I'm sure he's glad to be leaving too. Lot of bad **** happened here under his watch. Maybe some of it could have been handled better. UNC holds itself at a much higher standard than most. He's a good guy who loved UNC and tried to do what was best. He may or may not have been the right Chancellor for UNC, but I think it's our loss he's leaving. I wish him the best.

Thank the Lord! At last the healing can begin in July. Until then I look for chancellor Coward to continue to attack UNC and further damage her reputation. As for the new place, well, don' know much about it but Saint Looey is just about far enuf in the middle of nowhere for my comfort....
BUT NOT TO FAR FOR LAWSUITS AGAINST THIS A-HOLE! Wrongs must be righted, justice done....

BTW, Jan needs to go too. ASAP. Where was the FACULTY oversight of the Afro department?! They had just lots to say about football, but I guess looking after academics should be UP TO THE ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT!

RE: Thorp will be Provost at Washington University in St. Louis
Wash U is a much better place for a goober academic type like Thorp. no real sports to speak of, highly qualified student body that is a little on the nerdy side (speaking generally). relatively low profile school, despite its great academic reputation. Thorp can go hide there and play with his Rubic's cube and no one will bother him.

Re: Thorp will be Provost at Washington University in St. Louis
I have been told that if Thorpe stayed through June 30 he got a cash bonus, can anyone confirm or discredit that? I have never understood why several of the individual professors in the African-American studies department were allowed to resign or retire and thereby retain their retirement benefits, etc. rather than being terminated for cause. I'm concerned that there may be a similar situation with Thorpe. Anybody have the facts?

Re: Thorp will be Provost at Washington University in St. Louis
It would have been worse if we lied to investigators. It would have been worse if we got caught covering up the truth? It would have been worse if we didn't really want to uncover the truth. It would have been worse if someone else discovered the academic fraud in the AFAM department. It would have been worse if we didn't appoint an independent group to investigate the academic fraud. It would have been worse if we played football players that would later be determined to be ineligable. It would have been worse if we didn't show everyone that we care about doing things right and correcting problems. It would have been worse if we tarnished the University's reputataion in order to protect a few selfish young men who made some mistakes.
It could have been a lot worse (ie: see Miami).
Now give me your list of what we did wrong.
It was a very difficult situation. There is no playbook to follow. IMO, protecting the university's image and reputation is more important than sustaining a winning football program. And it looks like we did both.
**** happening to a university or its athletic program is not what defines it. How they choose to respond to it does. I'm very proud of the way we responded.

Re: Thorp will be Provost at Washington University in St. Louis
Nice red herring. None of that matters in the context of what we were discussing, and is woefully ignorant on top of it.
He, being Thorpe, TRIED HIS DAMNEDEST to blame all the problems on football and scapegoat the football program. Specifically TO hide the failings on the academic side. We, being he and his minions, deliberately hung our student athletes, and coaches, out in the wind to try and divert attention from "those" problems.
And, yes, we made the scandal muuuuuuuuuuuuch worse via our actions.

Where were these people when the events were actually happening? I'll tell ya: HELPING TO BRING IT ABOUT! Yep, mos' likely this bj was a central playa. But now that it's in the past (no matter how recent) he gets to re-write history according to the way HE wanted us to see it. Pure BS and until we stand up for ourselves and put these "revolutionaries" in the crapper, we're doomed to suffer. Along with all of those defenseless "student athletes" accused of so very many outrageous "violations" - WHICH WERE ALL LIES!
Jus' great, no?!

Given that most of what has happened was an academic problem and the academic head guy blamed it on the football coach and then wrongly fired him I can see why you think thorp has been judged too harshly.

FWIW I think this may be partially but only partially true. There seems to me to be an integrity (or lack thereof) issue. I would have serious concerns about that with him.

"He was certainly greener than I would have liked when he was hired, but the fact that he was targeted for the job of provost at one of the premier research institutions in the world demonstrates his strengths.
He'll do very well at WashU. Thorp is capable, just not particularly adept at dealing with the full spectrum of constituencies at an institution like Carolina. I predict he'll be a chancellor again, and it will be somewhere with an academic reputation every bit as impressive as Carolina's. However, he'll never be an administrator again somewhere with a top ten division I athletic department." ********************************* Perhaps the best summation of Thorpe that has been posted on this board since the entire fiasco was first revealed.

I cannot see saying he is a good guy when he uses others as scapegoats and does not (at least I haven't heard him) admit to his own mistakes. The rest may be accurate.

Thorp was in over his head, but it didn't help that he screwed up in such a high profile segment of the university. And he did nothing to help himself... made all the wrong moves. Had the school's problems only been academic, Thorp would still have a job here.
