Re: Florida State's poor bowl attendance cost more than pride.
According to the school's income statement from the game, obtained by Warchant.com via public records request, Florida State lost more than $478,000 from its participation in the ACC championship in Charlotte, N.C., on Dec. 1.

This is unfortunate for FSU that they had to play the worst participant ever in the ACCCG.
However, this happens occasionally. Florida had to eat about 1 mil because of poor Sugar Bowl sales this year.

The economy of these games are all out if whack. Individuals on these bowl committees are making 6 figures and sticking it to schools. Time to tear up these bogus contracts with ticket and hotel room guarantees.

You hit the nail on the head with bowl official salaries. Have you seen some of the bogus expenses these same people turn in to be paid for?
Time for the big schools to break away from the NCAA and form their own league with their own playoff format and keeping all monies earned. Can no longer bankroll all of the small schools with our successes. Kind of like welfare, no?

How did we go from ACC champ game discussion to bowl game discussion.

The NCAA doesn't make a dime from the bowl games or conference championship games...they only make money from the basketball tournament.

Tough break for F$U and the ACC.
The championship game seems to be cursed to have underwhelming match-ups or terrible locations every year.

Because both share contractual obligations for the privilege of playing in them. These obligations wind up costing Universities money when the point was to make a profit. The profit has been siphoned off by bowl committees and conference "partners".

Re: Florida State's poor Champ-Game attendance cost more than
One school of thought is to play the game at the home stadium of the participant with the better league record or BCS ranking (take your pick), but that didn't guarantee a sellout for the Pac-12 this year (Stanford Stadium had many empty seats for their CCG).
If we keep it at a neutral site, if FSU and Miami qualify, then Tampa would be a great site. If UNC and Clemson qualify, then Charlotte would be a great site. But of course there is always going to be a good chance that the participants in the game will come from places far away from the pre-designated site in a league as geographically expansive as ours. I think Atlanta would be a great site but of course that one is taken already.
Really, in the end, we just need to keep growing the ACC football brand. Over time it will develop, we had a great bowl season including the new teams coming in. Obviously this year a 6-6 qualifier didn't help.

Probably beating a dead horse here, but a dividing the divisions up geographically would help. Then a permanant site like Charlotte would be ideal for many but not all. Or, if we went geographic divisions route, let each division take turns "hosting" the CCG. Pick a site or sites that is conventient for the host division that year.
But, seeing that the conference now goes from the Canadian border to 90 miles from Cuba that wouldn't solve everything.

Yet Stanford had a huge turnout for the Rose Bowl. Get to that point and some folks have to decide whether to go to the title game or wait and use that toward a big bowl game...

But, but, but. but FSU is such a huge football school with the best fans who will travel anywhere for the noles. Would they travel as poorly to Kansas City or Dallas for a Big 12 Championship game. Oh, I forgot, they're the savior conference.

Re: Florida State's poor Champ-Game attendance cost more than
You get some notice for a bowl game, at least a month's worth, people can make plans, plus they are largely played during a time of year when people have vacation time to spend.
Even the Big Ten has struggled to fill up for its CCG, they've practically given tickets away to get people there so it will look full on TV.

I would say that the segment of the FSU fanbase that wants anything to do with the Big XII at this point is probably less than 5%.

No doubt the SECCG is a massive success, the only conference that has the formula down. Certainly though UF often has underwhelming attendance at bowl games.
But even NFL attendance has slipped. Football is too good on your high def TV.
