Until you get into March (more daylight, better weather, etc...), the majority of your matches are going to be played indoors, so they have a separate 16-team indoor championship that you have to qualify for in February. The main full-field tennis championship still takes place every May, after the spring season.

Womens Indoor Tennis
When I played tennis in high school (I was ranked no.6...on our sorry team), our captain (we seldom had a coach) juggled our line-up, sacrificing me to some of the best players in Eastern North Carolina (Semi Mintz, etc.), in order to get some points. How do college teams assign players to ##1-6? Is there some kind of honor system? With the no.1-ranked recruiting class, things are looking up for Carolina's women's tennis.

No. Tennis is not one of the sports counted for some reason.

RE: Womens Indoor Tennis
has too if they let all of those other sports that the colleges in the West offer that the schools in the East do not. Just saw the posting above me that said tennis does not count (that is crap).

RE: Womens Indoor Tennis
It is indeed crap. On the website, I see many sports that UNC dosn't offer... things like skiing, bowling, hockey, rifle, water polo, men's volleyball, but no tennis for Division I. It is apparently so weighted to the western schools that it seems virtually inmpossible for anyone but Stanford win it (explains why they win it every year). I don't understand this at all.

Neither is Men's Lacrosse (which I did not realize until now), though I can understand that one more since so few schools offer it. M & W Tennis has a full 64-field NCAA tournament, seems strange not to count that sport.

It may not count in the Director's Cup, but it is still more legit than Bass fishin'. Congrats, Lady Heels.

RE: Womens Indoor Tennis
The indoor championship is not included in the Director's Cup, but the outdoor championships is.
The line up is done by honor system. There is also a ranking done for the top 100 or so players, so coaches have a decent idea who the teams best 1 - 6 is. If a coach thinks the other team is stacking, he or she can challenge. I'm not exactly sure how a line up is challenged, but it can be.

Charlott, In NC high school tennis this is addressed in the coach's NCHSAA handbook. In the past, a lot of coaches would construct the doubles teams based on the score after the 6 singles matches - you can see the handbook stuff below states it is considered cheating. With the ranking ststem I bet any coach would know if something is odd about the other team's lineup.
----------------------------------------------
Players shall be ranked in order of ability, the best player on the team playing at the #1 position, the second best at #2 and so on through all positions. This rule shall also apply to doubles play, with the strongest combination listed at #1 and so on. In the case a player is not available in singles, all players must move up. The team appearing with insufficient number of players shall default matches an the bottom of the line-up (i.e. the six player team appearing with five players must default at the #6 singles position, and in doubles, at the #3 position). STACKING YOUR LINE-UP IS NOT ALLOWED AND IS CONSIDERED CHEATING. TENNIS 87 Tennis TENNIS The positions paired at the number-one doubles positions (e.g., #1 and #3 = 4) must add up to an equal or lower number that those paired at the number two doubles (e.g., #2 and #4 = 6). The number two doubles pairing must add up to an equal or lower number than those paired at #3 doubles (e.g., #5 and #6 = 11). A number one singles player may NOT play at number three doubles. in doubles.

Re: Womens Indoor Tennis
Good and helpful. I was often asked if I was really no.
2 or1, and I fessed. We still lost. We played it straight one time, and we and I won our only match, vs Wilmington New Hanover. We couldn't even celebrate that long. The baseball team lost in bottom of last inn. and threatened to beat on us if we made a sound on bus.
