What do we need from 2014 recruiting?

What do we need from 2014 recruiting?

ccheel1 points out that with just ten seniors on the team and the limit of 80 total scholarships, we are going to have a tiny recruiting class for 2014.

A few non-seniors will transfer, take medical hardship/leave, or get booted for grades this spring and the next. I guess we could also ask Roy Smith, Tommy Heff and Mark Mcneil to give up their scholly (which would seem kinda wrong).

We can add two to the number of recruits as early enrollees, and count them against 2013. Still it is probably gonna be a mid-teens class.

So which positions would you a give your umpteen scholarships too?

will it be that easy to sign 20? That's 8 people that flunk out, get sick or go pro or have their scholly yanked as a former walk-on.

Re: What do we need from 2014 recruiting?

We need balance, but preferably more focus on the defensive side of the ball. I'll be honesty, after watching this team this year and how proficient the offense looked at times and how despicable the defense looked at times, it is mind-boggling to me that there were more offensive recruits in this class than defensive (10 to 7). That's just dumb in my opinion. Maybe the staff sees something that I don't, but the offense was above average last year and only needed help at a few positions.

I would be fine if they wasted four scholarships apiece in this next class on DT's and corners, but since they brought in NO LB's, they'll need to focus on those as well. I'll go with this:

4 DT
4 corners
2 LB/bandit
2 DE
2 ram/safeties
1 QB
3 RB/WR/TE
2 OL

6 offense / 14 defense

I know this is out of balance to have more than double what you have on one side of the ball, but when your problem side of the ball isn't addressed, it just digs a deeper hole.

Our offense is going to be really good again next year.

I have seen on another site that we will only take 1 WR this time.

I guess you didn't see the other post that discussed this. Apparently we will only have 10 slots to offer, IF all we lose is the 10 seniors off of this years team. I am sure there will be other attrition due to injury, leaving team early, etc, but I see no way we will or can sign 20.

No doubt. 1 QB per year is the way to go. UNC doesn't need a starter necessarily in 2014; they just need a guy who can step in and be capable when called upon.

With that said, here are the specific players who I would want to fill those needs:

QB: Jalan McClendon
RB: Elijah Hood
RB: Derrell Scott OR Sony Michel
WR: Jaylan Barbour OR Braxton Berrios
WR: Trevion Thompson
WR: Jamil Kamara
TE: Avery Edwards
OL: Bentley Spain
OL: Steven Moss
OL: Donell Stanley
DL: Robert Dinkins (Committed)
DL: Jacob Pugh
DL: Andrew Brown
DL: Chris Register
LB: Rashaan Evans
LB: Christian Miller
DB: Tajze Battle (Committed)
DB: Ronnie Clark
DB: Johnathan Lloyd
DB: Quin Blanding

Get those guys, and you have another top-20 class, possibly a top-10 class.

Re: What do we need from 2014 recruiting?

Ships happen... The class size may not be 20, but it sure won't be 10. Just look at the IC recruiting board for the 2012 class and look at the guys who don't finish out their eligibility:

DPM
Gio
Hansen
Josh Adams
Fitz
Nix
Okakpu
Desir
Virgile
Harrelson
Bunn

Note that we probably are not going to play at 80 this year so we may be able to back count an early enrollee in January to this class (which is only at 17).

It's pointless to speculate on who will be a player who will be part of this "attrition", but there are always kids who want to transfer so they can play somewhere (Hansen, Fitz), kids who want to go pro early (DPM, Gio), kids who are 5th year seniors and know they aren't going to play and just want to graduate (Harrelson), have career ending injuries (Adams), or a host of other things that prevent them from keeping them eligible (Okakpu, Virgile, Bunn).

Re: What do we need from 2014 recruiting?

Im going to start by saying that we only have 10 sr nxt yr leaving 4 off/ 6 def
So alot of red shirts will be handed out this yr and nxt.. but here goes!!

Qb-1 ( red shirt player)
Rb-1 (red shirt player)
A-back -1 (definitely red shirt)
Wr-2 ( 1 will be a stud the other a red shirt)
Te-1 ( will be a stud but still red shirt)
Ot-2 ( 1 will be a stud but red shirt)
G-2 ( stud but red shirt)
Dt-2/3 (1 stud 2 redshirts)
De-1 ( red shirt)
Bandit-1( red shirt but a stud)
Lb-1 (red shirt)
S/ ram-3(2 studs but 1 will play)
Cb-3 (1 will get a shot 1 will redshirt)

So thats 20-21 kids. Just my opinion!!! Thats wat blog boards are for!!!

Really hope we recruit strongly on the OLine. That was strong under Davis. So far, just average with Fedora.

Re: What do we need from 2014 recruiting?

to me Defensive Tackle remains our biggest opening and I say get at least 3 studs - one to compete as a true frosh in the three deep, the other two to redshirt.

As far as least need, to me bandit looks pretty stacked considering Bart, Drennon, Haynes could all potentially play it, and who knows which of them will redshirt, esp if they think Gnonkonde is progessing. WR doesn't seem so dire but maybe it depends on how good the frosh are.

We do need DT's but I would love to get about 2 or 3 5*'s into the fold and go from there.

RE: What do we need from 2014 recruiting?

O-line and D-line studs. Getting some depth at Ram and Bandit wouldnt hurt. I think Coach is still trying to find the right guy(s) for that. Speaking of which does anyone know the Ram and Bandit guys he had and USM. What difference athletically are we missing than what he ran there. Sure the competition and players are better in the ACC but its obvious that you cant just plug any athlete in and expect defensive success.

Move rashad or Otis to MLB. That will take care of a major need.

2013 class has 9 offensive players and 8 defensive. It would have been 9 and 9 if Wiggins had not switched.

Scout quotes 10 offensive and 7 defensive. This is a Scout site, so I use Scout position assignments although the ambiguity is probably due to Mikey Bart being listed as a TE and he is likely going to be a DT. That being said, there should have been more attention given to the defensive side of the ball IMO.

Did someone say above that Butch recruited the OL well?!? This is a huge reason why we were only 8-5 in 2009. Only one OL was in the class of 2008 (Cooper)--that was a year with a dozen swings and misses--worst recruiting job by that staff in its 4-5 years was not bringing in more OL in its first two classes. Of the four that we got in c/o 2007, only Cam Holland contributed significantly (Dykes was a medical and Bryant lost his mind). That 2009 season really could have used some junior OL to help out, but all that was left was Gaskins (who was hurt all the time and didn't contribute much) and Holland who was good but not spectacular. IMO, the 2007 and 2008 classes should have had four or five OL apiece given the sizes of those classes and considering what we had on the depth chart. Davis really dropped the ball on OL recruiting early on. He and the staff made up for it in the 2009 and 2010 classes, but if he really wanted to achieve greatness in 3-4 years, he should have done a better job of getting guys in who could help protect TJY and block for Draughn, White, etc. Our OL depth in 2009 was flat out atrocious.

Re: What do we need from 2014 recruiting?

I want to see how the redshirted players do in Spring practice and how they and the newbies do after several games next season.

Right now I see the biggest potential needs to be:

DT - a run stuffer
DE - speed off the edge
Ram - larger (6'2" 210+), very good tackler
S - larger, faster
TE - at least 6'5", this offense needs an Ebron type every year
MLB
CB - capable of press coverage

Those seven need to be special players.

The rest can be filled out as shown by season performance.

A lot of talent on the OL, potentially. No proven depth, so feed that position every year.
There is no proven big RB to replace Blue.
Generally take 1 QB/yr,.
A dynamic receiver is always welcome.

One more year of limited scholarships means being highly selective is a necessity.

Get those guys and it would be top ten without a doubt, unfortunately about 3 or 4 of those guys are long shots at best.

Re: What do we need from 2014 recruiting?

1 qb
1 rb only if elite or if Riley cannot play. Otherwise none
2 WR/A-Back
1 TE
3 OL
1 K
4-5 DL
2 LB
4-5 CB/S depending on DL and RB

We will reach 20

Agreed. Even with 3/4 of that class (assuming all the long shots went elsewhere) though I think you're right that it would be borderline top-10.

I have no backup data here.
But would guess that Fedora;s class of OL this week was stronger than Butch's first OL class WE got GREAT OLs but latter on..........
