Brian Baker ?

Brian Baker ?

It seems Dallas Cowboys will be letting Brian Baker go. Would Brian Baker be a good defensive fit for us? Would he even be welcomed here after he was hired and then left?

Not long after it was announced Rod Marinelli won’t be returning to the Bears, his name surfaced here with the Cowboys, especially with his ties to new defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin. Marinelli worked 10 seasons with Kiffin in Tampa Bay, specializing in the “Tampa 2” scheme. Marinelli has been the defensive coordinator for the Bears since 2009, after a three-year stint as the Lions head coach.

As of late Thursday evening, the Cowboys were still working on the final touches of bringing in Marinelli as defensive line coach.

That move signals a change for defensive line coach Brian Baker, who has been here the past two seasons. Whether or not Marinelli joins the staff, Baker isn’t expected to return next season.

Why would we want a Cowboys reject?

Well, he was part of the staff briefly but wasn't part of that craziness. He can coach defense. I am not sure about his ability to recruit but I do recall him visiting some important recruits during his brief stint. Anyway, it was just a question.

He was the guy we had hired in hopes of landing Clowney right?

That was the game plan, IIRC.

He was the one that landed Simmons and when he left so did Simmons. The guy is a good DL coach but we have a good young DL coach in Deke Adams so we really dont need him.

Am I missing something here...we have a good DL coach...maybe this is true(maybe) but I did not see a lot of good plays from the DL last season. Why is Deke Adams considered a good DL coach.

I am not saying that UNC should go after Baker.

Re: Brian Baker ?

If Baker was brought on, he would have to coach LBs. Adams is one of the best college DL coaches/recruiters in the country.

If it's me, I'm passing and looking for another option.

Re: Brian Baker ?

Deke is a helluva coach and he has been rated as a top recruiter in the ACC for the last two years.

We were thin on DL last year, and when we lost Jackson to that chop block against Duke we had a hard time recovering. Our problems on D last year were to being thin on depth, too much youth, and having to adjust to a new scheme. Deke's DL was tops in CUSA when he was there, and among the best in the nation against the run.

Look at USM's 2011 defense if you want to see what this staff can produce given time to develop talent.

Re: Brian Baker ?

IIRC, that was the original thought but it was later determined he played on role in that recruitment.
