Scholarship Lost
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The NCAA reduced North Carolina’s scholarship total by 15 over three years as a part of the University’s sanctions last March. A unique situation, however, has further reduced UNC’s scholarship count by one more for the 2013 class, according to team sources, which will sign next Wednesday. northcarolina.scout.com/2/1262128.html

RE: Scholarship Lost
It will be a bright, sunny day, when UNC, and all other academic institutions, can tell the NCAA to go pound sand. F the ncaa.

Re: Scholarship Lost
So basically, if we sign more than 19 we know there is going to be somebody who doesn't enroll when August rolls around. Could mean the staff doesn't offer Mcgill, only goes after North to fill out the rest of the class. We'll see...

Re: Scholarship Lost
Not sure I understand how a track sholarship can translate to a football scholarship (thought track scholly's were all partial). Was he offered a football scholarship?

Re: Scholarship Lost
So the player came to UNC on a track scholarship, was recruited for track and UNC loses a scholly because he played 6 games? Seems like a load of crap to me. Meanwhile, Texas A&M is allowed 34 commit?

Re: Scholarship Lost
Its been a rule for a long time. If someone plays football and any other sport on scholarship, it must be counted towards the football allotment. The Bear Bryant rule. He would sign players just to keep them from going to other schools. Next thing you know he had 150 players on the football team... some with scholarships from other sports at Alabama.

Re: Scholarship Lost
Agree, this rule actually makes sense. Somehow, the N&O will find a way to make it look like UNC is "up to its old ways" again.

Re: Scholarship Lost
The signing limits still apply no matter how many commits a school has.

Folderol and poppycock. Congressional legislation is easier to understand than this convoluted restriction.

RE: Scholarship Lost
at some point I thought athletes from other sports could NOT count as a football scholly if they had participated for a full year in their other sport without participating in football during that time. Obviously there is some wrinkle surrounding whether or not the player was ever recruited by schools as a football player.

We have the biggest bunch of cowards ever interfacing with these NCAA fascists. Just sad.

Re: Scholarship Lost
There was an IC story on this when Smith joined the team how "brilliant" it was to bring Smith over because it WOULD NOT count as a football scholly. Fedora talked openly about how this WOULD NOT count as a football scholly. Talking heads on IC talked about how this was great news because, under NCAA rules, it WOULD NOT count as a football scholly.
Someone needs to be fired. Period.

Re: Scholarship Lost
Sounds like a misinterpretation of the rules by UNC officials. Costly mistake.

Re: Scholarship Lost
Like P1967 I thought there was a time frame involve. I thought if a kid played 2yrs in another sport they could play football and it wouldn't count against football ships as long as the kid continued to make the other sport the primary. I also thought there was something about the kid not being a football recruit by that school was also somehow thrown in there.

Did he come to Chapel Hill on any of the recruiting trips with the other Northwestern recruits?

Maybe the bad info came from the compliance person who left last fall. Already terminated employment. :-)

Re: Scholarship Lost
This is just sorry work by all parties involved, sorry research by the reporter, and sorry work by the compliance office. I even knew that this would not fly. Its been a rule for years. I wonder if the NCAA mistakenly told UNC that his involvement would not count against the football scholly allotment?

RE: Scholarship Lost
It's my guess that Fedora is going to have the program is really good shape by the time the ncaa restrictions expire, and 5 additional scholarships is going to seem like pennies from heaven after this mess.
