Quality......that's what Coach Fedora said on ESPNU today. Said this would be the class that would compete for MULTIPLE championships.

I saw that. Pretty impressive given only 17 recruits.

Not to hijack but how do some of these schools sign so many? Texas A&M has signed 34. Isn't the max allowable total 85?

Grayshirts, juco route, prep school. They obviously know not all 34 are going to qualify, so they try and "lock" them up with their LOI's and hope they pan out in the next year.

I don't understand these rankings...we are 18 on ESPN....28 on scout...and 40 on Rivals? How can they be so far apart?

Because Rivals sucks arse. They have Trubisky as a three star lol. In other words, on Rivals you aren't a 5 star unless you are being recruited by Alabama, Ohio State, USC, or LSU..etc.

Coach Fedora and company has brought us in really good recruiting class considering the sanctions we have. Hopefully we build off this because we need to consistently be in the top 15 recruiting classes each year to build a team that can compete for championships. Maybe next year we can bring in a few more of the high profile guys we missed on this year and get UNC football up with the big boys.

gonna be an exciting year i think, the more i listen and see LF talk
the more i like him....in a couple years i think UNC should and will have to pay lots of cash to keep him.....could Tribunski play as QB over Renner this year? LF says whoever is better plays, so i guess we ll see how good the Recruits are, great class cant wait till FB season
starts

Re: ESPN Rankings...Wow!!!

I'm happy for all the new Tar Heels.

Still National Signing Day remains depressing looking at all the North Carolina talent that leaves to play football elsewhere. Additionally its becoming more and more apparent that the SEC is going to be the lead sled dog and everyone else is looking up their butts. Heck...,even Ole Miss is ranked in the top 5 recruiting now.

Once again my best to a great 20-40th ranked class. You're going to have some great careers here.
A Tar Heel team that wins 9-10 regular season games and plays in the ACC championship may have a room named for them at the stadium.....or a group statute outside of it.

What a horrible attitude. Carolina has won 9-11 games several times as well as winning conference championships. We will again as long as we don't prevent it internally.

Your downplaying of this class just shows your lack of knowledge. We have an average star rating equal to the top 15. That is what matters.
35 two stars will never beat 17 3.2 stars even if Rivals and Scout count that way to make the SEC oversigners happy.

RE: ESPN Rankings...Wow!!!

Trubisky was being recruited by those schools, especially OSU. I think the biggest problem with Rivals and Scout is the emphasis they place on number of recruits... sometimes you just aren't going to sign 25 players (and if you sign more than that they aren't all going to be in this recruiting class so why rank them in it?). Anyways, that can lead to a big discrepancy... but not signing 25 every year is going to start to take a toll (so I guess it does have some predictive power over time... I just don't think it is particularly relevant in any given year)

Re: ESPN Rankings...Wow!!!

Think about it for a moment. ESPN ranked our class no. 18 and we only signed 17 players. If the quality of the players signed translates into quality on the playing field, one can reasonably argue that our limited class of quality players equals a higher ranked class with a high number of recruits who were not of the same quality and caliber as ours.

LF is the short and long term answer to Carolina football and hopefully, he will stay long enough to build a solid program that can and will compete for the conference and eventually, a national championship. After a few minor doubts, Larry Fedora has won me over and when he finally has the team built around his recruits, I am convinced the results will be pleasing to all of us long-suffering Carolina football fans.

Good job recruiting Coach Fedora and staff.

this tells me that our coaches are outworking most if not almost all other coaching staffs. The top ten almost every year recruit for themselves on name or tradition alone. UNC still has to work and our staff puts it in.

I am happy

Only signing 17 will come back to haunt you in a few years. Unless you sign 33 next year, depth will end up being an issue. The SEC schools have it figured out. Having 11 good backups is just as important as having 11 studs on each side of the ball. You have to sign the max every year.

That is why scholarship reductions is considered a NCAA penalty. One I believe LF & his staff can can overcome.

True. And I think it will hurt us on the defensive side of the ball. But, we can only hope for the best. Great recruiting class overall. Of course we could have used Wiggins for that extra body on defense. Can't wait to have these scholly reductions off.

I remember lots of 9 win kind of seasons...but the last ACC championship I remember was way back in 1980. I don't think its a horrible attitude...more like a realistic hopeful one....especially considering both Duke and Wake have claimed ACC championships since us and UVA has two. I have as much hope as anyone the beginning of every year. Unfortunately 30 plus years of hope is all it has boiled down to. But I'm still hoping.

Good post. The recruiting restrictions will hurt our depth while we're on probation. That is for sure. And, that is exactly the area where SEC teams have it over everybody else.

I do believe that Coach Fedora and his staff have done a tremendous recruiting job, given the scholarship limitations. If their work translates into wins on the field, recruiting will only improve. And, hopefully stop the outflow of in-state talent to places like Clemson. If we can begin to keep those NC kids home, we can have something special here.

in the SEC they sign over the max and if anyone else try that the NCAA will be in your city VERY QUICK.

First, Carolina is only allowed to enroll 19 max this year, so 17 isn't that far off. No school is allowed to enroll more than 25 in a single year, and Carolina will be limited to 20 again next year, so your number of 33 isn't valid either way.

No school is allowed to have more than 85 players on scholarship at any given time, including those players that are redshirting. If you do the math, you see that 25 per class ( 17 + 33 / 2 = 25 avg) x 5 classes = 125 players. Sure, that'd be great for depth - and every conference in the country, including the SEC, realizes how important depth is. But the only way you can enroll that many every year is to have a great deal of attrition. Flip it around, and you will see that you can keep 85 if you sign/enroll 17 each year, with no attrition. Of course, I realize zero attrition is unrealistic, but really no more so than the idea that we will sign only 17 each year.

Re: ESPN Rankings...Wow!!!

Now that Fedora has been on job for a complete season, I think it is pretty clear that he is an upgrade to what we had before.

Things we have learned:
His offense is the real deal and can score on anyone
He can recruit with anyone.
He is using UNC basketball to his advantage in recruiting.
He can win the coastal division without a 5 year plan.

Final things to checkoff:
Better defensive play.
Stop GT's offense.

The future is now. Fedora is about to shock the college football world.

RE: ESPN Rankings...Wow!!!

Great breakdown. I think limiting attrition and redshirting tons of player is the best way to build quality, experienced depth. that means we should only sign about 20 per year anyways. Thats how Wake Forest made it to a BCS bowl with lesser talent.
