tennessee. That is ridiculous imho.

I think getting between 3 and 5 of the Top 10 in N.C. is about the Best we can expect. As almost always with numbers, there will be variances, so some years we may only get 1 or 2 while in other years we may get 6 or 7!!!!!!

I by no means expect UNC to get them all, but it should do better than it has done. As intoxicating as SEC might be to a kid, it does not seem to have hurt Clemson or FSU. I understand their history, but the SEC allure can be given too much emphasis, particularly when we lose out. It cannot be an excuse. North is a guy we should land. I do think it will reflect poorly on Fedora if we do not. Clearly not the end of the world but a loss without question if he fails. There are the guys who clearly have no interest in UNC and there are the guys who are truly open to UNC. We lost Crowder. Losing North would in my opinion raise slight questions about Fedora's ability to live up to the hype.

You should check the class rankings before making a statement like this. "We lost Crowder" ... so did every other team that recruited him except one. Same goes for North. There is fierce competition for the best recruits. Fedora has got some great commits, especially considering he is working under sanctions. Get real.

Yeah. I've read that which is good. UNC, and UNC fans feel comfortable with him too. Want him here bad. Now, the staff just has to reassure him of his chances of earning quality playing time early on here are high. You can't make false promises though. You have to shoot straight and say all you are going to 'given' is the chance, but given your ability, I like your chances.

Hopefully he chooses UNC because with Renner throwing to him in Fedora's system next year and with other teams having to worry about Davis on the other side, it is going to open up allot of opportunities for him on his side to make allot of catches.

Having more than a few good receivers is what you really want and how every one thrives. You can't double cover everybody, and if you have to go zone to make up for it you are going to get picked a part in a system like Fedora's.

North looks like he'd be ready to shine immediately, but in the long-run a stud DT or 5* cornerback would be more important to this class. We have lots of good pass-catchers coming in:

Jonathon Howard
Jordan Fellasomtpin
Ryan Switzer
TJ Logan

Thorpe and Quinshad will only be sophomores next yr. Tapley and Reggie Wilkins as juniors are the only upper classmen...

Re: 2013 Recruiting Updates

Nonsense. Most kids seriously consider about three or four schools, if that many. Of the top 12 or so rated kids in NC this year, four were pretty much in our pocket from the beginning and four would not consider coming here. There were four for whom there was real competition, Crowder, Lewis, Kalambyi and North. Kalambyi may be a bit of stretch. But the other three were definitely considering us seriously. Fedora is the one who wants to close the borders. If he is going to do that he must win over some of the kids who are genuinely torn. When he wins some of the true toss ups I will start to believe he can accomplish the goal he set for himself. Hope he does.

I agree with you greghl. As between North or Adams, I would want Adams. Improving the defense is imperative and Fedora and company can definitely put points on the board, North or no North. But its just very important to start getting a couple of the top 5 out of NC every year.

Re: 2013 Recruiting Updates

You can't expect Fedora to come in and get everyone in the state 1.5 years in. Most of the top 2013 kids in NC have been recruited by other coaches for three years so it is hard to change their minds in such a short amount of time. I expect the 2015 class to tell the tell on how Fedora is being perceived by instate guys. Although I think he is doing a good job now and will in the 2014 class as well.

I'm betting on Fedora for Mr. North. No inside info, just confidence in our coach on the trail.

I hope you're right. He certainly has all of us sold…but then again, we are all willing buyers.
