Athletes required to pay for tutors?

www.dailytarheel.com/article/2013/01/510b45853d306

This is really unbelievable. Any other major university in this country requiring athletes to pay for tutors? That is part of the deal when you receive a scholarship. In exchange for all the time you spend practicing, traveling, and playing games, you almost assuredly need some extra help staying on top of the classwork.

This university has shown for 3 years now to have no backbone!

What a dumb idea. I cannot believe that one upshot from the NCAA investigation is less academic support. That's just crazy. Give the student athletes the support they need to make the grade in the classroom.

Do traditional students pay for their own tutoring?

You can but your don't have to, if you want to ask questions there are usually avenues open like the professor's office hours and free tutoring on campus such as the writing center and other labs. The issue isn't the cost, its that often athletes have time constraints that are required for them to be a student.

Your scholarship is only valid so long as you are on an athletic team and the scholarships aren't guaranteed beyond one year. This kind of seems like it's a system where the only way to stay in school is stay competitive on an athletic team, and the amount of time and effort needed to stay competitive on these teams likely takes away from some academic opportunities athletes may have. I mean at the very least they have 20hr of practice a week including traveling, that has to make it more difficult to get to these meetings.

regular students may hire other students and pay them for tutoring .... my step daughter was a chemistry tutor - for which she was paid by the other student .....

Athletes are already at a disadvantage because they have so much practice and working out. The least they could do is make sure they have tutors.

By disadvantage I mean if you are just a student after class you can go study then the rest of your day is free. Football players have class, practice, meetings, and individual workout If an athlete gets a B and a regular student takes the same class and gets a B, the athlete is probably a far superior student.

The larger the organization, the the more rigid the rules. Innovation and creative solutions not welcome.
Increasing the academic support budget, while good pr, does not hide the fact that the core mission is lessened. This was not well thought out.

Now, do coaches really recruit by inferring athletes will have 1 on 1 tutoring should they desire it ?

‏@Kburney3
Well there went the football program @ UNC. kids don't have money to pay for tutoring. tutoring was the only thing that keeps athlete at UNC

@Kburney3
And I say football program because they have the most athletes that's going to suffer from that crap

Reading the article, it seems the football team is pulling free tutors away from athletes in other sports. Doesn't seem to imply that football players are being forced to pay outside tutors. Did I miss something?

Since they will begin getting checks, then they should pay for Tudors, and for that matter do away with scholarships.
