Re: UNC Video: Winter Workouts ("Pre-Blue Dawn")
some of the form in that video is real bad. You should never swing like that on curls or just about any exercise. Terrible for gains and easily leads to injury.

Re: UNC Video: Winter Workouts ("Pre-Blue Dawn")
Their not trying to build muscle as much as build power. Bodybuilding doesn't have jack crap to do with building powerful athletes.

If you want to build power, build it correctly. Otherwise, you're just cheating yourself.
And unc15 is correct. Improper form does lead to injury.

RE: UNC Video: Winter Workouts ("Pre-Blue
I don't know much about lifting, but I'd always heard that on machines and things like that you should do the reps slowly and let the weights down slowly. They don't appear to be doing that. Was I told the wrong information?

I think they're going for explosiveness, which would mean you'd do fast reps.

RE: UNC Video: Winter Workouts ("Pre-Blue
I gotta think this is intentional? That was my initial thought but I have always lifted for personal competitiveness, and to look good. I would think dead lifts, clings, bench press, and this kind of form equals explosiveness? Anybody got a personal training background here?

Re: UNC Video: Winter Workouts ("Pre-Blue Dawn")
Lol. Try curling 135lbs with strict form. There is a difference between being loose and out of control and then using a bit of momentum to target super fast twitch muscle fibers in order to build explosive power.
You don't train athletes like bodybuilders unless you want slow, lunky, blobs of muscles that can't run, jump, cut, and explode out of the hole.
Lou's not an idiot. He knows what he's doing.

RE: UNC Video: Winter Workouts ("Pre-Blue
That type of training serves a different purpose, and is for the general population trying to 'build muscle' and just be fit. Slow negatives do serve a purpose and are done at times for athletes (muscle control, etc), but the majority of reps are done explosively with faster negatives to build power without overly tearing down muscle tissue. Slow negatives cause allot of micro-trauma and ALLOT of time for recovery. Football players (and athletes in general) do not benefit as much from this type of training. You do explosive work to build power and get the heart rate elevated to build anaerobic conditioning which has direct carry over to the football field.
So, no...you were not told wrong. You were just instructed to use weights to serve a different purpose from what you are seeing here. --------------------------------------------- --- The Bomber wrote:

RE: UNC Video: Winter Workouts ("Pre-Blue
Thanks for the responses. I guess that to live up to my board name I need to be more explosive.

Re: UNC Video: Winter Workouts ("Pre-Blue Dawn")
Laugh if you want, but the fact remains is that you don't train athletes like bodybuiders. Some need to gain weight, but for most you want to maintain weight and develop strength and power which makes them more explosive. Building muscle without adding sufficient power/explosiveness will only slow an athlete down. That is no good.
Their form is not loose anyway. I can guarantee you they are staying tight the entire time even though to move the heavier weight they are relying on momentum a little to get the weight moving.

Re: UNC Video: Winter Workouts ("Pre-Blue Dawn")
fedora , I am a DPT and my comment was that for these guys the weight was not extreme but they are developing fast twitch muscle fibers, that being said form is always critical to guard against tendinitis.

Re: UNC Video: Winter Workouts ("Pre-Blue Dawn")
That is absolutely 100% correct. Proper mechanics is the most paramount thing in training. Poor mechanics equals poor results and eventually leads to injury. I am a huge proponent of what Kelly Starrett teaches on mobilitywod.com. What I was referring to was the fact that what many call sloppy technique is just the use of momentum to get the weight moving more explosively to develop the fast twitch fibers like you say.
The form police more times than not really don't have a full grasp on what they are talking about which is why I decided to comment on this matter. Not that I know it all, but a casual glance at youtube exercise videos comments makes this evident.
