ACC Network spring 13

ACC Network spring 13

Looks like the ACC will be upping their revenue. ACC Network begins this spring.

It appears rumors of the demise of the acc are just that. With ND coming in 14, negotiations with ESPN, NBC and CBS are already on-going. With the ACC getting it's own network would that enhance or dis-interest the "alliance" the B12 wants to create???

Re: ACC Network spring 13

Hopefully congratulations, if only because it can't help but strengthen the future and integrity of your conference.

That said, Scout abridged your URL below and I couldn't find it. Do you know what the full URL is?

This just says a lot of games will be on ESPN3. Don't see anything about increased revenue. Maybe the OP saw something else.

ESPN3 is NOT a network. 2/3 of people can't watch it.

RE: ACC Network spring 13

So, this isn't the formation of an ACC network like the B1G network or what the SEC network will be. This is a continuation of the same, nothing new. The league is still exploring the concept of a true ACC network, which I believe would make content available through an ACC network channel and ESPN3 simultaneously. I too would support a Network, i.e. pay extra, but this is not an ACC Network.

"In addition to the 159 events announced Thursday as part of the conference package, other games will be carried by the ACC Digital Network, by the regional cable partners of various ACC institutions, and by the schools' websites."

Make sure and support the network. I didn't ask for the Big1G network and have it. I never watch it. I hope the new ACC will hire a marketing firm and do a serious investment in marketing all the changes. It is our best chance to see the pendulum swing.

Is this the Special Events Channel on TWC that I can get for like $12 a month? Pass.

Agree. I don't think this announcement has any signficant impact on the future of the ACC.

Also agreed. If anything, it's posturing for the ACC trying to build their brand as a multi-sport conference that is worthy of its own network.

Re: ACC Network spring 13

Since I don't have cable I get espn3 on the internet. Most of the games are blacked out inside the ACC territory though replays are available an hour after games end. Better than nothing.

The goheels arrangement with NuLion is not worth the asking price but, again, better than nothing.

Re: ACC Network spring 13

No kidding!

The goal is NO ACC content on ESPN3. At all.

Again. One more time. Take all UNC content that lands on ESPN3 and that which goes unbroadcast (many baseball games, women's soccer and hoops) and ask yourself if that could not form the basis for a Tar Heel Network.

Can't see an ACC Network working. ESPN3 seems like a good solution for now.

Re: ACC Network spring 13

Disagree. I don't know what the cost structure looks like and the level of subscribership is needed for the network to break even, but, given the reach of the ACC and the fan bases' appreciation for its member schools' athletic programs, I believe it would be a success. We're not talking about one school attempting to start its own network, e.g. Texas. We're talking about 14 schools and Notre Dame. An ACC Network is a no-brainer.

I think I'm a fair representation of other ACC fans. I have event sI want to watch and if I find they're on ESPN3 or are available from another source I will watch them. However, I will not search ESPN3 for an event. I would more likely not, flip to one or more stations and watch a program that's playing. I would personally subscribe to the ACC network and its programming would be on my radar and factor into my viewing choices when I'm looking for sports programming (unlike with ESPN3).

Re: ACC Network spring 13

Swofford better be working every day to get the ACCN off the ground some time in 2014 if not sooner. Being relegated to ESPN3 is not a long term solution by any stretch to compete with the PAC12, B10, and soon-to-be SECN.

The ACC doesn't have a choice at this point. The cable network has got to happen or else, and not just for the money. The league is in a tough spot, though, because the media rights are already owned by ESPN until 2027. Still the league better come up with something soon.

GT's AD Griffin addresses ACC network possibility

"With the league looking for additional revenue sources that can help member schools compete with the other BCS conferences, a network in partnership with ESPN could provide that aid. Griffin described the conversation as “very preliminary.” Still, he said it’s conceivable it could be running by the 2014-15 academic year, when Notre Dame and Louisville join the league and the four-team football playoff begins."

Griffin said there is interest with both ESPN and the league for further research and assessment.

Re: ACC Network spring 13

I don't know how it is worded in the contract, but I doubt there is anything that would prevent the ACC from partnering with Raycom TODAY. Yes, the ACC relinquished rights to its third tier games to ESPN, but ESPN sold them to Raycom. If Raycom wanted to share the investment costs, the ACC could partner with them NOW. That being said, the content would have to be guaranteed in some way (at least one bb game on the weekend and one during the week, at least one football game each week, etc.) and a long term sale of the third tier rights would have to be agreed upon between ESPN and Raycom (currently I believe it's renegotiated each year). There obviously is some value in what is left over from what ESPN doesn't want and adding Notre Dame's all sports (and adding Louisville instead of Maryland may help but to a lesser extent) is only going to help that value.

Re: ACC Network spring 13

ESPN needs The ACC conference approval with a new contract to agree to launch this new ACC Network channel. Also, with Syracuse, Pitt, Louisville and ND (non-football) joining the ACC that adds big value that gives the ACC new $$$ that both ESPN and Raycom has to pay for.

I think the ACC should buy Raycom Sports from Raycom Media. Raycom Sports only revenue is the ACC. The ACC has some leverage by saying if the ACC breaks up Raycom Sports is out of business. Then the ACC could cut a deal with Raycom Media to sell their 22 TV broadcast stations ACC games like they do now. Everyone at Raycom Sports works with ESPN/ACC on the ACC Network and the ACC Digital Network as TV moves to Internet in the next 10 years.

Raycom Media sells local TV advertisements now for revenue on their 22 broadcast TV stations. So the ACC Network cable carriage fee wouldn't be a good model for their broadcast model with nation wide ACC Network. Then the ACC Channel is between the ACC & ESPN as a carriage fee model for income. With 14.5 ACC teams there is lots of content. ND even in just the men and women olympic sports plus ND football replays would make this a coast to coast ACC Network fast. I may not like ND but they will be putting a lot of money in the ACC if we get a ACC network.
