Depth by Versatility

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – North Carolina countered its limited scholarship allotment for the 2013 recruiting class by not only focusing on quality over quantity, but by also emphasizing versatility to cover multiple positions.

I just hope the versatility does not become a disadvantage.

How is that possible?

RE: Depth by Versatility

That makes no sense whatsoever, AH. The more versatile the players are then the more different positions they can or could fill -- if necessary. That's critical when you're operating with less than a full complement of players. Fedora does not equate versatility to mean what I think you take it to mean -- "jack of all trades master of none". He even said these are all INCREDIBLY talented athletes with high football IQ, and many have the size, speed and skill necessary to play multiple positions within their particular position group.

Are we going to enroll 2 kids next January and count them against this years class?

UNC can elect to go that route if it chooses.

Fedora addressed that yesterday -- in regard to the individual players that he was speaking about. For instance, he said Brad Henson at 6-5 295 has (will have) the size to play at guard and also the quickness, length and reach to play outside at tackle.

Players having to remember many responsibilities beyond what they would have to if they played only one position. I don't mean it can't work, I am just saying I hope it's not a disadvantage.

RE: Depth by Versatility

Remember last year when the secondary constantly missed assignments? How many times were receivers 5-10 yards behind our safeties? Versality is great combined with experience. These young guys are not likely to pick up the defense any faster than last year's group. Versality is great, but for the time being, simplification will be the key word for the new guys. Hopefully, this year's class will benefit from the experience of our veterans and progress much faster. They sure look like a talented bunch.
