Fedora and Staff outworked every staff in nation. They did

Fedora and Staff outworked every staff in nation. They did

Fedora and Staff did better than ANY other staff in country in my opinion when you consider the odds.
Press, reductions, negative anti-recruiting tactics based on our scandal etc etc.
We have a Top 30 national Class and a Top 5 ACC class with 17 kids and ALL the negative barriers in our way.

The Future is BRIGHT with this staff.

The future is bright. Fedora is taking Tar Heel football to new heights as we speak. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, if we can win ten games this year, (and I believe we can) recruiting is going to explode. I feel very fortunate to call myself a Tar Heel.

You can't underestimate the publicity we're getting today on ESPNU.

#18 on their board. Our logo and colors have been there all day.

Yes, what a SOLID class they were able to assemble this year, considering. Can't wait for this coming season and MANY, MANY more with Coach Fedora at the helm.

I agree. I believe you will get ten wins this year, and it will have a great impact on your recruiting. Fedora is a good coach and is taking UNC in the right direction. Next year, I think the Heels have a very good chance at winning the ACC. I know I will be pulling for them.

i think wiggins was only a 3 star? maybe thats why. also reason he probably wont get a lot of film for NFL to see of him at clemson for a few years (but hey, I understand sitting on bench watching/looking at 81,500 fans cheering cant be fun. make that 81,501) ;)

Average star rating actually went up when Wiggins decommitted. Obviously, we would have preferred him to stay on as DB is a position of need, but it is a true statement that our class is arguably better (according to Scout statistics) with him gone.

I know there are higher rated QB's going to the power schools, like Ohio State, Michigan, et al. But to me, recruiting Trubisky from the Cleveland area is a huge boost for the program. The kid was all-everything in Ohio, which is saying a lot. And from everything I've read, he can run, run and throw, and throw, in the (possible) mold of Caepernick and Russell Wilson. We shall see, of course, but landing such a talent is impressive.

One of the best things abot this class is that the coaching staff wrapped up the vast majority of its Targets/commitments early and started early on next year's class. It will play rich dividends in the future. Establish those contacts early before the bright lights and hoopla of the national recruiting circus come calling.

Good job by Coach Fedora and the staff!

Why do we always have to trash a kid when he de-commits? No one was calling him a bench warmer, or a career special teamer when he was committed to us. Smdh. Best of luck to the kid, even though I will not be pulling for his team on Saturdays.

Clemson's haul today and past depth guarantees the kid sits a LOT longer on pine than he would have at UNC where thats a UNC weak point. Its a a fact. I wish him well, BUT, he will be getting splinters.

fedora just interviewed on ESPNU.

1st thing he said was "No major surprises for us today, and thats always a good thing on NSD"

So like many have conjectured, Wiggins news was old news to FedEx or he didnt view as a major loss (like a Webb, Tribusky, Logan, Switzer, Drennon , Lawrence etc would have been)

HE's got to do better in state recruiting: "UNC awaits official football commitments Wednesday
One of North Carolina coach Larry Fedora’s biggest priorities in recruiting was convincing the top talent in the Tar Heel State to attend UNC. The results are mixed heading into today’s national signing day, which marks the first time that high school seniors can sign a National Letter of Intent to play college football. Of the seven players from North Carolina on Rivals’ Top 250 national list, just one is expected to sign with the Tar Heels — running back T.J. Logan of Greensboro. (Durham Herald-Sun) "

Give Fedora another couple years of play and when you get the scholarships back, he won't have as hard of time doing it.

Re: Fedora and Staff outworked every staff in nation. They did

According to Scout, we got two of the top 8. While there is room to improve, we have never landed much more than half even when the program has been VERY good and the regional powerhouses have been down. Look at what Mack Brown did and what Davis did his first two years (about half is the best that either did for any extended period of time. Honestly, if we had landed North, that would have been three of the top 8 which would be above average.

Look at how some of the top programs do in their own state (Florida, Ohio State, Texas, LSU, Alabama, Georgia). All of them have significant losses. So what do they do? They recruit nationally. If we never got top out of state kids like Webb, Drennon, Trubisky and Crowley, the point of keeping them home would be a lot more important. But we do...and we always have. I don't really care where they come from as long as they want to be tar heels. If we do well in the central and eastern part of NC, get our share of Tidewater VA and DC kids, and get a good share of kids from Charlotte, WNC and low country SC, we could be dominant.

I'm never one that gets too worked up over recruiting, but considering the circumstances, if the numbers from different sites are to be believed, this is one hell of job by coach Fedora and his staff. Looks like we got a solid bunch coming in.

Re: Fedora and Staff outworked every staff in nation. They did

I agree. I think getting 4-5 of the top 10 NC guys should be a goal every year, and a reasonable one too. Not getting those other guys isn't as big a concern for me as who did. Losing these guys to Ohio St, Notre Dame, LSU, (even Tenn) isn't as alarming as losing them to Clemson, State, South Carolina, Virgina Tech, etc.

As long as we continue to supplement that group with select picks from border states, the northeast, mid-Atlantic and midwest, I would agree. But there is no way that you are going to consistently lock out State from that group and those kids in the western part of the state that are closer to VT, UT, Clemson, etc. just aren't going to choose UNC simply due to an imaginary border. They are going to have the out of state school which is actually closer to home as the home school. And why shouldn't they? I'd consider Tidewater VA as much "tar heel country" as Shelby for example which is closer to Clemson and roughly equidistant to Knoxville.

So many bigtime players for us in the last 3-4 years have been from other states (Gio, Renner, TJY, Quinn, Sly, Pianalto, B. Williams, Hurst, Austin (ducking, but he was good), Searcy). Got to keep that in flux of talent going. Even programs with a lot more talent within their borders (Florida, Texas, Ohio State) look outside their borders. The reason is that sometimes your positions of need just aren't as strong in-state as they are in others.

Re: Fedora and Staff outworked every staff in nation. They did

player rankings is only an indicator of how good they are or were in high school ball...not in college, i dont care if the guy is a 1 star
player as long as he is smart, can get better, has desire, has physical abilitys ect.....i dont care if theyre from NC, SC, Georgia,
or Mexico. i trust in fedoras ability to spot talented players when he see s it. just think we have up tempo BB program and now uptempo FB
too....win or lose the heels will be exciting to watch,...after listening to Fedoras comments today i think he would be totally pissed too lose a game 10-7 lol he s like Roy, you cant play fast enough for him lol

You hit it on the head. It doesn't matter what the star rating's are sometimes. As long as a kid has the ability to learn and is willing and hungry, the sky is the limit, and I will take a kid with heart who won't quit any day, because you can mold them into the animals you want them to be.

Re: Fedora and Staff outworked every staff in nation. They did

Although I agree that star rankings are blown way out of proportion, I don't think they are meaningless. They are usually connected to the number and quality of programs that are offering scholarships to the kid. I think they are more meaningful for some positions (OL, DL, LB, RB) than other positions (QB, WR, DB).

I'm thinking they may try and bring in 2 or 3 players next January to count towards this recruiting class and then take the full 20 next year as well. (if they can under the terms of the probation/schollie reduction... can't see why they wouldn't be able to)

yeah - no more this year

next years slots are so limited - logic dictates that the staff holds these 2 for early enrolees next year that they really really want over barely wants for this year

Re: Fedora and Staff outworked every staff in nation. They did

I like what I see so far in terms of his passion and work ethic...but we gotta see results...and 8-5 with losses against Wake/Dook isn't the result I'm looking for. I realize it was year 1, so he gets a free pass. I'm gonna have to see results before I jump on the "retire at UNC" wagon. I'm optimistic, but after being burned for 15+ years, cautious optimism is justified.

This coming season, while not the end all of evaluations, will give us a good read. The "first year" card can't be used again, and our schedule is once again very favorable. Not as good as last year, but we don't play FSU or CU again this year; no top 10 opponents; and likely only 1-2 that will be ranked period (if that many). We have seasoned QB; decent OL; RBs with experience/potential; and some pretty skilled WRs. Some questions on D, but how many teams don't have "some" question marks?

No excuse in not winning 9 games with this schedule.
