Manti Te'o Bizarre Story

Manti Te'o Bizarre Story

It's not directly UNC related, but I still remember when he was in high school and wishing he could play for us. Apparently the story about his girlfriend that died at the beginning of the season was all a hoax. This one of the most bizarre sports stories I can remember. Hello 30 for 30

Re: Manti Te'o Bizarre Story

Yes it's amazing to look at how this story has taken off today, ever media outlet is devoting time and resources to this. I reserve my judgement on this and how this story was allowed to go this far without someone checking on it.
I heard Notre Dame has released a statement on this bizarre story. ESPN went full bore on this story on its various broadcast during the season. It's so easy these days to not double check ones sources with all this social media,
Looks like someone at Dead Spin may have pulled a fast one here. Rule one that was drilled into me in my journalism & RTVMP classes at Carolina .....don't go with a story unless you have two sources at least. It's a rule that has proved its weight in gold in my time in broadcast journalism. Odd story indeed..... More to come !

Verify & Verify again !!!

I heard Dr Wesley Wallace say this time and time again in my RTVMP classes!

It looks like Deadspin did their HW on this. Also seen that one person close to it said he is 80% sure Te'o was in on it with all the publicity in mind.

On another note, I got a real hankering for some cougar. Go figure...

It's hard to know what to believe really happened. If he was a true victim, what an embarrassing thing to go through. If he was in on it, that's just pathological lying, and I'd never put him on my team.

Well at this point, he's either nearly impossibly naive, a scheming opportunist, or he had something he needed to hide. We will see in time. ND's press conference defied all logic, in my view.

RE: Manti Te'o Bizarre Story

This is what I can't figure out. If you're the star middle linebacker at Notre Dame, one of the biggest football schools in America, why do you have to go online to find a girlfriend? This whole thing smells. The more I read, the more I believe it to be a publicity stunt. And man, it takes balls to.screw with karma like that.

It took ESPN a hour and 30 minutes to put this on Sportscenter. If it was Cam Newton, the minute it was released it would be on ESPN.

Yes. That is the only way to describe it.

Absolutely inexcusable for the media to not have found about this until now. Journalism is dead.

Now that brings back memories. My dad introduced me to Dr. Wesley Wallace when I was an incoming freshman in 1964. They were personal friends, and Dr. Wallace served as a sounding board for this out-of-state kid. Hate that I never took any of his classes.

No. Every other media outlet failed. An ESPN reporter just said that he was doing a story on the girlfriend, but couldn't find an obituary, accident report in the media or a photo. Te'o told him to back off, and he did. Without Deadspin's reporting, Notre Dame would still be hiding this.

unfortunately the media doesnt look for facts or try to do anything...They have a headline and fit everything to promote that...Teo's story was just more hype for him...they didnt care about the facts...and now that Notre Dame was in the NCG, they'll rip them to shreds.....funny how the two things the press loves are democrats and the SEC.....

I think Te'o was in on it. He wanted to win the Heisman with the sympathy void. He is a sick man. The story he came up with was completely BS.

RE: Manti Te'o Bizarre Story

This is just more work of a corrupt media that not only doesn't do their job (Verify EVERYTHING and search for TRUTH), but no longer even KNOWS what their job actually is. They think they are all freelance publicits taking on whomever they like as their own personal project to either inflate or destroy at their whimzy.

The media should have known this story was BS about 15 mins after it first came out of his mouth. DO YOUR FRIGGIN JOB! If you beleive even 25% of what you read or hear reported in the media, you are nothing but a stupid sheep...

I bet you that the Heisman people are patting themselves on the back and several of them let out a "whew" when they heard this. They got lucky on this one. Johnny football is probably getting free stuff and partying it up right now.

Re: Manti Te'o Bizarre Story

This is a damning and accurate summation of the way sports media handled the story, and sportswriting in general:

www.slate.com/articles/sports/..._the_notre.html

SI has long been guilty of this-they write hagiography instead of facts b/c that's what the sports public generally wants. How many articles have we read that 'explain' why a guy is a jacka**? Or how he's changed, been redeemed, or is a lot more nuanced than he seems. One need only look at the thread on here with some media soaked fans defending poor, misunderstood Ray Lewis, who is one of the all time examples of sports media(and thus fan) worship happily overlooking the uncomfortable, darker truth.

And conversely, if he's a 'good' guy, they go full bore in that direction to the point of making them Disney characters, a la the media treatment of Te'o.

Re: Manti Te'o Bizarre Story

Absolutely amazing. So, in my opinion, and I know I'm casting judgment, there is no way that Manti could not have been in on it. Simply no way, but guess what, if he wanted to prove the story was true from his perspective and he was simply an idiot duped for a year, he could easily do it. He won't though and that will affirm his "guilt" in the court of public opinion (no evidence an actual crime was committed unless financial donations were made to a person claiming to be family of the girl).
