Marquise Williams Not Enrolled
Marquise had a sterling career at Mallard Creek and looked plenty good to me the little he played at Carolina. I hope he sheds the VT sweatsuit (?) and re-enrolls this summer. Why would or could VT have a much better academic support program than Carolina? Buster, Butch/Larry, Roy, Mike don't care? Hard to fathom.

RE: Marquise Williams Not Enrolled
See that some posters finally got it correct on Golson, but will post this anyway from the Myrtle Beach newspaper: The North Carolina Tar Heels made Everett Golson a priority, and he made them his future Friday. The coveted Myrtle Beach quarterback, a rising senior, made his college declaration at a Friday press conference at the school, committing to the Tar Heels over scholarship offers from a bevy of major college programs. Golson, who cannot sign with North Carolina until next February, is the first player in the Class of 2011 to commit to coach Butch Davis' Tar Heels. Read more here: www.myrtlebeachonline.com/2010...l#storylink=cpyGolson de-committed to go to Notre Dame, and looks like a good decision for him. Had nothing to do with Williams.

"Academic matters" may involve more than gpa.
Privacy issues apply to all students - and that, of course, includes football players.

Re: Marquise Williams Not Enrolled
I actually saw MW play in HS -- he is a QB, period. Tremendous arm, decent runner.
If he is leaving, I hope he goes the IAA route and keeps playing. The guy who just won the SB MVP skipped from Pitt to Delaware and didn't miss a beat. Getting thrown into the VT meat grinder after sitting a year is no long term plan.

He first wanted to leave and then decided to return to UNC but some paperwork got messed up and he didn't get enrolled in time.

Re: Marquise Williams Not Enrolled
They had a pretty good relationship though, North's dad reported a few months ago that he went and spent a weekend with Marquise. I wasn't saying it would have been the deciding factor but it could have weighed in to the decision somewhat.
ETA. Also the guy who said he was behind the VT bench sporting their colors was joking right? I don't know what is up with that but there is 0% chance Fedora would release him and allow him to go to a ACC school especially not a Coastal one. --------------------------------------------- --- mjtrell wrote:

I think he may have been a little put off by how hard the staff was working to secure a commitment from a second QB in the same class. Let alone an NC kid. Kids often feel the flagship University of a state will give the home state kid first shot at a starting job. And honestly, that happens.
We also lost a kid in an earlier class from the state of Tennessee who ended up switching his commitment to SCar for the same reason. But he has since left school without contributing so perhaps that was best.
I wish Marquise the absolute best whether he is able to get back on the team or wherever he ends up. I always hope for a kid to become successful. And sometimes you have to lose what you have to realize how important it is to do your best in life.

RE: Marquise Williams Not Enrolled
I'm almost 99% sure that if you transfer without changing conferences, you have to sit out 2 years. Besides, like the poster stated above, no way Fedora let's him go to VT. And I sincerely hope the kids not dumb enough to go the Smith Center, and sit behind the hokie bench in maroon and Orange. That would explain his rumored inability to grasp the playbook.

RE: Marquise Williams Not Enrolled
he needs a good qb coach and some reps so he can settle down, and slow the game down. Might be hard to get the reps if the other qb's are stellar and stay healthy. You never know... Coker could have stage-fright and be paulus-like

Wouldn't be surprised if it is academic related. His high school tutor and guidance couselor (two different people) are neighbors and both told me before Quise even got on campus that he would struggle UNC. The counselor was trying to direct him to VT as they have (what she says) is a much better academic support program for the athletes.
I wonder if the recent decision to cut tutor assistance to the athletes has anything to do with this?

If what you are saying is true then your neighbor - the guidance counselor, should be fired.

Glad to see the "light" has been turned on regarding Golson's "rejection" by the TH coaching staff. The comments and news article cited revealing the true situation regarding his jump to ND fit with my own recollection of the matter. Events fall out the way they fall out, and every circumstance indicates that the young man is happy with his decision, which is what really counts anyway. The cited Myrtle Beach newspaper article contained two closing lines that suggest that Golson recognized the competition he was facing at Chapel Hill and played strongly in his decision to commit to ND.

Re: Marquise Williams Not Enrolled
Did you miss the entire post where I detailed how Golson was the FIRST commit of the class and that we "constructively" passed him over because we weren't satisfied with him and showed a clear preference to MW? Golson was committed from the get-go and had no doubt about his loyalty while our staff was going on a goose chase to secure MW who was making them practically beg. Golson saw the painting on the wall and left.

True about him being perfectly happy where he is. Just frustrating because IMO he was always the better prospect and we discarded him because of the pro-style offense and his height in favor of MW. Now, we have a perfect offense for him and MW isn't currently enrolled (yes, I realize he plans to re-enroll). Once again, I know that hindsight is 20/20, just a frustrating situation.

Either every else here is a teen-ager, or more senile than me.
Can't believe that no one has mentioned that Darian Durant was THIS CLOSE to transferring to SC State before getting talked out of it by Our Coach John, in probably his signature coaching performance.

Re: Marquise Williams Not Enrolled
He didn't play more because our starter was much better and played like it.
I hope the speculation that the younger guys have proven to be too much competition for him is true. That can only be good news for us.
I suspect it could have had an impact on North's decision to pick UT. If so, I hope it was only because MG wasn't going to be a Heel and not some ear bending out of anger.
I Wish MG the best of luck with whatever he chooses to do.

PASSING GP Effic Cmp-Att-Int PctYardsTD Long Avg/G Marquise Williams 9 141.0 10-17-0 58.8 127 1 39 14.1
He was 10-17, 12.7 yards per throw average. Not exactly enough data to claim that he wasn't accurate. He was put in a few times to run, taking a direct snap with no fakes to the RB and still ran very well. (6.4 yds/carry, a fraction behind Gio). Would like to see him get a few series in the regular offense before writing him off. . .

Regarding Golson -
Nobody has mentioned it yet, but wasn't basketball somehow involved in the equation?
Wasn't Roy semi-interested in Golson's desire to play both sports?

That's a touchy subject, but the answer is "yes" to both questions. I don't know if that impacted Golson's decision at all, but it could have. I don't think the preferred walk-on to play bb for UNC was still there when Golson decided to go to ND instead.

Re: Marquise Williams Not Enrolled
Quise is not enrolled this semester due to academic issues. I do not know if poor grades factored into his suspension, but I do know for certain that he had an honor code violation and that is one reason why he is not currently enrolled. I have also heard lots of talk that Williams has in no way secured the starting position once Renner has graduated. Coker looks very comfortable in the pocket and almost beat him out this season. Williams can run the ball well, but he cannot consistently throw the ball well. And don't count out Tribusky, he is our QB for the future. All of this comes from reliable sources and expect Williams to be back with the team this summer. His career at UNC is not over yet.
