Is Gene Chizik the worst coach in college football history to win a national title? Take away the "Cam Newton" season and his career record is 24-38 and his career in-conference record is 9-31.

If he's not, he's pretty darn close. In his defense, he wasn't left with much at Iowa State. He also went 8-5 twice in the always grueling SEC. Even Urban Meyer went 8-5 one year at Florida. Les Miles went 8-5 in his 4th year at LSU.

But none of them has as bad of a year as Chizik did last year. It got out of control real quick.

you are probably correct...

but in every field there are anomalies like this...

not trying to beat a dead horse, but there are folks (myself included), who think that if Vince Young had not come along a certain coach, not so far from retirement, would not have his MNC...

he had to fire his OC just a handful of years later, he was doing so poorly...

and now that their traditional chief rival has moved to the SEC, with spectacular results, there are serious worries they might not remain #1 in their own state anymore...

the right player can make a huge difference in one season, if there is some talent in the supporting cast...
