I just hope they're not the ones laughing after the game (regardless of the date). We need wins more than anything right now.

Saturday, Thursday or Tuesday afternoon - it doesn't matter to me. I'm looking forward to this game and all of the good ole trash talkin' that will most certainly precede it :).

And here I thought it wouldn't happen... :)P

Hahaha, aren't they cute?

I'm not old enough to remember the days of them in the ACC, but their hatred for UNC makes me laugh. However, I generally don't have a problem with them and you can't help but be impressed by the way Spurrier has built that program from the ground up.

Thursday works fine. Good exposure for both schools, especially for us since it's a home game.

RE: laughing at South Carolina fans

The problem is that the South Carolina fans remember stuff from the 70's and are holding grudges too. It seems to me both fan bases say ridiculous things.

Back to the date: The Gamecocks feel that UGA has had the advantage with the games between the two because the Dawgs have two whole extra days to prepare for South Carolina when the Gamecocks play on Thursday, not to mention seeing the Gamecocks on TV before their game. It has nothing to do with UNC. Anyway, it is the Gamecocks home game, and they really have the right to determine the date. However, TV money probably had the final say.

I live in Charleston. South Carolina fans hate Clemson. We may work our way back into the hard feelings of the 1970's if we schedule each other more often in the future but for now, maybe a few, hardcore forum posters bring that up but the South Carolina football fans I know (quite a few) worry about Clemson and UGa primarily, then the SEC schedule and then last and least, the "real Carolina" thing.

A nice win to start the season might rattle their confidence but their sights are set on BCS games not us.

RE: laughing at South Carolina fans

It never made sense that ESPN would allow the game to be on that Saturday night--not sure how the rumor got started? The original agreement back in 2010 had said SCar would get the first primetime game of the year in 2013 for their troubles for having to reschedule so that UNC and LSU could play. ESPN already has games scheduled for that Saturday night anyhow and has for years that would either have to be moved or shown concurrently with the Carolina/Scar game. I know Alabama and VT play that night and I want to say there is another, but they weren't going to have one on the mothership and one on the deuce--that is stupid.

It was announced at the very beginning that it would be a Thursday night game. I don't know why little Carolina fans thought it would be on Sat.

Doesn't the Thursday night game actually give South Carolina the advantage over UGA in that situation? South Carolina will be resting at home on Saturday watching UGA play. What am I missing here?

Actually it's the other way around. We prefer the first game to be a Thursday because that gives us the extra 2 days to prepare for the Dawgs. Typically our game with UGA is the 2nd game of the season...Last year being the exception.
We have won 3 in a row so there must be something to it :)

ND/Arizona St. is later in the season, you are probably thinking of LSU/TCU in Cowboys Stadium (plus Oklahoma St/Miss. St. is in Houston in Week 1 as well).

RE: laughing at South Carolina fans

Clemson opens up with Georgia in Death Valley on 8/31 also. So we've got this lineup for that Saturday:

VPI v. Alabama Chick-fil-A thing in Georgia Dome
Georgia at Clempson
LSU v. TCU in Jerry Bowl
Mississippi State v. Okie State in Houston

Maybe ESPN WILL have two games showing at primetime? Not a lot of room for a UNC/Scar game--at least not in primetime.

RE: laughing at South Carolina fans

They'll have one on ESPN and one on ABC that night (espn2 has a Nascar Nationwide series race at 7:30pm on 8/31/13). I have a bad feeling (for the Clemson fans, at least) that the Clemson/Georgia game is going to get stuck at noon or 3:30pm that day, which will have them boiling. I'm pretty sure the Chick-Fil-A Kick-Off and Cowboys Classic game contracts guarantee them a prime time kick-off.

I'm looking forward to a great game. I'm proud of the improvements around the stadium. And glad it's at night, afternoon in Columbia is hot as a 4-ball tomcat in a forest fire. I hope UGA and Clemson play 10 overtimes, the dawgs will be tough for us to beat between the hedges.

The stadium itself is quite impressive, though that part of Columbia is just so-so. I actually really like the campus and the downtown, the Vista and 5 Points. Cool town in my book. I know, I know, everybody says Columbia is trashy, but I like it. Remember, I've also lived in metro FayetNam and Door'em, too. So what would I know. I even have kinfolks in Havelock and Jacksonville...

From the ground up? You do know that Spurrier followed Hall of Famer Lou Holtz who gave him a pretty decent head start, right? Granted, Spurrier has kicked it up a notch, but he directly followed the SC coach who had the most bowl wins in school history.

Not trying to be a nit-picker, dave, but didn't the Gamecocks get their first ever bowl win in program history in about 1995 or so? How hard would it be to have the most bowl wins in school history? Two?

I'm not a fool, I know we'll do well to get out of there alive next August, but to pretend that SCar's overall football tradition is anything far South of mediocre is to be disingenuous. Yes, Spurrier has finally built up the program with elite level talent and coaching.

Up to this point, there have been a few aberrant years where very good coaches stumbled upon very good players (Dietzel-Holtz-Spurrier), but the overall results have only gotten consistently good in the VERY recent past. I'll give their fans lots of credit for supporting the team when they weren't very good, they deserve kudos for that. They are at least loyal. Remember, even under Spurrier their high water mark is an APPEARANCE in the SEC title game where they were outclassed by Auburn 56-17. They have never won an SEC title, and their only ACC title was at 7-4 in 1969 in a very down year for the league.

That said, they'll be a handful in August, and it's a big game on a big stage for us. I think we'll show up. And as the Germans outflanked the impenetrable French Maginot Line, so will we outflank the Frenchman Zhahdayveown Clownay and his band of Legionnaires. Real Carolina wins. Peace Out.

Re: laughing at South Carolina fans

if you guys think you will come anywhere close to waltzing in Columbia and walking about with a win you are dead wrong. With the crowd fired up it is one of the most intimidating places in the country (i.e. the Georgia game. I personally cant stand UNC, most people I know feel the same way. Night games are always electric and our fans will pack the stadium thats for sure. The student section is going to be going nuts for the first game, especially since a lot of them hate UNC partly because some didnt get in.

USC wins big time with an absolutely dominant team on a BCS bowl bound season. Our passing attack with DYlan Thompson will become one of the best in the SEC, we have a lot of small guys who are burners and hopefully Alshons younger brother, or Shaq Roland emerges as a bigger guy. I heard Shamier (Alshons brother) has made great strides this offseason and will be a big contributor.

As far as the question as to why Georgia has an advantage it is because it gives their staff two more days to analyze our plays and such compared to us.

Good Gawd. Who on this thread is even close to suggesting that UNC is going to waltz into Columbia and get an easy win?

Only an absurd evaluator of the situation would view that Georgia will have an advantage because SCar plays sooner. That is ridiculous logic. Yes, they will have an extra day or two to look at your tape and there is an outside chance that Richt could feel like his staff has Clemson down so they can dedicate time on Friday or Saturday morning to review SCar tape, but I seriously doubt it. But let's just suppose he did for a second. Do you honestly think that the extra day to analyze the tape (while prepping for their own game I might add) is going to outweigh the extra time (2 days) that SCar can completely focus on Georgia and (more importantly) rest and heal any wounds. Good grief. Talk about spin. I don't understand that thinking.

I guess if you say it enough, you really do start to believe it, but from my third party view, SCar absolutely has the advantage in that situation by playing early. Seems like only someone who was biased and/or doesn't understand the situation would suggest otherwise.

And when the UNC/SCar game is over, Georgia had better dedicate any free time they have to Clemson or they could start 0-2.

Perhaps we do understand or care more about reading comprehension. If you'd read my poasts throughout this thread you would have seen that I've given your city, stadium, university, current talent and coaches props and respect. Yes, I poked fun at your "tradition," which I've heard more than a few Gamecocks do themselves. I said we'd be lucky to get out of Columbia alive. How is that assuming we'd waltz in and blow you out?

Y'all have major league (read SEC level) talent and speed and we expect a dogfight. However, we ain't too shabby, either. Sleep on us at your peril.

My son was offered a generous scholarship package to the outstanding Honors College at SCar and it was in his final 3 schools, so we in our immediate family do not generally disrespect the University of South Carolina. However, if I show up in August and by some chance we win, this old Tar Heel boy from three generations worth of UNC legacy may remind y'all that you may well start fights but we stick like we have tar on our heels and finish them. God bless those Tar Heel boys!

Re: laughing at South Carolina fans

Our all time history in football is deplorable to say the least. But in the last couple of decades we've held our own. Clemson loves the all-time argument. But I tell them Spain and Portugal used to be world powers. We are not a power by any means, but we can compete with about anyone today in football. A long cry from the past. It will be a great game, a touchdown or less. We're breaking in 4 new LBs and a couple in the secondary. Before Bobby Richardson we weren't good in baseball either. Now we are a national power. Maybe it will never happen in football, but we're no longer everybody's homecoming game.

athfix, you've proven yourself to be a rational poaster here, and I greatly respect your opinion. You are always welcome here. Y'all have assembled elite level talent ACROSS the field, not just at the marquee positions such as Clowney and Lattimore. That is the difference between the SCar of today and the SCar of George Rogers' day.

BTW, I've met George and he drips with charisma. At a gala event my son (then very small) got to wear his Super Bowl ring and hold his Heisman Trophy. Upon discovering that I was a UNC alum George said to him: "If you want to go to the University of South Carolina you've got to be real smart. If you want to go to the University of North Carolina you've got to be REAL, REAL smart."

I'm not sure if you'll ever unseat the traditional powers in the SEC in the way that Florida did (because they were NOT one of those traditional powers until fairly recently, either) but you are certainly already competing with them. I don't question that whatsoever.

In some ways we miss you in the ACC, partially because of proximity and tradition, but you and I both know you're a better cultural fit in the SEC. That's not a slam or a praise, just an observation. We're tired of you pirating many of our best NC players, but if our program is where it needs to be, that won't be an issue any longer, SEC or not.

This will be a very tough game for us. We're not remotely "cocky" about it. VERY tough atmosphere. Night game, high stakes, old school, bad blood, border war. What could be better?

What could be better, not much except adding great food, cold beer, and pretty women. I'm old, not blind.
