Ron West (Possible Coaching Assistant?)
Anyone know anything about Mr. Ron West of Arizona State? @coachingsearch:Don't be surprised if Larry Fedora lures Arizona State assistant Ron West to Chapel Hill. t.co/o72P3H1J

He's got closer ties to Vic than coach Fed. Worked with VicK at Illinois and Clemson.

Sounds like a good coach but I would like to see some younger guys hired.

I'd like the best man for the job to get hired

Re: Ron West (Possible Coaching Assistant?)
Yeah that's nice but all things being equal coaching wise I do think hiring a younger, African-american coach would be preferable. I know that may sound ridiculous to some but honestly it does help a lot with recruiting given the players we go after, and with Adams gone I believe Randy Jordan is the only major position coach who is black.

RE: Ron West (Possible Coaching Assistant?)
Part of me would like a younger Walt Bell type hire but West would be a strong hire. Him and Vic have put together a top 10 defense and I have read he is a good recruiter. Hope it's him.

Re: Ron West (Possible Coaching Assistant?)
I have no issue acknowledging the benefits of such a hire. However, it has to be about the man/coach, not the age and ethnicity.
Wouldn't surprise me if we hired Ron West and Keith Gilmore.

I would rather hire Ron White.
He could keep the locker room loose with the Tater jokes and bourbon!!!

Re: Ron West (Possible Coaching Assistant?)
I don't think we can offer enough to get West based on the ic radio show.
Sounds like Gilmore and McCollum would be the best two, or perhaps Gilmore and Hargreaves. Bottom line, I hope by default Gilmore is one of two hired.

Re: Ron West (Possible Coaching Assistant?)
Dumbest thing I have read on here in a long time. Hiring someone just because he is black makes absolutely ZERO sense.

Re: Ron West (Possible Coaching Assistant?)
I made the same mistake you just did when I first read it.
We're not hiring anyone "just because he is black". Thats not what he said.

Re: Ron West (Possible Coaching Assistant?)
Thanks Jheiser3. I added "all things being equal coaching wise" meaning I don't want just anyone because they're black, they have to be able to be add a lot coaching wise at their position. I want a great D-line coach here but we also need a great recruiter. Just in terms of recruiting I think it helps if you have a couple guys on your staff who can identify with the recruits we go after better culture/background wise. It does sometimes make a difference in how comfortable kids feel.

Re: Ron West (Possible Coaching Assistant?)
Still dont buy it. Race shouldnt come into the equation at all.
I didnt misread what you wrote, I just do not agree. There has to come a point when people stop looking at color. If you had 2 coaches that were equally qualified, 1 white and 1 black, and Fedora had to choose, it should be based on who he feels the most comfortable around. Not "Im gonna go with the black guy because recruits will react to him better." the cycle of that mentality has to change. All it is doing to handing that mindset down to the next generation.

Re: Ron West (Possible Coaching Assistant?)
Do you agree or disagree that from a recruiting perspective alone, race could make a positive impact considering the majority of recruits are not white?
Follow-up question: do you agree that recruiting is kinda important.

^Or if you are a woman being recruited into a program - med school, or some business-firm. If the panel of people recruiting you are entirely male vs mixed, which might make you feel more comfortable? - think comfort zones, role models, etc....

Re: Ron West (Possible Coaching Assistant?)
1.Sure, I think race could make a small difference in recruiting. My point is when will the mind set change of I feel more comfortable around a certain race over another.
I am white, and I can tell you with 100% certainty, if I was being recruited it would not matter 1 way or the other the color of the recruiter sitting across the table from me.
Yes recruiting is important.
Im sure I am alone on this topic and that is okay, but I am sick and tired of hearing race always brought up and how it affects things. There comes a time when people need to try and change it instead of always going along with the program. --------------------------------------------- --- gregh1 wrote:

Re: Ron West (Possible Coaching Assistant?)
It would be nice if that mindset would change.
But in reality it won't happen between now and signing day. Or even now and NEXT signing day.
Recruits all across the country have talked about the bond they have developed with coaches of the same color for years.
Of course, recruits all across the country have ALSO talked about the bond they have developed with coaches who weren't the same color for years.
One day, the color of one's skin won't matter. But that day ain't today.

It's not going to ever change as long as people go out of their way to continue to emphasize it.

Didnt say it was, but you have to start somewhere in order for it to change. --------------------------------------------- --- jimmydaheel wrote:

Re: Ron West (Possible Coaching Assistant?)
You are focusing on the wrong part of the equation. People "going out of their way" which no one actually does, is the consequence, not the antecedent.
