RE: Conference Realignment: Is Basketball Pushing UNC to the SEC
Could be but a lot of folks thought the LHN would be a shoo-in for distribution because of their ESPN connection, how has that worked out?

I'm no expert, but the way the Big Ten makes money with its Big Ten Network Tax is blacking out UMd and Rutgers on BTN until the cable providers agree to move it to first tier and pay five times the carriage (presumably under pressure from the dozens of outraged fans of each school). Of course, most people in New Jersey and Maryland could care less about the Big Ten but will be forced to pay the tax if they want other first-tier cable. If a la carte catches on, there won't be bundled channels that you are forced to pay for, which is what Delaney is doing, forcing people to pay for BTN that do not want it, buy essentially extorting the cable providers in NJ and MD by blacking out games until moved to first tier (Delaney already said this is what they are doing). It remains to be see if this plot will even work, but if a la carte becomes the norm it certainly pulls the rug out from underneath the Big Ten Network Tax, people will just buy the channels they want.

Why couldnt you package them together for a fair price? That would be a very smart move. You sell products by advertising. Huge untapped college football market in New York/Jersey market. Especially if The B1G can lure Notre Dame in. Package Yankee baseball Rutgers and Notre Dame along with B1G football. Advertise a little B1G football during Yankee games. The business model to get people to except change is in increments. Thats probably how it will be handled, slowly. This was the topic that was discussed on our board months ago as what is really driving expansion. Forget the millions. Follow the billions. By the way I am not saying this is the right thing to do. there is no right in greed.

In theory, you could package items together. But, B1G doesn't have ND to add to the package and if you package a product together that people largely do not want with a product that people do want, then the product that people do not want would likely have to be discounted to make it attractive enough to minimize the backlash from YES fans. Otherwise, the YES fans are more likely to view the B1G in a negative nasty light that could do more harm than good. IMHO

They will sell Rutgers and Notre dame thus selling the B1G. Bringing some of the ACC for basketball would help programming. You guys? I am just a spectator same as you. Deal with it? Deal with what? The only thing I am dealing with is people like you who want to divide people into little groups so you have someone to hate. I am a college football fan discussing with other college fans things that could very well affect us all. I am not attacking you or anybody else. Read your own posts. Where is all that hate coming from?

Phat, you seem to have the impression that ND has no option except to join the B1G. ND has many options: staying independent, staying with a weakened ACC, joining any conference they want (Big12, PAC 12, or anyone else) as a partial member (except the SEC cause we don't play favorites).
Not meant to be insulting, but from the outside looking in on the whole B1G/ND thing it's quite hilarious. It reminds me of the guy who asks a hot girl out and when she says no, he starts stalking her.
If your theory is true and the B1G grabbed Rutgers & Maryland for the ultimate goal of forcing ND into a shotgun wedding, the B1G is gonna look awfully stupid if they don't get the girl.

Basically what I am saying is Delaney/B1G face may be on the bus but Fox and company IMHO our driving or at the very least our helping it along. Advertisers want there commercials on live sporting events. people tend not to watch live television as much anymore. people our recording it and ff through the commercials. You know how much a commercial costs tonight at the superbowl? I think the Money wants to push college football using NFL plan for playoffs divisional games ETC. Even college basketball has room for growth. Anybody watch Nc vs Ncst last week? I went to the bar and getting a seat was tough. Notre Dame is weighing its options. And paying a lot of attention to what is going on right now. Just like everybody else.

If the Dame is being forced into marriage rather than a willing partner perhaps the Big 10 should poach KY first?

CalBay, I had no idea that anyone this stupid would have access to the internet. Is your access paid for out of some ADA program?

IMHO
--------------------------------------------- The goal is Notre Dame for football. Why else would they take Rutgers except for the population. They will sell Rutgers and Notre dame thus selling the B1G. Bringing some of the ACC for basketball would help programming. Fox wants 1 to 3 sports channels and needs programming to compete with Espin. Thus follow the billions.

If the Dame is being forced into marriage rather than a willing partner perhaps the Big 10 should poach KY first?
--------------------------------------------- Haha, yeah I guess the Dame played liked a girl in the Championship game. Ugh huh! UGA was 5 yards away from stomping ND and winning the BCS! That one is gonna hurt for a long time.
