Koenning on last minute flip

Posted: 2/8/2013 3:02 PM

Koenning on last minute flip

Off an article from rival. It's not the whole article just this particular part I wanted to share.

Koenning didn't make any excuses about the limited number of scholarships the Tar Heels were facing this cycle, but did express disappointment that they weren't in position to land another defensive back.

Certainly the last-minute defection of Korrin Wiggins didn't help, and Koenning spoke about that particular situation.

"With the DB situation, it's a little disconcerting that there's some guys that we really liked---two guys in particular we really had earmarked and we really liked and we felt like we could have gotten---but we couldn't go full-blast with them because we were technically full," he said.

"And to have someone flip on you, after they had plenty of time (to let you know) and I don't know how many times, when asked, 'Are we (UNC) all right? Are we all right?' (the answer was) 'Yeah, Yeah, Yeah,' it's just kind of, it's the nature of the beast, and it's not the first time it's ever happened

That is lame sauce. No sense in wasting anyone's time. To be a UNC commit for a year until NSD is a complete joke.

I also think his high school coach has to play a part in this. Just ask the kid are you really committed here is the situation at UNC! Maybe he did kids will be kids but this one just has a bad taste to it.

I was actually defending Wiggins in a different thread but after reading this, I'm not anymore.

I assumed (yes, I know what it does) the coaches knew already this was a very good possibility, but it seems he really hung them out to dry.

The coaches should have dropped Wiggins last summer. He wasn't "committed" and let this be known by taking a bunch of visits.

staff should have had a fall-back plan...as soon as he took a visit, they should have implemented...first come first serve...negotiate from strength not weakness/paralysis.

Re: Koenning on last minute flip

Coaches get a bad rap when they pull offers once a commit goes visiting other schools. This is one of the situations where the coach should be commended for doing it. This kid committed right after NSD 2012 and had plenty of time to notify the coaches. Instead he waits to NSD 2013 to let his intentions be known.

If kids want to visit various schools, do it before you commit...I don't blame you. If you shake someone's hand on a deal, be man enough to stick with it. It's one thing to commit in January and back out a month later but this is BS. That's why there should be a fall signing period for football.

I might have made a few bad decisions in my day but the one I never did was give my word and then reverse it. Let Clem's son have him and let's mosey.

I have not weighed in on this yet. But like I have said many times. To switch last minute knowing we are in a numbers crunch it really ****** me off. He had the chance to let the staff know and he didnt. Really was crappy and I dont respect this kid. All he had to do was tell them he was moving on and both parties would have been fine. Instead he takes the cowards way out instead of being a man about it.

Clemson had a hand in this too. If they truly knew he was switching weeks ago then they are just as cowardly to tell him not to tell us. I hate this little ***** Dabo even more now.

I tried to hold back but I mentioned this a few weeks ago. Peers thought he was overhyped. Talked to kids that camped with him whose judgement is unbiased and they said he was not as good as advertised.

I would agree with pulling a kid's offer if he makes visits to other schools after giving UNC a committment.

But, lets be honest here. There are some players that you're not going to pull an offer from, even if he did take visits after verbaling to UNC.

Don't forget the parents. They could have easily demanded he show a bit more class. Korrin is just a kid, and it is easy at his age to caught up in things. That is where adults come in and are are supposed to come in a keep you from doing something stupid.

I understand where Vic is coming from on the blatant lying. But to be honest, I would have dropped this kid as soon as he took another visit after his verbal. I would never claim to be a better judge of talent than a professional coach, but I saw this kid play several times and as I said in the earlier thread, I doubt seriously that Wiggins will ever be anything more than a career special teamer.

Looking forward to him getting burned by our wide receivers in the near future.

ETA: 2015, apparently, unless it's the ACC championship game.

Luckily I dont need someone telling me how to feel and react to anything. So screw off with that...

Kid should have told the staff he wasnt committed to us when asked. For that he is a nozzle.. And as for Dabo. If the kid was committed to him, to be so slimey that he tells the kid to lie to us continually is just plain pathetic. Both of the losers deserve each other.

I know what you mean but as others have said when he began visiting he was telling us he was not commited. I think our staff was trying to do the right thing but sometimes you get burned in the short run. We can all just remember this if in the future we yank someone's offer.

If this is all true the young'n would not have fit in well with all the class recruits the staff here have gotten. If you look at the Switzer thing and the TJ thing you can tell this guy might not have felt at home.

RE: Koenning on last minute flip

I think it was pretty crummy, especially since we have a limited number of scholarships we could give out. However, I think the staff should have seen the writing on the wall. This kid was in practically every campus besides unc leading up to signing day. I don't like this practice of keeping secrets, I didn't like it when Sean Tapley did it for us, and.I don't like it when Wiggins does it to us. If you don't have the balls to face the music regarding your.decisions, then you don't need to be making them.

Re: Koenning on last minute flip

It makes me glad that he's not coming to the Hill. What he did, knowing that we were on limited scollys tells me that he has **** poor character and therefore better off at clemson.Wouldn't surprise me either if the staff down there didn't have a hand in it.It's a dog eat dog world to some people,(and they know we are an up and coming team), and I agree with another poaster that his parents should have been a better influence on his choice to keep lying to us.I think our staff did a fantastic job of recruiting this year and we'll be alright. He'll probably be a pain anyway.Since he did what he did,I hope he comes to regret his decision.

Re: Koenning on last minute flip

I think it will benefit us in the long run. Next january we can take 3 early enrollees who count towards this year, then take another 20 in next year's class. That means we will scarcely notice schollie reductions next year. Additionally, this staff has been working the 2014 class longer and is much more entrenched. It should also be a great year for in-state talent.

I'd rather have that ship available for a top flight talent next year. This is a tough pill to swallow, but we're almost through the scholarship crunch (on the front end anyways).

not that star ratings are be all to end all , but its not like we lost a great 5 star elite superstar kid.. he was a 3 star and while thats good and all, its still not in the 5 star 'make a immediate impact' territory

we will survive, LOL...easily!!!!

Re: Koenning on last minute flip

thanks for that information. I didn't realize numbers under 20 could be made up with next year early enrollees. Explains why Fed would pass on 2013 lesser talent after Wiggins' move. If we find 3 talents for early 2014, that would be great and probably include someone better than wiggins. The more I see of Fedora, the more I'm convinced UNC has the right guy. I good HARD spring session for added toughness and we may be ready to explode on folks in the fall.

that's not the point. the point is that he waited until the last possible moment to change. had he been a man and done it sooner, it would allowed out coaches the opportunity to get involved with other kids.

Re: Koenning on last minute flip

The kid could have told the coaches to look for someone else and that he didn't want to deal with the pressure of announcing he would not be coming until there was nothing he could do about it. I am sure our coaches would have appreciated the honesty and we could have gotten someone else. It is frustrating and it works both ways I guess but this is not the mark of a high character individual.
