If it were me --- in lieu of a raise this year I would give each of them a nicely framed autographed picture of Gio crossing the goal line.

I knew a lot of people like your wife's cousin when I was at UNC. We use to refer to them as professional students who were trying to find themselves.

I never saw the virtue in being well rounded with a liberal arts degree and still having to bum money off of my parents after 4 years of college. I never saw the point of getting a four year degree that would land me a job waiting tables or working the drive thru at Burger King.

So being the "knuckle dragger" that I am; I got a B.S. in Math-Computer Science at UNC; had a job offer before I graduated; and never had to ask my parents for a dime after graduation day. I think my father was more proud about that than the actual degree I earned.

I knew a bunch of people at UNC who only needed 4 years of undergraduate work to find gainful employment. But since we majored in things like Math, Chemistry, Physics, Business, Accounting and Nursing; I guess we were just "knuckle draggers" who missed a golden opportunity for getting well rounded liberal arts degree. (And missed the chance to whine about being broke for the rest of our lives.)

It's a free country. Well at least for now it is.

You can major in whatever you want and schools can offer whatever degrees they want to. But the article makes valid points. Life is about choices. And the world doesn't want to hear you whine if you make the wrong ones.

My wife's cousin's daughter followed that recommended path. She went to UNC and got a double major in Italian and Psychology. I think she was there about 5 years getting her degree. After graduation, she moved (most likely had her parents move her) to Denver to further contemplate what she wanted to do with her life. After about a year trying to find jobs waiting tables, she had her parents move her back to NC.

By then, I am not sure she had discovered what she wanted to pursue, but it had been revealed to her that she needed to go back to college to pursue a degree program that would allow her to get a job. She went back to UNC in an Accounting graduate program, and now has a job as a CPA with a large accounting firm. Not bad for 7 or so years in college.

Neither McCrory, Pope, Stam and the various other Republican knuckle-draggers in the Lege, as well as most of the Democrats whose corrupt stewardship allowed those bozos to waltz into power, cares one whit about the state of education in N.C. As one poster noted earlier, were that the case, they would be falling over themselves to fund K-12.

This is all about money, ideology, and power.

Did you happen to notice when the discussion turned to taxes, and the Republican ALEC-driven proposal to cut the corporate rates and individual rates at the high end to be offset by a sales tax increase was floated? What did Pope do? He balked. Why? His fortune is in retail, dummy. Follow the money, and the ideology.

Well stated unc4life. I couldn't have said it better.

You can always find folks that don't make it in any major. I'm absolutely certain that lots of math majors don't find jobs and sponge off their parents. My question to you would be why are so sure having a liberal arts education has no virtue? Are you sure it wouldn't have helped you? I did both... got a great liberal arts background at UNC and went to graduate school in architecture. You probably find it strange, but my "well-rounded" education helped me immensely in my graduate studies, because it helped me to think on multiple levels and include all kinds of critical cultural issues in my design work, and has no doubt made me a better professional.

Perhaps if you had taken greater advantage of the opportunities afforded to study things beyond your self-limited scope, you'd be less dismissive of it and less inclined to make insecure, narrow-minded proclamations against it.

RE: Is the UNC witch hunt about to spread ?

Let us assume that McCrory,Pope,et.al are truly interested in focusing on improving educational performance in academic areas outside liberal arts.

If this is the case why criticize UNC ? Why not criticize ncst ?

UNC programs are ranked higher than ncst in math, computer science, chemistry, physics, biological sciences, and biological engineering.

The medical school, nursing school, school of public health, law school, and business school are all at the top in rankings and enjoy an outstanding reputation nationally and world wide.

UNC is a priceless gem that should be treasured and supported by our state leaders because it is a great university in all aspects, not just in liberal arts education(although it excels in that,as well).

Who said anything about duplicate programs? I'm saying move it to UNC. And close the medical school at ECU while you are at it.

They eliminated duplicate programs back then, I just don't see them creating a duplicate program now.

Simply that we used to have one. It's now in Raleigh.

This is about money. The rising costs in education result in tax increases and subject to us to defaults on loans in future years. Kids are coming out of school with 50K+ in debt Supply and demand will settle this debate.

Move to ZZL if appropriate.

Say it all you want to, it's not going to happen. Need to move on.

RE: Is the UNC witch hunt about to spread ?

I know, but I do think it a bit hypocritical. If they want to elevate engineering education in NC, move the program to Chapel Hill. If not, then don't complain about liberal arts not being a good use of the taxpayers' dollars.
