Illinois 2010 Defensive staff

Illinois 2010 Defensive staff

It sounds like UNC will be hiring Ron West to fill the one remaining coaching spot. That will give us the entire defensive staff from Illinois during their best years defensively. I hope they have the same success here.

Link? Would be good news if true; all accounts have been that he's a good one.

Did they run a 4-2-5?

I hope you're right. That D was the reason Illinois a had good season that year. I'm not expecting our D too be as good as them this year, but I do think us as fans should expect a decent jump.

Well not to point out the obvious and trying hard not to be too much of a smart @## but you, me and 9 other guys off this board may have a better year than our d from last year. A decent jump should get us to the bottom of the NCAA statistics.

That might be true had we BEEN at the bottom of the NCAA statistics. But we weren't. If you had stuck to passing yards, maybe so. But not otherwise:

Rushing Defense #40
Passing Defense #81
Pass efficiency Defense #38
Scoring Defense #53
Turnovers gained T #36
Total Defense #56

Granted these are not "great" rankings, but with 120 FBS teams, we were far from "the bottom of the NCAA statistics".

Re: Illinois 2010 Defensive staff

Yes, but those stats were inflated by shutting out Elon and Idaho, as well as man handling East Carolina. As far as performance, we were in the bottom third, maybe bottom quarter of the country in defense. If we can play middle of the country defense, with our offense, we could have a great year next season.

Oh cmon. Throw out Elon and Idaho and tell me where the numbers land.

I know horrible defense when I see it. We were downright helpless at times against our peers -- and helpless is a synonym for defenseless.

If you throw out Elon and Idaho, then you would have to throw out two games from the other 120 teams. Be realistic. Our defense had issues last year, but were far from being the worst in the NCAA. That statement is ridiculous.

I have two bad knees and I'm out of shape but at my weight I could be a run-stuffer.

Our defense was bad at time last season, but it spent a lot of time on the field due to our up-tempo, quick-strike offense. And our stats will suffered accordingly.

Re: Illinois 2010 Defensive staff

The most meaningful measure is how well the D performed against ACC opponents, specifically those in Carolina's division. I don't have those stats but see the post today on Carolina's report card grades for 2012 - Offense = B, Defense= C.

An improvement on both sides of the ball may mean winning the division again. And this time, they get to play for the championship.

Re: Illinois 2010 Defensive staff

If you want to play Big Boy football then no you don't have to throw out the others. If you really want to do this then you need to also add the fact that weak and dook drove the ball on us at the end of the game to win it and there wasn't anything we could do about it. That is not to mention that 68 that Ga. Tech. hung on us and the fact that we made a UM linebacker look like a Heisman Trophy candidate. I don't believe that is big boy defense. Look we stunk as a defense and I know the guys are trying but the truth is the truth.

Exactly. If we are adjusting our own arbitrarily then it has to be done for everyone else.

Eh, easier to just say something and hope it sticks. Throw in a word like "seems" or "were really" and its like the gospel truth.
