Not real impressed with GaTech's new AD

Your big problem is football attendance and you hire the guy from Xavier, a non-football, private school? Odd.

Actually taking a guy from a school that doesnt have football is kind of odd...Especially when football in Division 1 is such a big money maker.. I could see taking one from a low tier Division 1 team.. but not from a school that doesnt have one at all..Why not take one from LaSalle..

So a division one school should never hire a coach that didn't play division one football..

The right guys will know what to do

Um, there's a big difference between a guy who didn't play football and a guy who was AD at a school that did not have a football program.

Reading comprehension 101.

OBX clearly you are looking for some kind of war of the words here.Clearly you misread what I said. Taking an A.D. from a school who has never ran a division 1 football program( heck even FCS) to run your program which is division 1 and is in a BCS conference is odd. That is all I have said on the matter. I dont know you but are you always this standoffish?

I think you're overestimating the importance of a specific sport experience for an AD.

RE: Not real impressed with GaTech's new AD

Bobinski is widely considered one of the top Div. 1 ADs in the country. I believe he is chairman of this Year's NCAA basketball tournament. And under his watch, XU head coaches included Thad Motta (now at OSU), the late Skip Prosser and Sean Miller (Zona). He is known for his management skills and excellent relations with the sports media. Should be a great addition at GTech.

I thought you were going to tell me he was chosen from the annoying insects who represent GT on IC. That wouldn't have been impressive.

Maybe Buttinski will do a'ight.

Re: Not real impressed with GaTech's new AD

What is up with these Tech people? They "swarm" our board every single time their school is mentioned, even if it is not in a derogatory or standoffish way. Do they just have people who's job it is to sit around scouring the internet for any mention of GT, Tech, Paula, PJ, second school of GA, UGA's little brother, HS style offense, third place in the Coastal, etc? I mean, we just start a thread regarding their AD's inexperience at running an athletic program that has ever had any semblance of a football program and here they come!

None of those names have anything to do with football, you know, the sport that drives college athletics and the TOPIC OF THIS MESSAGE BOARD. Gosh, I thought you Tech people were supposed to analytical and smart.

Obviously, GT should have polled this board before making their selection.

The man did an excellent job at his previous school. Marketing, PR, HR all are hardly one sport specific and are very important parts of an AD's job.

Claiming that an AD HAS to have experience in one particular sport is simply ridiculous.

Right, cuz that guy in DC who had no experience but great marketing and PR is doing a bang up job, right? Football drives college athletics. This ain't '53, bball doesn't make the world go round anymore.

What's next...a recoomendation for DB since HE was an AD at a Div 1 football school?

Nothing like a specious argument made by someone without a clue...have fun.

Earl Weaver never played in the majors, what was Baltimore thinking.

Re: Not real impressed with GaTech's new AD

Wow. Touchy crowd.

Here's the deal from down here on the ground in ATL: GaTech sports are slowly dying from disinterest. Alums tell me that almost monthly.

First, the competition from pro sports is immense. Not Boston or LA, but absolutely not Cincy either. Plus Tech does not stand at the top of Catholic school feeder system that guarantees both fervent fans and willing donors.

Tech has been very smart has invested greatly in facilities a ton, often at very low cost due to low interest rates and hungry builders. The fundamentals LOOK sound, but the passion is lacking. And you can only build the passion by winning home football games against rivals.

Unfortunately the ACC is sending Pitt and Cuse down to the ATL, for a home slate that goes something like Elon, VPI, UNC, Pitt, Cuse, Ala A&M, UGa.

If Bobby Dodd is full of Bulldog red for that last game, Bobinski will get a quick lesson on the enormity of the task ahead of him.

Xavier is tiny. When I went to visit during my senior year of high school it was essentially about the same size as a large high school. It's a little bigger now but we're still talking about 4000 or so undergraduates. I'm surprised that the position at GT is the next level up from Xavier.

Yeah, but Xavier has a powerhouse football program. Wait, nm...

I wouldn't call it standoffish. It's pretty much in your face.

The real point of this whole thread....Carolina fans should act with more class, but certain ones will try to run down every other school for no reason other than personal feeling toward such school.

We have the perfect AD, they don't be happy about that.

You sound like a personal friend of Bubba who is upset that someone thinks the job he helped line up for a friend might be a bad fit.

The intent of thread was not to run anything down, but to explore a weak link in the ACC armor, GT.

GT is in transition. It just got rid of its building management major, which was sort of a general contractor gold card and one of its last "mud flap" majors (or so I'm told).

The previous admin dealt with the move to a highly specialized institution by treating GT as a service academy, hence PJ. But higher up the foodchain the sought after model is Stanford, which they think they can get to by....being like ND.

I don't blame NDers like Bubba and Bob-ski for thinking that sounds reasonable, doable, and desirable. But the rest of us can and should wonder out loud about it.

I realize that AD responsibilities is about marketing and such but to have someone who has never ran or marketed for any football program let alone a major one is just plain odd..

The guy could very well do a bang up job but to come to a high profile job (which Tech should still be considered) since they have a national title... it just makes me wonder thats all.

Mike was at Akron as AD before taking over at Xavier and also has worked at Navy and Notre Dame. He's been around football plenty and has the skills to do a good job.
