Prediction - The ACC Will Be The First Conference To 20 Teams?

Prediction - The ACC Will Be The First Conference To 20 Teams?

The race to form the first “Super Conference” is heating up and it looks like a race between the Big Ten and ACC at this point. Both will expand to 14 teams next season, the same number as the SEC but with a less strenuous screening process for new applicants. Neither has shown any hesitation to pick the bones of the Big East.

The ACC, however, appears to be in a better position to poach the remaining members if the Big East finally bites the dust. They are already getting Syracuse, Louisville and the Pitt Panthers from the Big East and the Cincinnati Bearcats and Connecticut Huskies have openly campaigned for an invitation. That would leave the Temple Owls and South Florida Bulls, which would both fit nicely into the geography of the ACC.

That would but the ACC up to 18 teams. If they were somehow able to convince the Notre Dame Fighting Irish to drop the “partial” football member tag and join up full-time (unlikely without HUGE concessions by the conference), they would just one short of the 20-team plateau. Perhaps new Big East members such as the Navy Midshipmen or the Central Florida Knights could be persuaded and make the first super-conference complete.

Cincinnati, UConn, USF, UCF, Navy, and Temple?!

Please god no. That would suck.

The ACC is not going to go past 14 teams without Notre Dame joining full time. You can count on that.

There is nobody else from the Big East worth taking. To hell with UConn. I hope they freaking get left out of the big boy leagues altogether. Besides, none of our football schools (FSU, CU, GT, VT) will vote to add them.

They might be willing to vote for Cincinnati, though.

Amen to that. I really hope the whole ACC network thing comes true. The ACC shouldn't add teams unless it really needs to, and nobody left in the Big East really moves the needle for me.

Agreed, and if the Irish do decide to join full time, the ACC would most likely add one more and stop at 16.

If the ACC adds more than one of those schools, it would be to replace schools that left. Adding them now would dilute the product so much, it would push out anyone who had another option.

I agree. What would having 20 teams do to the per school payout from the tv revenue?

The only conference at all likely to go to 20 teams is the Big Ten. The SEC could probably put together a solid 20 but supposedly doesn't want to.

Ditto. 20 teams means nothing when most of them are laughable as fball programs.

Re: Prediction - The ACC Will Be The First Conference To 20

The move to 18 or 20 for the ACC would only happen if it allowed a clean break between the ACC and Big East teams, which would actually make everyone happier.

ACC South: Miami, FSU, Clemson, NCSU, GTech, Wake, Duke, UNC, UVA, VTech

ACC North: Pitt, Cuse, Cincy, UL, Temple, UConn, BC, ND, (MD),(RU)

To get to 20, there just don't seem to be enough quality schools left that are going to be seriously considered.

Unless some magical deal happens where the ACC gets a huge payday and Maryland and Rutgers decide to come back east, I don't see how we get to 20.

As noted on several other threads it is much more likely the B1G and SEC will take 2-6 more teams each from the ACC and B12, with the PAC maybe doing the same.

The fourth conference will most likely be whatever is left of the ACC, Big East, and B12.

RE: Prediction - The ACC Will Be The First Conference To 20 Team

If the ACC were to expand now, that would be the green light for schools to leave. Schools could leave for the B1G or SEC and the ACC would still 'survive'. ACC knows this and are still trying to get members to sign a GoR, which no one but WF wants to sign. ACC is not in any position right now to add poor/bad members.

I see a school leaving before I see the ACC adding another team (unless ND as full member).

ACC will not expand to 20 teams. There just aren't enough good programs available that make sense. I don't even see expansion to 18.

Cardfan,

This is a totally unrelated question, but has there been any mention of moving your annual game with Kentucky to the last week of the season. The ACC already has three yearly matchups with SEC schools played on that weekend (SCar/Clem, GT/UGa, Florida/FSU). It would be interesting to have your game that weekend also...

I would think Tennessee would have something to say about that!

Tennessee could play Vandy that weekend like they always did every year until somewhat recently. This UT/UK game on the last regular season weekend of the year is a relatively recent tradition. UT used to play Vandy and they would play UK the week before. Obviously, it's up to all parties and I don't know that UK would be interested, but UT certainly didn't object to it before 2002 or so. With Vandy being aruably a better program than UK right now, it probably would be a better "rivalry weekend" game anyhow.

RE: Prediction - The ACC Will Be The First Conference To 20 Team

My perfect ACC that would keep most rivalries: 10 Conference Games a year with 1 rotating from other division : Football Championship Game in Charlotte (with BOA stadium improvements /dome)

ACC North
1. Boston College
2. UConn
3. Syracuse
4. Rutgers
5. Pitt
6. Cincy
7. Notre Dame
8. Louiville
9. West Virginia
10. Maryland

ACC South
1. Miami
2. FSU
3. GT
4. Clemson
5. Wake
6. Duke
7. UNC
8. NC State
9. UVA
10. VT

Only 2 regular season out of conference games due to 10 conference games: UNC plays SCAR every year and one random game for example. This conference would be legit with power in the North and South. All of tobacco road is back together again. This conference would be a player in all sports. I think we could get NBC sports on board with this plan to get the ACC some more money and they could do the ACC game of the week at 3:30 like CBS does for the SEC. Also NBC sports could cover ACC Sunday night basketball. Let ESPN run the new ACC Network instead of Raycom. This plan would cover all population from Miami to Boston and west to Chicago.
